As we descended the stairs we fell into an alternate universe where people were singing Ace of Base at the top of their lungs and dancing like "All That She Wants" was going to save us all. As if that wasn't awesome enough, the DJ followed it up with "The Sign" and the crowd roared. Talk about knowing your target audience! The bar was several people deep so ordering cocktails seemed pretty out of the question (not to mention rude) so the four of us drank Japanese beer instead. Too loud to converse with one another we had an amazing time watching everything going on around us: the super tall bloke with a popped collar polo shirt who had at least one arm in the air the entire time who knew the words to every song played, the folks attempting swing dancing in too small an area, the gigantic wall-size mirrors that made the place feel so much bigger than it was and several times confused us into thinking that the place had multiple rooms. The crowd consisted of folks ages twenty to fifty and had a large portion of young women who had, clearly, put in loads of effort for their big night out. More surprising to me, the older dudes in the striped shirts who appeared to have come into central London from a fairly far off exurb seemed just as at home here as the early twenties ladies in mini dresses and carefully applied makeup and super done hair. And me in my climate-appropriate outfit? I sensed the possibility of this place. I'll be back to sample the cocktails some weeknight soon.

When we went, the menu was themed by the Heroes & Villains personas of iconic English figures like Paul McCartney, Richard Branson, etc. Featuring art on each page of the menu, of course. Every cocktail was great and very unique. One I got came with a cracker filled with goat cheese as a garnish. They are way more intricate than what you'd expect from the menu. Definitely would recommend to lovers of cocktail bars and unique experiences!

The menu is kind of a challenge to read, partly because it is so dark and partly because it is full of stuff I'd never heard of - there is a even a glossary although we were all still a bit bewildered! Staff were very sweet, although our poor server was new and was struggling to answer our questions. Drinks are very expensive, cocktails listed on the menu start at about £9.50. The vodka martini was kind of awesome - sort of like drinking delicious petrol. I tried a gun barrel gin with lemon seltzer - the gin came in a separate glass so you could try it - mine had a smoked almonds and cherry flavour which gave it a nice hint of sweetness. I dumped my gin in the seltzer after a few sips which I then regretted because I couldn't taste it any more. The seltzer itself was absolutely delicious - one of the most delightful refreshing soft drinks I've had in a long time. So I would suggest you enjoy them separately! There didn't seem to be much in the way of food - a colleague ordered a cheeseboard which didn't look particularly impressive for £12 although I liked the cute old plates that came with it. The waitress took the time to explain the menu which is laid out to guide you towards their specialty drinks based on fruits, spices, herbs, etc. There is also a classic menu for general spirits and beers. We went with two types of Old Fashioned - one with the house bourbon and the other with a special peanut butter and jam whiskey. Drinks were average for London. At some point in the night the door staff started work and made me uncomfortable by staring at me every time i moved around the venue. At times they followed me (I'm in my 50s so not a threat). By 8pm there were 4 members of staff and although I was 1 of 2 people waiting for a drink, only 1 of them was serving. 3 of them were having a lovely chat in the front bar. I made a comment to my mate and the barmaid went and told them. I then had a different barman from earlier walkover and rudely dropped the card reader in front of me on the bar to pay before serving me my drink. Didn't say please or thank you. Rude as hell. At the end of the evening I witnessed a guy with a disability having a disagreement with the door staff who showed no empathy to his well-being. The promoter in the rear was really friendly all night and the bands were all chatty. What started off as an exciting evening soon made me keen to leave. It wasn't busy with locals so maybe this is a reflection as to why. When I left after the venue, an older door supervisor was on the front entrance and was really friendly, exactly how I believe all staff should be. I'm mixed as to going back as it might have been a coincidence that the evening bar staff and inside door staff all being rude, but I won't make a point of returning over going somewhere different.

Sure it's no pretty picture but it has character, the pub has a large open standing area with bar in the middle. I wouldn't say there's much seating but I don't think I'd come here to sit inside anyway. What's great is that they have a lovely, large rooftop area with plenty of seating available on large benches. There's also a BBQ serving up traditional jerk chicken and other street food type foods. We were offered a £1 off voucher for our jerk but sadly on this occasion we weren't eating here. I'd definitely come back to try it though!
