My husband grew up coming to Nick's. We recently joined his sister there. Nostalgic with the butcher counter especially. Got some great breakfast sausage and a few sausage links. They were wonderful. I was disappointed in Nicks today, last week I picked up a ham steak the use by date on the package said March 8, 2023. Last night I was going to fix it for dinner when I opened it the ham has a very thick slimy and gooey. It had a nicked sticker on it so I thought they would take it back without a receipt, it was under $7. So I went in and spoke with the manager told him about it first thing he asked for is a receipt, no I don't but it has your pricing sticker you can see I purchased it here. He wouldn't even look at it just wanted a receipt, said he could look it up if I used a charge card. I shop here a few times a week, I hardly ever purchase meat ahead of time to use later except for bacon I get 5lbs at a time and meat like the packaged ham steaks or whole yams that have a longer use by date for planned ahead meals , I stop in pickup what ever meat I'm fixing for dinner that night. This is the second time since this store has opened up that a meat I purchased from here had an issue with it and this was the first time I was asked for a receipt. I've been shopping at a Nicks since I was a kid my grandmother use to take me to the one in Clinton once a week, then when I started working I would stop in Nicks of Clinton to get a sub for lunch. It was really nice when the one opened in St-Charles off of Rt 5 and Mattawoman-Beantown Rd. I started purchasing meat for my own family and then this one opened in Calvert made it even more convenient to shop at. I guess I'll have to learn to take a picture of my receipt from here in case this happens again or I can just continue to be a loyal shopper here and just take the loss and move on. I'm not going to stop shopping here since this is only the 2nd time getting a bad product for as long as I've been a shopping at a Nick's. read more

Always amazing! The quality of food and workers passion to take care of their customers has always been top notch

To be clear, I don't ship here for groceries, this is a strict review of the deli. If you go here for lunch, prepare to wait a little, but let me tell you, it's worth it. Their lunch meat subs are like 4.99 or something crazy and are made fresh and customized. Their menu options are unique and different from the plain old one meat and cheese sub and for the price, you can't beat it. My husband always gets the steak and cheese which is a little more expensive (9.99 I think), but he loves it. They make everything to order sandwhich-wise, which is why there is a bit of a wait, but worth it for a cheap and fresh lunch. We have been meaning to try out the premade salads, as they always look great, and the cannolis are to die for. Overall, we keep coming back again and again. read more

Nicks is one of the best grocery stores I have ever shopped at. Family owned, they consistently provide great customer service, all their associates are very knowledgeable, and they only sell high quality products. Their seasonings and sausages are all private label, large variety, taste great! My favorites are the family owned sausages jalapeño and sweet pepper and onion. You can order custom cuts of any meat. Fresh ground round daily. Deli meats and cheeses on site, as well as sandwiches made to order for a quick bite to eat. Place has everything you need on your grocery list, including alcohol. There are always specials on liquor if you drink. Prices are extremely reasonable. I will drive out of my way for Nicks, the shopping experience can't be beat! read more

I've been coming to Nick's since forever, Clinton, Waldorf, and Calvert. Never had anything bad, service is great, but Fri. 7/22 went to the PF Nick's, got some extra lean ground beef and a couple of subs. The subs were horrible. No meat, bread was soggy. Disgusting. The beef looked like the medical examiner should perform an autopsy on it. And the smell. I will not be back. read more

There are lots of great items in the store. The meat counter has all cuts of meats like everyone likes or loves. The deli has lots of items to choose from and with everything being fresh. There are excellent cakes, cheesecakes, pies, etc. I'm so glad there is a Nick's recipe close by!! read more

two weeks ago I ordered a corned ham from Nicks of Calvert and requested that it NOT be deboned. when I got there this morning, they found my order and it HAD been deboned, which makes it floppy and hard to stuff, plus less flavor with the bone missing! the manager told me they didn't have any more to replace it with and offered to tie it to hold it together, which I did not want. so at this late date, I purchased the ham. my question...was I charged for the original weight of the ham before deboning? and I'm paying the price in more ways than one! this is the second issue I've had over the years with Nick's stores dealing with corned hams. don't think I'm willing to try for a third strike!! sorry Nick!! Shortly after posting this, Joe called from Nick's of Calvert and apologized. He said they have a shipment coming in early tomorrow and I could come pick up the correct half ham that I originally ordered. That was very fast service and I appreciate the courtesy. Regarding the Business Manager's comments, I'll attempt to read the response as if they aren't being condescending. The situation has been 20+ minutes waiting at the deli, one time over 30 minutes for 2lbs of lunch meat and 2lbs of cheese. I work in an industry directly impacted in many of the same ways, so I'm well aware of current circumstances. I'm glad that there was some clarification regarding where Nick's sausage is sourced from, CONTRARY to what your staff told me. Not sure what is worse here, the food or the service. I just had a pretty bad experience at Nicks. I went in to buy some chicken breasts or what they call "doubles". I asked for 3 lbs but he gave me 3.67. No big deal. I asked if they charge extra to trim the fat off them but the butcher said that they were not allowed to trim chicken breasts because due to the amount they sell, they would never have a chance to do anything else. No one else was in line in front of me or behind me. Whatever I thought, policy is policy. Also, I can never get a straight answer out of anyone when asking where the chicken comes from. I understand that for $1.69 you ARE NOT getting anything cage free, organic, hormone free, nitrate free, yadda yadda. I just wanted to know where this chicken comes from. The best answer I've gotten is that the yellow skinned chickens come from Perdue but the "doubles" come from a farm near Perdue. Here is the bad part. I went to the Deli counter to get lunchmeat. One person was in front of me with his daughter. He was number 66. They were standing in the way of the ticket machine. However, no one else was waiting and the store was empty. I committed the sin of not telling the people to move so I could get ticket number 67. Another young lady said 67. Not realizing that the man in front of me was 66, I just waited for the lady to say may I help you. Instead, in a mean condescending voice, she says "That's youuuu." I snapped back a bit and said "A half pound of Black Forest Ham". She seemed exasperated that I didn't take a ticket. She then took a ticket out the machine herself and started pacing back and forth. She then instead of completing my order, she asked another lady if they had more mayonnaise pasta in the back. After getting a yes, she left me standing there and went to the side store room. About 2 minutes later, a young man emerged from the back from behind the counter and asked if I was being helped. I told him I wasn't sure. He took my order. When the lady got back, she looked at the young man preparing my order and they snickered to each other. It's always something in this place, plus the prices are always higher than Giant or Safeway on normal everyday stuff. Never again will I set foot in this place. Not worth the struggle. read more

