He made it easy and told me to come by. When I showed up, JB took care of me right away. He gave me a full tour and made me feel like I had been there before. The space really impressed me. Two large mat areas with plenty of room to move, heavy bags set up, and a full strength and conditioning area in the back. They even have a massage therapist right next door. It is honestly one of the nicest setups I have seen. JB ran the class I attended and he stood out immediately. Super personable, remembered my name, and just had that easygoing presence that puts people at ease. You can tell he has a deep well of experience, but he carries it in a grounded way. He represents what you hope to find in the jiu jitsu community. The training environment was great. Everyone was friendly, joking around, and still serious about getting better. I never felt out of place or pressured. The adult gi class had a good mix of skill levels, and the techniques we worked on were practical with smart variations that I can actually use. After the instruction we got some solid rounds in and I left feeling like I had a real session, not just a drop in workout. What really stood out to me was that the day after I trained, Frank texted me to ask how everything went. That meant a lot. It showed me they are not just running classes, they actually care about the people who walk through the door. I will absolutely be back the next time I am in Richmond. Whether you are brand new or have been training for years, this is a place where you can grow and enjoy the process.

Where Valhalla lacks in a "No Shoes, No Service" policy, it excels in providing a venue for fresh and seasoned martial arts practitioners of all ages to hone their craft in a plethora of styles, including but not limited to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, MMA, Kickboxing, and Muay Thai. You'll be hard pressed to find another gym with such a wealth of engaging opportunities under the same roof. What really sets it apart isn't just the exceptional coaching from its founder and resident Black Belt Professor, Coach Andrew; it's the emphasis placed on personal development from all angles. The atmosphere that's been cultivated at Valhalla ensures a healthy and positive environment where everyone involved is engaged and committed to helping each other progress both physically and mentally. Not only that, but the condition of the facility is par-none and always kept clean. As a slight testament to the caliber of Valhalla's curriculum, I've personally garnered a greater sense of confidence, learned countless practical skills, and gained a greater appreciation for cold showers. Although I've only been a student for a relatively short amount of time, I'm certain I'll be here for the long run.

Every kid came from all backgrounds and diversity, from different ages will come in with their uniform, bow once they go on the mat, and take turns practicing with their partners. They're the most respectful 5-6 year olds, teenagers, and young adults I've seen. We've only been there since September, but our son has grown and matured. He demonstrates their philosophy: courage, integrity, and perseverance. That's what I want for my son, I want him to grow up and become a problem solving adult that can persevere even when he faces challenges and bigger enemies. He shows respect to his teachers and his coaches are the type of adults that he looks up to. Judo is a better type of martial art especially for kids since they're minimal injury comparing to something like taekowdo. You or your opponent wouldn't hurt each other's head, and that's important especially for students who need their IQ on par. I highly recommend this place. P.S. In response to another review I read here, I think every one takes dark humor and tough love differently. Coach Laffon looks intimidating sometimes, but if you get to know him, he's the type that will back you up when you need him. It's hard to judge someone from a one time bad interaction, or the interpretation of it. The worst people on earth is never the type that can say no to your face. Sometimes the straight forwardness is much more appreciated than the fake smiles. That's also what I want my son to experience. You will meet tough love in coaches, teachers, bosses, and those of your senior. You need to learn humility and respect and how to interact with them. They're not bullies, if they don't like you they won't waste their time on you.
