One of the great things about fall in Vermont is visiting the vast array of orchards that dot the countryside. Getting one's fill of apple and cider donuts is one of the season's highpoints. Locally, just 5 minutes outside of the 5 Corners of Essex Junction is Chapin's Apple Orchard. Visitors to The Chapin Orchards will be amazed at the variety of apples that are grown there as well as the farm pressed cider, pumpkins, gourds and other seasonal Vermont that are available. If you're making a day of it, Chapin's offers picnic benches to enjoy the fresh air, a cup of their hot coffee and donut or if you pack a lunch in, you've got a place to set up on. So whether it's a gathering a bag of fresh apples, picking up some native maple syrup or just enjoying an afternoon outside, Chapin's Orchard is the place to go. Chapin's Orchard is located at 150 Chapin Road. When you get to the intersection of VT 15 and 128 in Essex Center just before the Essex Free Library, bear left and follow the signs. You'll be glad you did!

Great apple orchard. Limited picking when we went. A little behind the best time. Would definitely recommend.

After picking, we stopped by the barn and bought some Honey Crisp apples to take home, they were just as amazing.

Perfect stop for UPick berries. Loved that they still had blueberries late in the season (late Aug…read more/ early Sep) as most farms said they were done as of early August. The fresh raspberries were so tasty and fun to pick. The blackberries were minimal on my visit but those that I found were good and flavorful. Not sure of organic, but all berries were pesticide free and oh so tasty. They have roaming chickens in the fields and they were pretty friendly/annoying you as you pick :) Farmer Mike was super friendly and welcoming to his farm. Note that they have Isham Farms on both sides of the road. The berries are up the driveway by the Sugar Shack were they make maple syrup in March/April of each year.

The bride and groom were allowed to bring in all of their own food and beverages, which made for a low-key, easy event. The wedding day included wagon rides through the fields - and another full, fun evening. I can't speak to whether the food and service are recommended/provided through the farm but it was a wonderful, tasty, family-style meal; and, the bartenders and other servers were friendly and fast. Farmer Mike himself is a also very friendly and clearly proud of his beautiful property. Oh, and his berries, honey, and syrup are all some of the best I've had. Overall, I would highly recommend Isham for DIY berry picking with the family or the entire property for an event.

A friend and I shared a Large share at ICF (which is separate from the Intervale Food Hub by the…read moreway) this past summer. Their COVID protocols were excellent (handwash and hand sanitizer stations, assigned staggered pick up times, everyone required to socially distance and wear masks, etc). The all-organic produce was awesome! There was definitely plenty of it (I often shared some with my roommates) and a good variety over the season. I loved getting watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, beans, carrots, onions, potatoes, beets, kale, chard, cabbage, consistent salad greens over the whole season, strawberries and corn in season, pumpkins, herbs, scallions, etc. I also enjoyed the pick your own component (for herbs, scallions, string beans, strawberries, cherry tomatoes, cut flowers, etc). It was so lovely to get to put my hands on the plants and in the dirt and directly see things growing. Normally there's such a divide between "front-" and "back-of-house". I loved that this divide was broken down somewhat. I was also frankly amazed at the quantity of food they produced--how many people were being fed from this one farm. I availed myself of the organic VT eggs each week, which were great. It was so convenient to get so much of my food from the farm pick up, especially during COVID. I went to the store so much less, and I felt good about more of my money going to farmers. We wanted to do their Winter Share but couldn't b/c they only have 1/3 as many shares as the summer so instead we're splitting an Intervale Food Hub share, which is nice and has variety in a different way (for example it has apples and mushrooms, and you can add tortillas). One difference I appreciate about ICF is that the eggs and all of the produce there are organic, whereas the food hub doesn't have quite as much organic selection.

It's been fun to try cooking different things and to support our local farmers! I appreciate that it's a mix of fruits, veggies, and herbs. Even the cats get excited for weekly deliveries :)