Nick's has great prices and selection of different spirits. They've got great selection of beers, ciders, seltzers too but the pricing is consistent, sometimes higher, than other establishments. I always like the meat I get from the meat counter. I've been disappointed with the deli lately - poor service, long wait times and poorly prepared subs. I ordered grilled onions on a sub and there were huge chunks of hardly grilled onions throughout my sandwich. No care in the preparation of my food. I find the lunch meat I get from Giant seems fresher than the lunch meat here. Cashiers are mostly friendly and nice - sometimes more focused on their conversations amongst themselves rather than the customer. Overall, I will continue shopping here for alcohol and meat but going to skip the deli counter. read more

I buy fresh meats at the butcher's counter in the back of the store, deli platters and hot food from the deli counter and I can always count on them to have hard to find wine's that aren't at other local retailers. This is the perfect place to get small groceries, fresh meats, hot/cold deli subs, wings, tenders, etc. plus your spirits. It's a well known luxury for us locals!! read more

I have visited nicks dozens of times. I have had a great experience overall. However I must leave a one star review now. Most times when I have visited on a Friday or a Saturday there has been a plain clothed officer wearing a polo shirt and a badge, very respectable. Last time I was there there was a Calvert county police officer in a full on tactical green bullet proof vest with pistol and AR-15 loaded magazines in pouches on his tactical vest, also lots of "morale patches" he also had a pistol on his hip and also a second pistol on his tactical vest and many more magazines. This makes customers very uncomfortable, this is a grocery store not a war zone. Great example your are setting for the children, Calvert county cops. This is concerning that he feels the need to be armed to the teeth like he is in the Middle East. He should be fired or reprimanded. What a terrible embarrassing standard you are setting. Not sure why your small ego needs to manifest into you current tactical war zone image. I will avoid nicks of Calvert, as there's many other places I can shop. read more

Knew that I would be in the area, so where else would I go when there is a craving for a bomb deli sammich? Like the others, Nicks is a grocery store, with awesome deli and meat sections. The prices and quality of meat cannot be surpassed, and my sammiches are always fresh. This Nicks ran smoothly, the staff were uber friendly, and the food was made pretty quick. My only gripe is I swear the sandwich got a wee bit smaller. I'm used to the meats and veggies busting out of the seams of the sandwich so much so that I can only finish one half. Not so much at this location, it's okay though, I'll always come to Nicks it just reminds me of home. read more

My fiance and I come down to his parents house in Prince Frederick pretty often, and this was my first time at Nick's. We went in to pick up a good cut of meat to use in the dehydrator to make jerky, but I honestly could have left with a full cart. This place is my new Calvert County obsession! Nick's is a small specialty food store. It's not a place you could go to in lieu of your standard, large supermarket, but is worth a trip to supplement your grocery shopping with really quality meats and other higher end products. The selection of meat was impressive, and it all looked really fresh. Nick's also has a lot of products from their own line, most notably an expansive line of seasoning. I bought a standard size of "Southern Maryland chicken and rib rub" for under $3, and I have no doubt that it'll be awesome. You can literally buy an entire tub of what essentially comes down to being Nick's version of Old Bay for about $10. The liquor, wine and beer selection is also impressive. There were some really interesting brands that I had never seen before. But, most exciting to me personally, they had SWEETWATER, a beer I used to drink when I lived in Atlanta! I have never seen it in Maryland before, so I was especially surprised to find it at a little store on the Chesapeake Bay! We also decided to split a cannoli, which I had read some positive reviews about. The shell was a little bit crumbly, and the filling only had a few chocolate chips in it. But the filling was really light, almost more like a whipped cream, and wasn't so sweet that it would give you a toothache. As someone who ordinarily doesn't have a huge sweet tooth, I loved that! They also fill the cannoli for you upon ordering, which means it's a lot more fresh than what you'd find in your standard bakery or diner. I'm looking forward to coming back here pretty much every time we come to Prince Frederick. We're never buying our meats at the local supermarkets again! read more

