We went early Saturday afternoon around 2:30 for a meal. The restaurant was empty with just a few other patrons dining. The staff was very attentive and answered all our questions with great patience. After we placed our order it arrived at our table in just a few minutes. Everyone raved about the large portions and the exceptional quality of our food. Although it was around $70 for the 3 of us i think it was worth it. This place is a classic. It's been around since forever and possibly the gold standard for a Montreal style smoked meat sando. My wait person was Candy and she was amazing. She shared with me what was fresh and made sure that it was on my plate. You cannot go there without having a black cherry with the combo or anything smoked meat. It's a must. I had tried other deli's proclaiming Montreal style smoked meat, but they all were so salty that not only did your blood pressure go through the roof, but you ended up with a giant headache. Woah woah woah This place is awesome. It has old school diner vibes. From the decor to the servers to the food. I can't believe I've never been here but I will certainly frequent this place as often as I can. I ordered 1. Matzo ball soup 2. Old fashioned smoked meat sandwich The soup was amazing, the matzo balls had a soft texture on the outside and a more firm texture in the middle satisfying all preferences. The old fashioned was great as well but I would have liked it to come a little hotter not cold as the waitress did not ask for my preference or choice. But Food came fast and service was just as speedy. The decor was old but it matched the desired effect of a deli. An aging deli that still delivers some of the best food around. Centre Street Deli is an older institution of food, being in the Thornhill area for over 35 years. It's been around that long because the food and the prices are that good. I've stopped by here multiple times and always get the Old Fashioned Center Street Special on rye, medium (not lean) with extra meat. I've never been disappointed with this deli, the food is always delicious and tasty, the cuts of meat are fantastic, thick and juicy, and the fries are golden and crisp. It's a good deal for a good portion of food. The service is always friendly, with servers who are attentive, chatty and friendly. My only comment would be that because this Deli has been around for so long (as have I), I remember when I was little and the paint was fresh. But now it's been worn down and it's noticeable from the doorways to the chairs and tables. This staple of Thornhill is still delivering great food, but the restaurant itself needs some love and upkeep. A fresh coat of paint will go a long way. Even the washrooms (while very clean) have a smell to them. I believe it's time to give Centre Street Deli some love and freshen it up a bit for the younger generation. read more

Centre Street Deli has been around in Thornhill since 1988. I came here back then, when they first opened, and loved their smoked meat. They were in a smaller unit back then. Although it's been 37 years, I never forgot how good their food was so when I happened to be in the area, I had to drop in. My friend and I had their Old Fashioned Smoked Meat sandwich, with Fries, Coleslaw, and Pickle. It was really good, moist and tender, without being salty. The generous serving of fries was crispy. The coleslaw and pickle were just right. Good meal! We also had a Cheese Bagelach. We weren't sure exactly what we had ordered but were willing to try it. As the name suggests, it kinda looks like a bagel but isn't. It was soft, more on the sweet side, almost dessert-like, especially with the included creamy sauce. It was good. Came here on a weekend before noon and we didn't have to wait for a table. By around 1pm there was quite a line up. We ordered the smoked meat (old fashioned) platter which came with coleslaw, a pickle, fries and rye bread ($27.50). We were asked whether we wanted lean or medium for the smoked meat and we went with medium. We also ordered a fresh orange juice for our kid ($3.25). They have ketchup and yellow mustard on the table, but you can request other mustards. They have a variety to choose from. We asked for the spicy brown and the hot mustard (comes in a little jar). I noticed a lot of other tables had the hot mustard so figured that was a popular choice. The smoked meat was very good. Melt in your mouth. I used the hot mustard in my sandwich but I think I might prefer the regular yellow mustard. The coleslaw was average, and the fries portion was much smaller than expected. No greasiness in aftertaste. Seasoning is also - not too salty, nothing is lacking. The rye bread tasted fresh as well. Also liked Vernikas. The dough was super soft and bouncy, it melts in the mouth with the creamy mashed potato inside & the caramelized onion topping! Simple looks, but well conceived food. So delicious. Beef Knish was super savory. Moistness (inside), crispiness (outer layer), starchiness/chewiness (from the inner starchy mashed potato layer), and chunkiness (from meat filling in the center) - all packed in this pocket. Enjoyable, delicious and filling! Pleasure to try Kasha Knish. Buckwheat filling was nutty and a bit chewy, the flavor is not as intense as other food items in the restaurant, but it has a natural texture and flavor. The more I chew, the more flavor it releases. This might be the first Jewish deli I've been to which serves pork. The cheery cartoons & murals on the wall give the place character & service here is good. Bowl of chicken soup with kreplach (dumplings) had really tasty soup; the Jews have a deserved reputation for chicken soup! The kreplach were good too. The skin was a bit thick but that may be as it's supposed to be. Smoked meat platter (half & half) was served with not one, not two but 6 types of mustard (if you count French's classic yellow on the table). While sweet & hot was the best, there was also honey, dijon, spicy brown & hot. The fries tasted home made. The smoked meat was good: moist & flavourful. Mild had more luscious marbling but old fashioned was tastier. There was quite a lot of meat. The coleslaw was crisp with a good balance of tartness. Karnatzel (sausage) was decent. read more

