Hot day, a holiday and they don't have enough power carts for the players. Also, the water to the buildings is shut off so they have no drinks because the snack bar/restaurant won't open. There are 30 players waiting for the morning tee times carts to come in and turn around to play. read more

Fun course, well kept with average to good greens. They have limited carts so we had to wait 20 minutes past our tee time for a cart. The employees there were angry and rude. Starter and ranger specifically were not very pleasant to interact in with. Will not be back given the interactions with employees but if not for that would play again. read more

I love the golfers on here that complain about 5 hours to play & it's the all Rangers or staff's fault. It's not that half the golfers that go to play can't hit a ball 10 yards or they take 10 shots to make par? It's the Rangers or staff's fault that there's slow play when 400 golfers show up to play & they don't show up until 2 minutes before their tee times & the starters have to work some magic to fit everyone in so they can enjoy themselves or the ones that bother the starters in the booth whether they have called their time yet? Believe you me you know it when they are looking for you regarding your time. They're more concerned of running everything smoothly than you are. Leave the booth alone. They'll get you out. Most of the players here are over 70 years old. You're going to get slow play. A ranger out there is not going to help this unless they follow the slow players all day. You have two amazing 18 holes courses & it's always the staffs fault that the complainers never enjoy themselves? They're quick to blame when they have never worked at a golf course in their life & as busy as this one. This is 36 holes of what looks like a private course most of the time. I've observed this on multiple occasions. Just remember these people do not want to make your day of golf a miserable experience. Everyone has to work with each other. Golf is an expensive sport as we all know & it can be frustrating when your day doesn't go well, but don't blame the staff all the time. Hopefully you do end up having a great time & it outweighs the bad times. Then the there's the golfers that complain, but they think the courses are their private drinking bars. Signs all over the place that says no alcohol or coolers & they bring cases of beer to drink or bottles of liquor & then discharge their empties wherever they feel like it. The poor cart girls are out there trying to make some $$$ & see bottles of stuff they don't even sell. Then the ones that act belligerent when confronted because they're drunk. I've seen tailgating in the parking lot like it's a football game. The poor staff has to enforce drinking rules? I don't see any of them with law badges or guns on their belts. I've seen some drunk golfers almost have fights with the staff because they were told they can't bring their own alcohol. So go play some golf. Respect each other & hopefully you shoot the best round of your life here. read more

Part of the Monmouth county golf courses. Two courses here: South course is traditional; North course is links style. Both are nice layouts, architecturally pleasing, fun to play, and not overly difficult for the average golfer. Conditions are very good for a public facility. Fairways rolling and undulating. Greens fairly straight forward and not too difficult. Rough is consistent and thick. Course length is on the shorter side, especially from the white tees so if you are use to playing the whites at other courses then play the gold tees here. I wish the greens were a little better condition (reason for 4 stars instead of 5) as they have quite a few old ball marks. Bunkers are rarely raked. These are more indicative of the type of golfer who plays here rather than the maintenance of the course. Lots of hackers out there which can slow the pace of play. Cost is very reasonable especially for non resident. Best bet cost wise is mid week after 2pm ($33 walking) or 4pm ($20 walking) and the courses are usually wide open at this time of day. My experience with the staff has been nothing but positive. They are friendly and helpful - much nicer than most courses I've played. If you haven't yet played here, give it a shot, you will enjoy it. read more

Prior to going to Charleston Springs I read the reviews. The reviews all have a reoccurring theme. Great facility and the staff is rude. I have to echo the reviews. As a Monmouth County resident, and a golfer who plays the County courses, Monmouth County should address the rude staff they are employing at their facility. I went with a foursome. Two of us are vets. I was told through another golfer that the course has a veterans discount. So when checking in I asked for the discount for me and my friend who was visiting from Missouri. The older man behind the counter was rude about our veteran status. He asked for our DD214s. Which we do not carry or travel with. I provided my NJ drivers license. Which has my veteran status on. I provided my DD214 to the State DMV as proof. They in return stamp VETERAN on my DL. The old timer says he can't except that. I asked why he can't except a drivers license with VET status, and explain that's why the state has provided this service so we don't have to carry the single most important document you have from the service. He had to go and ask another staff member. Comes back and excepts my NJ DL, but informs me that my friend has to pay full price. At this point I say just let me pay for both of us. I asked him if he thought two 45 yo men were trying to pull one over on him. He said we should travel with our documents. For a $10 savings it's not worth it. I wish I could post the entire conversation. Trust me when I left two different people walked up to us and apologized for the way the guy was talking to us, and thanked us for our service. Then we went to check in with the starter and get our cart. The twos guys in the starting box were rude as well. They had everyone waiting all crazed up to. We played a great round. The pace of play was ok course is very nice. The staff there is horrible. This is why I normally don't advertise I am a Vet and look for anything. I can think of better ways to embarrass myself and a friend over a $10 savings. read more

after 4pm is twilight for 37 bucks with a cart. I played on the south side. The course is pretty short from the whites, so I played from the gold. The rough is pretty thick and can lose your ball pretty easy. Open course, just keep it on the fairway. The greens are pretty quick and a good challenge. read more

Played here (south course) for first time, course is in great shape , and I think it is by far the best of the monmouth county parks courses. Staff at checkin/clubhouse were friendly, starters good at being attentive and getting you out on time. Played the front 9 fast but then a 2 some appeared out of nowhere on the 10th (I guess they were just playing 9 and they were sent to the 10th tee), that slowed us down a bit. For the price, course layout, and conditions I was very satisfied. read more

