Today I stopped by this cute little deli after visiting a client because I kept hearing how good their fried chicken was -- and let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint! The chicken was crispy and delicious, and the seafood salad tasted just like it was homemade. The cashier was very friendly, though some of the other staff weren't as welcoming. Chaptico Market and Deli has been around since the mid '60s and are famously known for their fried chicken, stuffed ham, and country sausage. We came here to check out their fried chicken, and there was already a line! We ordered a 2-piece, dark, which came with 2 sides - we opted for the Jojo's and coleslaw. The fried chicken was okay - it had a thicker skin/batter, and seemed to be a dense-er dredge that almost tasted flour-like. The coleslaw was pretty tasty, but the Jojo's, which were Chaptico's version of potato wedges, were more on the sweeter end with a thick layer of seasoning. Staff were friendly and efficient; definitely could have made a difference if the chicken was right out of the fryer; ours may have been sitting for a bit. I only pass by this little market a few times a year, but based upon so many excellent reviews I really wanted to stop and enjoy their fried chicken. It was lunchtime so there was a nice vibe of customers coming and going. I ordered a medium-sized bucket of chicken - that's really all I wanted! I was glad to see that they had an ample amount of chicken already made. So how was the chicken? I have to agree with so many others - the chicken was really wonderful! For me it was really good chicken on so many levels - it was hot and freshly fried, it was moist with a great crispy coating, and the salt level was really to my liking - enough salt but not overwhelming in any way! With the bucket I received two of each cut of the chicken - wings, drumstick, thigh, and breast. After I finished my chicken I decided that a little bit of dessert would be nice. So I went back inside and I quickly settled on ice cream. Some mint chocolate chip hit the spot and I was one happy camper on the rest of my drive home! First time visiting Chaptico Market & Deli on March 30th. This establishment came highly recommended for the chicken and JoJos. Our overall experience was a 1.5/5. With the exception of the young lady at the register, the customer service was sub-par. As we approached the food counter, we told the young lady waiting on us this was our first time and the response was "Are you ready?" No...do you have any questions, do you need to see a menu...nothing. (Maybe I am asking for too much!) Before we even ordered, we noticed that the JoJos (potato wedges) were running low - probably about 15 left in the warming pan. Another employee came out with a fresh pan, placed the fresh pan in the display case and put the "old" JoJos on top. And what do you know, the young lady waiting on us selected all the old JoJos for our orders. Go figure! Could I have asked for fresh JoJos? Yes, I could have, but again lack of proper customer service skills. We really wanted to like this place and recommend it to others. The chicken was okay (I have friends and family who fry chicken better) and the JoJos, I'll pass. Typically, I like to experience an establishment more than once, but the customer service, um lack thereof, killed it for me. Try it for yourself, don't just take my word for it. This is like a "Diner, Drive In and Dives" hidden secret. My 3 piece meal came with two sides--greens and cabbage. They were good. Both of these sides were "I would order this again" good! Twice now I've gone in to pick up my order, which contained both pizza and chicken, and the pizza was ready, but the chicken was not. It's seems that the chicken priority goes to the customers who are walking up to place their order. So my other food is getting cold while I'm waiting for them to fry chicken... I said something to the teenager that was helping me, but apparently he's "not a fryer," so there's nothing he can do about it. Go team! And it's usually a cluster in there. You stand there with several other people, waiting for someone to acknowledge you. In the mean time, another customer will walk past the line of people and go closer to the door at the end and get helped before all of the people standing there waiting their turn. 3 stars because the food is good. Today is my birthday, fried chicken is my favorite and each year my wife either cooks or goes out for it. The past few years the chicken came from Popeyes and WalMart which was a disappointment. I'm very biased as I was raised less than 5 minutes from here and know most it's people, but this place even with it's busiest days (very loud) is so welcoming and comforting compared to other places I've been. It's food has always been great (though the wedges recipe changed and is spicier now alongside the changed bread pudding recipe which is spongier than before) and it's selection of said food plus drink, snack, and general goods is notable. Very biased lol. My favorite foods from there are the breakfast sandwiches and the porkchops with the pulled pork and au gratin/cheesy potatoes at second place. The ice cream part is newer but great! They have the BEST fried chicken I've ever had. We get it almost every time we visit our family. There is normally always a line on weekends in the summer and especially holidays. I recommend pre ordering so you can surpass the line and walk to the left of the counter where the desserts are and they will have your pick up order ready. We recommend the "Jo Jo's" steak fries. I haven't been able to find good fried chicken since moving here and I've been told this is the place to go for fried chicken. The outside was a little unassuming, but once inside I knew this was the place. I go to the back where the kitchen counter is, and order a 10 piece. I asked if they had spicy as that's what I am really after, and was told they do it every other day, but unfortunately this was the day they don't do it. It was nice to see that most of the chicken is nice size, but the wing was disappointingly small, like really small. Once I got to the car I had to try a piece. The skin was perfectly crunchy, and the meat was moist and tender. My only complaint for this is that it is very salty. Although overall I enjoyed it, I couldn't get over the saltiness. I hope it's not always this way. I do want to try some of their sides and pizza next time. On the outside there's an ice cream place tht sells soft serve and house made ice cream. The soft serve comes out of a machine. The other ice cream is served as big scoops. Even a small is quite large. Was disappointed two flavors I picked out were discontinued due to lack of popularity, but my third choice of creamsickle was delish. Definitely recommend coming here for this. For several years my friends have been ranting abut the fried chicken at this place so I finally decided to stop in to give it a try. As you enter the establishment you definitely get the feel of a local store. I was lucky to see that they were just dumping a new tray of chicken on the line and quickly ordered 10 pieces to go. Got some of those jojos too. Got home and was super excited that my fried chicken craving was going to be satisfied. Good stuff.. and the jojos were good too. I had eaten 8 pieces of chicken in one sitting. The next time I stopped at this location I got another 10 piece. This time they weren't freshly cooked and I didn't make it thru the entire 10 pc. Very salty and the next day the remaining pieces were really dry. I noticed that in this store there were many odds and ends of grocery items as if you lived near by it would be convenient. The prices are a bit high. Ive since found another location closer to home that has the exact same chicken so I don't really have a reason to stop in this place when Im driving thru Chaptico. This place is so inconspicuous and such a fun little hole in the wall. "Fun" might not be the right word but we will just say that for now.
