They start off with a class to teach basic techniques. It gave everyone a welcome feel to learn the steps and practice dancing with others. Then they open the floor for everyone to come in and dance. You are more relaxed at that point because you have learned the steps and already danced with most of the people there. It was great to meet several girls that I probably wouldn't have even talked to without the class. I love bachata so it was great to get in the moment again. The price was great for the class and a fun open dance floor afterwards. I enjoyed my time and will definitely be back next week.

There's a terrible dearth of dance clubs in suburban Boston and Marquee is trying to fill the gap. Fridays are Latin nights and Saturdays are what they call "Old School R&B, Hip Hop & Reggae". I'll describe Saturdays below as I've not been to any Latin nights. The club consists of three areas. First, there's a lower room where older (70s/80s/90s) dance music is played. The DJ is good and the room is nicely laid out with some cushy seating, stand-up tables, and a rather long bar. There's plenty of room for dancing. The crowd trends towards older (which includes me!). It wasn't a large crowd tonight; I'm not sure if this is normal or not. Second, there's the main club, which is much larger and much more crowded. There, we have an excellent DJ mixing newer music, e.g. 2000s and on with a few older songs. It's louder and he produces a nice steady R&B dance groove most of the night, omitting the slow dreary hip-hop that has emerged the past decade or so. There are two bars and the place is well-decorated and looks fairly modern. Clearly, a lot of thought was put into how to transform it from whatever it used to look like. The crowd consists of a nice mix of ethnic groups (black, white, & Hispanic), with everyone feeling comfortable and enjoying themselves. The third is what they refer to as the Lounge, which is the section you pass through before you go to either of the clubs I described above. It has a bar, some dancing, and places to sit. It's a good place to go if either of the main rooms are too crowded. They serve some food (pizza, wings, warm doughnuts) there also before the other rooms open at 9:00. The crowd was well-behaved with no one overdoing the drinking and the Creepy Guy count was quite low so women should be happy. There's plenty of parking and there's also a police presence but they had nothing to do and just strolled around. The staff is very nice--a number of them used to work at the old Vincent's down the street. Overall, Marquee is an excellent place for people to dance & socialize without having to go into the city. It may need a little polishing here and there but that will probably be taken care of later. I think it's time for people to get out from behind their computers & tablets and try to actually meet and mingle a bit. Marquee would be a good place to start.

The only disappointment for me has been that for the last couple months significantly more men have participated than women, which has resulted in me not always having a dance partner. Ladies will have no difficulty getting a dance partner. Good food and drinks are available at the bar, but you'll want to eat before the lesson starts so that you don't have to stop dancing. Most nights the dancing ends at 23:00, but sometimes it keeps going until midnight. If you stay until the end, you may get invited to an afterparty for more dancing. If you dance Miami style salsa on 1, it's really not difficult to transition to NY style salsa on 2, and during the social dance, there's a good likelihood that you will be able to find someone who can dance both styles.
