He came to my house for the scheduled consultation and gave me the best price. After seeing my lawn, I asked if he could fix my sprinkler and lay out landscape fabric and mulch to prevent weeds and maintenance. He said he would measure what I need once he finishes the lawn cleanup, which I liked. The day came, and he cut my grass and cleaned up the weeds in my lawn. He also capped a broken irrigation line I had from the previous owner of the house without any issues and installed the new sprinkler I had mentioned. He measured my lawn and gave me the price for the mulch with a landscape barrier. I agreed, and he went to Home Depot to pick up the materials in his truck. When he came back, he laid down the barrier and mulch to perfection. He also went the extra mile by removing the sprinkler heads that aren't needed anymore, which I appreciate about him. All in all, Tony is the man for the job. He's easy to communicate with, and he works hard. He came over the very next day to look at the lawn and understand the scope of the project. We had our lawn rebate application approved by WaterSmart and had very specific requirements to qualify for the rebate. He took good notes and came back with a competitive quote that met all the requirements for the program. He laid out timelines, scope, requirements very clearly and delivered exactly how he said he would. When he needed input from us he would ask us (like which stone color we preferred, which mulch color etc). They handled the entire project from start to finish -- removing all the old turf, hauling away debris, and grading the soil to prepare the area for planting. They installed a drought-tolerant landscape that included new irrigation, mulch, and a variety of California-friendly plants, plus one ornamental tree to meet rebate requirements. The crew also helped with final cleanup and made sure everything was ready for the SoCal WaterSmart rebate inspection. If we have future projects, he would be my first call. The issue is not with the actual work, but rather the business model and lack of communication. We have since moved on to another gardening service. Luis wants guaranteed business by charging a monthly fee to show up 2x/month year round. However, for simple lawn/hedge trimming and leaf clean-up, the amount he charges does not make sense. We struck a deal with him for ad hoc service, because nothing grows in the dry months of summer. However, we had a "no-call, no-show" during the rainy season when he had told us multiple weeks in a row that he would come by. When he finally showed up weeks later, he decided to charge us TWICE for overgrowth. Had he shown up the first time he said he would, that would not have happened. It seems he decided our business was no longer worth his time, so he decided to extract the most cash he could from us before we moved on. Needless to say, I cannot recommend Lona's to anyone after this experience.
