I couldn't help but stand and watch how well he worked, careful footing, tiny pruning sheets, totalky enveloped in his toil. I bumped into a volunteer who told me a bit about the lake behind the main building, the picnic area, the baseball fields --- a sweetheart of a lady, and so generous with her time. I loved the tall pine trees and the pine straw bed they laid down around the picnic table area. We sat breathing in the sweetest air, observing peace -- absorbing tranquility, this is a wonderfully calming place.

My most recent visit was for two days of volunteer work with my running club, which hosts a race that begins and ends in the park. Cannon Park's most prominent feature is the raised platform with four columns, which are the last remnants of the old Charleston Museum that burned down in 1981. Lately, people have used sidewalk chalk to write inspirational quotes and positive messages on the columns. For dog parents, Cannon Park is the place to go. Your pups will meet plenty of other pups to social with, as this seems like Charleston's token dog park. I'm not sure if dogs are supposed to be off leash in this park or not, but they often are. The park has doggy bags and waste receptacles, but watch your step as not everyone cleans up. I almost slipped stepping into a few holes as well, and I wish the city would give the park some TLC and level those so no one gets hurt. The park has a small playground, which is shaded but the equipment looks like it's seen better days. Although the Charleston City Parks website claims the park has wifi, it is spotty at best, so I wouldn't count on it. If you're hungry or thirsty while in the park, there's a Walgreens and a gas station very close by. This simple park doesn't have a huge tourist draw, which could be a plus. Since it's so close to the hospitals, it's the perfect place to go for a walk for some fresh air and a little escape from the medical community.

From the list below, the thing I use the most is the walking trails. It's a great little trail with doggie pot stops on the way. I recently realized they have a couple horseshoe pits with backboards too! This is a new park. As signage inside indicates, this land apparently belonged to some sort of…read morereligious institution and was recently bought by the state. They are converting it into an event space, which hasn't really started yet, so outside of some restrooms the building is blocked off as if anyone who walked through it was in mortal danger. They describe the current status of the park as a "soft opening", during which one can utilize the outdoor areas for picnic space and such. And when you get a look at them, you'll see why. This plot of land has splendid views looking out over the harbor, where the Ravenel bridge, Fort Sumter, and the city itself can be viewed clearly. The waterside is grassy, but you can walk along it for a bit and there was an enormous population of small crabs to watch skittering around. There were several different spaces to sit with this view, including a gazebo with a screen around it if you are concerned about bugs (which were not a huge issue when I dropped in, but I'm sure they are some of the time). There is no charge to get in, and while it's not an especially happening place, it's good that this land has opened up for public use.