I came for a steak and left with a basket full. Nicks is probably the best grocery store in southern Maryland! For starters, their meat counter is next level! They have several workers behind the counter ready to help and cut you up a nice piece of happiness. While you're waiting, head on over to their extensive local beer collection and find the perfect accompaniment for your evening meal. My wife already had lunch plans but their homemade pizza crust and sauce was calling my name and it did not disappoint! Got all the way back to DC to discover that they gave me NO condiments on my Italian hoagie (no lettuce, tomato, onion, oil, oregano mayo, NOTHING) and gave me chicken salad instead of the potato salad that I ordered. If you're that stupid you really have no business working the deli counter. Used to recommend them to everyone but now I will just have to tell people how incompetent they are. Really!!! The best! Even in these difficult times, these folks continue to have the best meat and butcher shop in So. Md. They treat you like you are family. When they aren't crazy busy , they are cracking jokes and are funny and pleasant. When they are busy they are polite and efficient. But they pay attention and care about each customer. One time I ordered some NY strips cut and my butcher opened the large cut and then hesitated. He called over a colleague and had him look at it. They talked for a bit. Then they threw the whole big thing away and got a new one. I have no idea what they saw but they weren't going to give me steaks that they didn't approve of. Or give them to anyone else. THAT is service and taking care of the customer like family!!! I will also add that the folks that are in the wine and liquor section are also very knowledgeable and have helped me find exactly what I needed. read more

In Calvert County, you can't swing a groundhog without smacking into a Safeway or Food Lion, so when Nick's came to town, I was thrilled. Granted, it wasn't the Whole Foods or Trader's Joe's I've been lighting candles for, but it was a step in the right direction. Nick's originated in, of all places, Waldorf. I remember it as a great Italian market, a place I could find items I used to travel to Philly for. This new location is a little different. This Nick's is an attempt at an almost boutique grocery experience. It's neat as a pin...almost disturbingly so, and it's small with wide aisles. There's a small selection of upscale products that I barely give notice to. Why? Because for me, Nick's of Calvert is about three things: Steak, wine, and cannoli. Cover your eyes, my vegetarian friends, this is about to get bloody. Nick's butchers are masters and the butcher shop located in the back of the store is a meat-eaters dream come true. A Canivore Carnival! I have NEVER seen such a beautiful selection of beef cuts, porks, sausages (including Nick's signature Italian offering), Fowl, and lamb in my life! The staff behind the block cuts to exact specification as well and it's so fresh, I swear I hear animal noises back there. The second bonus point, Wine! In Maryland, some crazy Puritan made sure we can't buy wine or beer at the grocery, but Nick's has managed to circumnavigate that little speedbump in my dining happiness and they have a remarkably nice selection of wines in the store. Okay, got my steak, got my wine...onto the CANNOLI! Honestly, I have my route planned. After heading straight to the butcher in the back, and zipping up with wine aisle, it's a short dive over to little bakery. I couldn't even tell you what the bakery offers, all I can focus on is the cannoli. And it's GOOD cannoli. Really good. Like, so good I eat one in the truck on the way home good. Returned some possibly contaminated crab meat imported from Venezuela that the Dept of Health warned not to consume. Manager wanted to debate and say it was an isolated incident and got an attitude when I said it wasn't. She said they pulled all the crab meat from the shelf...so, it obviously wasn't an isolated incident. Don't take it personally because I wanted to return something that could possibly have my whole household sick. In response to Nick : I think you're misinterpreting my review. Your manager copped an attitude when I returned the crabmeat. The Health Dept issued a warning and I didn't want it. The whole point of my review was...instead of minimizing the issue, just refund my money. No need to be offended or get an attitude like I said it was Nick's fault. I would have returned the crabmeat from whatever store I bought it from. Instead, the manager took it personally. It seems like you're taking it personally also. Be accountable and say you're sorry the manager was rude. Your issue should be with DOH, not me...the customer. read more

On a leisurely Sunday drive to Southern Maryland, we stumbled upon Nicks by chance. This was our hometown favorite as a child growing up in Clinton, Md. (though this is an upscale version of the mom and pop store I remember). I don't know anyone who has experienced Nick's treasures that could drive by without stopping. It is the place of choice for any fresh red meat or sausage imaginable. They also offer an excellent selection of Italian Products and seafood. My NY friend was with me on our journey this day and was in awe of the meat case. By luck we managed to sneak in before closing, it was a Sunday and they close at 5 PM. I sent him off for the wine while I ordered a variety of sausages from the meat counter. With sausage and wine in hand, we meet at the deli counter to order the best Italian Sub around. Made on home made bread, inexpensive and too die for. The employees here were all helpful and pleasant. The gentleman in the wine aisle even took the time to assist my friend in selecting a bottle. No one rushed us, even though we ended up at the register within minutes to spare of closing time. read more