Played here on 11/2/19. Unfortunately we had to wait close to an hour and a half past our tee time due to frost conditions earlier in the morning. The price is definitely expensive for a November round of golf. Even after having to wait that long they still charged for a small bucket of balls to hit at the range. Having said that the course was awesome. Very good condition fair ways, tee boxes, and greens were in very good shape. A lot of leaves but that's to be expected so hit the ball straight! read more

A buddy from CT and I (from MD) met here for a couple of rounds this weekend, and we had nothing but terrific experiences. Kudos to ALL staff members: - pro shop: set us up with initial tee times (Sat PM & Sun PM) and helped us update the Sun PM time to early AM when weather forecast seemed bleak (which turned out to be a false alarm). - starters: were friendly and courteous but very efficient in keeping everyone on time. - grill: thanks for the fabulous lunches! - maintenance: awesome courses!!! Being a Country Club Rat - I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to golf courses from conditions to pace of play to amenities so this will be based on a PUBLIC GOLF COURSE SCALE not comparing it to Country clubs it's simply not fair. As Public Golf Courses go this one is seriously off the charts folks. Two 18 Hole courses North which is a wide open fair test links style course with generous landing areas, not to difficult greens, with lots of fairway bunkers and plenty of Heather / Rough... where the rough itself is PENAL so keep it in the fairway. Conditions were immaculate though the greens were fair if not on the slow side. South Course is more traditional with hills, trees etc. Also well maintained and although I enjoyed the North course more the South course is the tougher of the two. Practice range is good $5.00 or a very small bucket of balls is a bit of a rip off... Large putting green that simulated speeds very close to course conditions. $64 non county resident with powercart on a mid week. Downs.... NO RANGERS AT ALL and 4some ahead was at least 2 groups behind entire course and had everyone backed up. $6.00 in addition to greens fee to make a tee time per person? WTH... Pace of play slow.. see Rangers comment above. NO appreciable rain since Friday and on a Monday many fairway bunkers were still filled with casual water or some had sand completely washed out.. Public golf course normalcy nobody rakes a dam trap... WTH PEOPLE... All and all conditions wise this place is an absolute must. read more

This is part of the Monmouth county courses and in my opinion it is by far the best. Many people will say hominy is better but I would disagree. Charleston is a 36 hole complex with a North and South course. I've played both and I can't tell you which is better. The touch is meticulously kept and is very thick. Gives the course an added degree of difficulty. The fairways are also top notch and are nicely complemented with the fast Greens. The only complaint I have is that the staff has lashed out at me once, but I wouldn't fault the course for that. I would suggest doing the "9 hole plus" option. You get a cart and "as many holes as you can do" past 3pm. read more

$95 for an out of county at the end of December to play in nothing but goose and deer crap. I know it's out of season but fairways and greens are not taken care of. Divot holes on every green not to mention goose crap on just about every green. For the money I paid I expected much much better. Absolutely terrible read more

I've played the North and south courses. Both are usually in great shape and the layout design keeps you out of serious trouble. I have played on hundreds of different courses and I must unfortunately say that from the front desk to the starter to even some of the grounds crew these have to be some of the most miserable, unfriendly people I have ever met. Rude is the rule of the day.... just generally unhappy people that could use some customer service training. Too bad. It's a very nice facility. read more

Played the south course which is amazing and fun. Excellent condition and the greens are in great shape. Stay on the fairways to score of course. note:(If you play a fade consistently you can score on this course) Starter is definitely in need of some happy pills or customer service training. Having worked in the business for 34 years at 6 different golf facilities. The pro shop staff is NOT versed in hospitality as well as the starters. I guess it flows downhill. Fortunately there is one guy there that gets it. The on line tee time reservation is awful and very inconvenient. 6 bucks extra to make a reservation on the phone while most of the staff sits around and does nothing. Leave it to bureaucrats. No rangers equals the chance of a 5 hour round. The greens on the north course are much nicer than the south. I understand they have different superintendents for each course. This is highly unusual and inefficient in the golf business. Again leave it to bureaucrats. They will probably blame the unions. This is what happens when bureaucrats are in charge. I understand it was much better all the way around years ago. The conditions on the North course were outstanding especially the greens. As a result the value is great, in spite of the other short comings. My hat is off to the superintendent. Great job it's not easy to produce conditions like a private country club while getting a lot of play. OR maybe they are not getting a lot of play anymore because patrons are being treated like constituents. read more

Date Played - July 30, 2012 Course Played - Charleston Springs South Staff - very professional. Tee Boxes - Ok but not great, several were in need of repair from unfilled divots. Fairways - several had more than an average amount of bare spots. The back 9 appears to be worst than the front 9. Greens - lots of un-repaired ball marks and many had areas that were blotchy and inconsistent. The pin placements on many holes were in areas approximately 6' or less from their green's edge. In short, much too far forward, back, left, or right. Whoever placed the pins is either not a golfer or just incompetent. Pins - poor, the flags are all the same (yellow) color and do not indicate if the pin is up, in the middle, or back. Practice Green - It needs to be mowed in a manner that mimics the course greens. Practice Tee - Lots of divots. It needs maintenance. A strip of artificial turf might help to give the grass areas a break from getting beat up from so much usage. Bunker - In a word, lousy. They need sand and almost all had standing water. They looked like they had not received any maintenance in weeks. Yes, we've had some rain - buy a portable pump! Overall - A disappointment. While the layout is great I suggest you save your money a play elsewhere until this course gets some good maintenance and upgrades. read more

Just a comment about John K's review: You played the course less than two days after the storm that destroyed Freehold. The maintenance guys did a heck of a job clearing trees and other debris. If every golfer respected the ethos of the game and fixed their ball marks and divots the course would be nearly perfect. read more
