Our family has been going Total Defense Martial Arts (previously Valley Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) for five years, attending boxing and adult & kids jiujitsu. Under Brian Rose's leadership, the school has worked hard to create a welcoming and safe atmosphere for families. Jiujitsu in particular is a character-building activity that our sons (currently 7 and 9) enjoy and benefit from. It teaches patience, persistence, strength, and emotional control, among many other things. The instructors here do their best to mentor the kids by being good role models. The kids' dad credits jiujitsu and boxing with helping him to stay in shape and really values the friendships he has developed there. Martial arts is a great outlet for him, and he greatly values the idea of learning an art that would allow him to defuse a situation humanely--meaning that self defense doesn't mean you have to maim people. This martial arts school offers outstanding instruction in both American style boxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu for children and adults alike. The instructors are patient, knowledgeable, and thorough in their instruction. The environment is friendly, and parents of children are always encouraged to stay and observe their children's classes. Seating for guests who are not training is right at the edge of the matted training area. The facility is scrubbed and cleaned daily. Children's jiu-jitsu classes are taught with self-defense in mind and not as a combat aggressive striking system. This place is an important part of my family's life. I train here, and both of my boys train here. The facility is clean, and the trainers and students there are great friends and an extension of the family. Aside from being a great workout, learning BJJ and boxing teaches useful self-defense skills and also presents a great many character-building challenges: we're constantly learning about humility, respect, self-discipline, and interpersonal communication. All this relatively inexpensively, too! I used to go to a TKD school (not around here) that was a belt mill, constantly soaking its students for money. TDMA is the complete opposite. read more
