Maureen is also a very kind lady and i would recommend her to anyone with similar problems.

I had the mishap to fall and did some damage to my ribs. The pain was so severe that my doctor…read morewanted to put me on morphine. The A&E department at hospital was like a conveyor belt: I arrived, was examined and discharged. One morning the pain was so acute that I nearly dialled 999 for an emergency ambulance. However, thinking of my previous experience I telephoned a physiotherapist called Maureen Bennett whom I have known for many years. Maureen was once the British judo champion and when she retired from competition she became the physiotherapist to the British Olympic athletic team and then moved into private practise. If any one should know about falls it is Maureen. She examined me and diagnosed that I had fractured a rib and torn muscle and probably ligament. She applied strapping to me so that my ribs were held firm and for the first time in over a week I was able to sit down and stand up without nearly passing out with the pain. A good friend of mine has been suffering for months with what the doctors diagnosed as the early stages of arthritis. Maureen diagnosed that he had a vertebrae out of kilter and started treating him. The result is that his quality of life is starting to improve. There is magic in her hands.

I'm currently attending here under the care of Janice Thompson for Acupuncture…read more I'm lucky enough to have health cover through work and Janice was listed on their recommended Therapists and with the Therapy Centre being very accessible to my house that was all the better. The Therapy centre is very clean and well maintained and all the staff i have had experience with have been friendly & professional. My initial consultation took about 40 mins and Janice assured me all the information given was relevant to ensure the correct points were stimulated in the actual treatment. I'm usually a bit of a wuss when it comes to needles but out of 6 sessions I have only felt about 5/6 of the needles being inserted (on average I have 15/20 needles inserted) as they are that fine & Janice is very good at her job in making me feel relaxed and at ease with the process. A brief consultation is done each session for her to give you the best session possible with adaptive treatment to ensure you leave feeling calm and refreshed. I would definitely recommend acupuncture as a worthwhile investment in your well being. They have a large portfolio of Therapists and treatment available so I'm sure whatever service you are looking for they can help.

I became rather despondent when my shoulder began to hurt earlier this year. I do a lot of yoga and with this constant dull ache I simply couldn't attend the classes I had been, or do my own practice. I wanted to see an osteopath because of their holistic approach to the body; they manipulate bones as well as doing muscle work. Her approach is very holistic as she asked me more about my medical history and general state of health more than an GP has before. As we went through this I talked about my yoga practice and it turns out that Sarah is a yoga teacher! I could not have asked for anything more as she understands what I am doing with my body and why it might hurt as a result. As my bones get clicked and muscles massaged my diet is always asked about, making sure I get enough vitamin B and Iron. The receptionist is a yoga teacher as well and is always willing to have a good chat about anything from yoga to The Archers. The osteopath is in most days and a homeopath or acupuncturist can be seen by appointment.

As well and manipulating my back to fix the immediate problem, Sarah was great with advice on how to help - exercises, posture, seat advice, etc. For anyone who is a member of Leeds Hospital Fund, Sarah is registered with all the professional bodies that they recognise so your fees can be claimed back through LHF.

Firstly, as a retail outlet (I can't believe I'm saying that) St James', and particularly Gledhow wing, is well over priced. On entering I am reminded of an airport departure lounge and, in common with these, the retailers are aware that they are serving a captive audience and quite obviously have no problem in profiting from peoples misfortune. I'm sure that these shiny new retail units are making lots of money for someone and it's good to know that, somewhere, there are happy people. More worrying was the comment of the assistant in one of these retail units when I commented on the excessive profits. I won't repeat his words but his comment on who profits was clearly racist. As a hospital (yes they still have room for that sort of stuff) I was left feeling saddened and extremely worried. I ha ve been visiting St James' daily for the past three weeks and these are my overall impressions: I have the up-most respect for most of the individuals who provide nursing and support care but, as a qualified nurse, I worried that many staff seem under trained for the role they find themselves in and they are obviously very stressed. It is unacceptable to 'forget' a patients medication, neglect hygiene needs or protect patients from harm. Staffing levels are low and patient care suffers because of this. Recently I spent a night on the assessment ward where there were several patients in the corridor due to lack of space some of whom had been waiting 12 hours for a bed (and some of these patients were planned admissions, asked to come in because a bed was ready for them). Don't even get me started on the cost of parking........