Centre Street Deli has been a neighbourhood staple since 1988. They are known for being one of the top smoked meat sandwich shops in the GTA. Over the years, the ownership has been passed down to three employees (one of them being Jewish from what I've learned from our server) . They also moved to a more prominent location down the street with lots of tables so perfect for a family to dine-in. I don't usually crave a deli sandwich, but I'm a fan after tasting their Old-Fashioned pastrami sandwich! It's a must-try on their menu. I love the old-school theme of this diner. The service was also really attentive. The prices are very reasonable, given the generous portion sizes. You can choose leaner, medium or fattier cuts, and I highly suggest fattier for the full flavour. I also tried their hot brisket, which comes with gravy and toast, coleslaw and fries on the side. Delicious as well. I brought my Asian in-laws and usually they prefer dim sum or some type of Asian cuisine when we bring them out to eat and they even gave their stamp of approval! We came here around 11am on a weekend and by noon, this spot gets packed with people lining up for a spot for brunch. As New Yorkers visiting Toronto, my boyfriend and I were excited to try this deli for the Canadian smoked meat and chopped liver. We also ordered the beef knish which was delicious and quite large. All the food was delicious but what we loved the most was the "sweet hot mister mustard" that tasted like a a mix of honey, spicy and brown mustard that they get from Ohio. I've always wanted to try out this place after seeing a lot of good reviews, and finally had a chance to try recently. I got the smoked meat sandwich and the classical turkey bacon club. It comes with potato salad and coleslaws with decent portion. Each dish is around $15+tax. The smoked meat tasted so yummy, comparable with the good ones in Montreal. The club sandwich is provided with very thick stuffings (about 3cm thick) that's quite filling. Overall, the value for money is great and food quality is decent. read more

Second time I ordered a medium Montreal smoked meat sandwich on rye for takeout and was not able to eat most of it. Because the other time had lots of hunks of fat, this time when I ordered it, I specifically said medium is fine as long as there are no chunks of fat. this time there was more than that problem. Most of the meat that was sliced was a dark colour and very hard to chew. I was able to find a few light pink slices, which I ate by hand. With tax this was almost $20 that I could not eat. From now on, I will order takeout deli meat elsewhere. Otherwise, I will eat it in the restaurant where I still have a chance to complain. You will have a very happy day. Don't forget to get the extra hot Keen's mustard. It goes well with the beef. Also comes with coleslaw, which helps to neutralize some of the cholesterol guilt. If you go for lunch on a weekend, get there early or expect a long wait in line for a table. They close early in the evening - 7:30 pm I believe. I find this odd for a restaurant. The deli mild meat is cut thick; it's mouth-wateringly good as are the fries. They pack a lot of meat between the slices of rye bread. You can ask for the meat lean or regular. The chef's salad is a bowl of iceberg lettuce with 2 slices of tomato, 2 slices of cucumber and one olive - not strongly recommended. It's too bad they don't cut the tomato and cucumber into smaller pieces and mix them in with the lettuce. The service is uneven depending on which server you get. Some are nicer than others. The last time I went there, I had a bad experience while paying at the cash register (the servers don't take payments). I was asking the cashier if I could tap my card and she mumbled what sounded like "tap" but she actually said "tip". In hindsight, I suppose she wanted to know if I was leaving a tip on my card. I had left the tip on the table. I repeated "tap?". The cashier set up the credit card machine to accept a tip. She was annoyed that she had to reset the machine for no tip on my credit card. When I pointed out the humour in tap vs tip she saw no humour and scowled. The decor is nothing special. At this deli, it's all about the food! They have a selection of scrumptious foods to take home including desserts. There's lots of free parking as you'd expect in Thornhill. read more

Wow has Centre Street Deli fallen from the top of the CN Tower. This is the second time that I ordered cold sliced corn beef by the pound. The meat was I would be generous to stay 20% beef and 80% fat. What has happened to them. They were considered to have the best corn beef in the GTA but now the worst I have had, and I am being generous. The restaurant only had 2 customers at around 11 a.m. on a Saturday. In the past the place was packed. Now I know why. It seems this is the end of Centre Street Deli. So sad. The original owners are turning over in their graves. Do the public a favour, pack it in. I love this place. It takes me back to the days of having dinners out with my family including my grandparents. It may be known for their awesome deli meat sandwiches. But today I was here for two things, the first being the relaxing ambience : the quiet family lunches and all the sweet elderly faces and the novelty of Yiddish words like kreplach falling from peoples lips. [Side note: pastrami is a Yiddish word, too!]. The second (and actually primary) thing I came for was a bowl of homemade chicken soup. I decided to go for the addition of kreplach to the soup and I'm glad I did. Kreplach are essentially chicken dumplings. The four large dumplings were very tender and filling. So glad I stopped by. Ridiculous rules. The customer comes second!!! My wife and I were having lunch in the restaurant. We asked the server to add a grilled cheese to our order for take out for our daughter. The server could not do that. Instead, I had to leave my table and stand in a takeout line to place my order so that it would be ready when we finished our lunch. I like this place. We went on a Sunday morning at 11. There's a big parking area, lots of free parking. This place doesn't look that big from the outside but when you get in, its huge! And really busy. So come early. I got the club roll. Which is also Cheryl's favourite. Not sure who Cheryl is but based on her favourite sandwich I like her!! So the club roll is described as assorted meat grilled on a hamburger bun. It comes with fries and Cole slaw. When I ordered it the server said its all the meat. Yum! All the meat. All the meat. So it came. The meat was grilled on the flat top, which made it great tasting. The bun was soft and fresh, seemed like it might have been made that morning. It tasted great. I completely understand why this is Cheryl's favourite! The fries were great. Just the way I like them. Cooked and slightly soft. Cole slaw tasted fresh and like spring. Friend took me here. I'm from Houston. I guess I was expecting a little bit more, but it was good none the less. Our waitress was wonderful. Prompt, attentive, very lovely. The service was fast! I ordered a corned beef sandwich with fries. You order separate. No complaints on the pricing what so ever. The sandwich was super good, however I've had bigger in New York and believe it or not Houston. The fries were yummy as well. Usually I take home half my sandwich back home but I devoured all of this one. Meaning it wasn't as much meat as I am accustomed to.
