However, I have been affiliated with the university in some way or another throughout my life. Whether for film festivals, librabry visits, collabs with the art school I attended, seeing President Obama speak, or attending ska shows (that's right, back in the day it was the place to be for a good show), I have spent a lot of time on campus. It was a nice walk from my place in Bloomfield as well. The campus is beautifully landscaped with gorgeous buildings. The architecture is just wonderful. Staff and faculty that I have come in contact with over the years are stellar human beings.

The Ship2Pitt program allows students to ship 4 boxes of their belongings to the school for free, which is awesome...EXCEPT IF YOU LIVE IN HAWAII OR ALASKA, OR ANY OTHER US TERRITORY THAT'S NOT PART OF THE 48 CONTIGUOUS STATES!!! It is going to be expensive enough in order to get everything we need in order to get our daughter there, for example, airline ticket and now shipping cost for her belongings. I called University to ask about this policy and the reason they won't service Hawai', Alaska, or other territories is because they can't guarantee that the boxes will get there on time or get there safely. Guess what folks...UPS, FedEx, USPS can't 100% guarantee that boxes being shipped from the contiguous 48 states will get there safely and on time! University of Pittsburgh needs to service all the United States to include Hawai'i and Alsaka (last I checked they were still part of the USA) and other territories or take the Ship2Pitt program away entirely! This is discrimination based on geography!

It also houses a 386 seat auditorium suitable for concerts, conference venues and graduation events. It's beautiful and stately appointments include marble bathrooms and a small restaurant. The Mellon Institute of Industrial Research was founded in 1913 by Andrew and Richard B. Mellon to honor their father, Thomas Mellon. The Institute performed government and industrial contract research and was first a department in the University of Pittsburgh. In 1927, the Mellon Institute was incorporated as an independent nonprofit. In 1938, the Mellon Institute's building was completed and the Mellon Institute moved to this location. In 1967, with the merger of Carnegie Tech with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research to become Carnegie Mellon University the Mellon Institute continued as the Carnegie Mellon Research Institute (CMRI) performing contract research. CMRI closed in 2001 and its programs are now run by other parts of the university and spin-offs which now occupy the stately building.

It was a small enough class size that, during my four years, there would be times when I would have either one other person in a certain class or I would be by myself. On the fun side, we would usually have a holiday party right before Winter Break for students and families, which was always a great way for the school community to come together every year. If you're looking for a high school to send your kid(s) to that does not have big class sizes, please consider going to The University School.

The school is VERY small, and it offers the opportunity for kids in the 7th grade to interact with kids in their senior year. I had classes that ranged from 6-8 kids per instructor to 2 kids per instructor. Generally speaking, it's an exclusive private school, as expected, but I had classmates that were very bright, but had been kicked out of public schools. They were rare, but still there, but at no time was I worried about my safety, if I lived in Pittsburgh, I would feel safe sending my kids here. It's been so many years, I can't say for sure if it is still awesome, but check it out. Oh, and Mr. Rogers used to come by often to see the Headmistress. What an amazing person he was. RIP Mr. Rogers.

My 17 year old son and I enjoyed a 1 hour walking tour of the Pitt campus. The highlight was…read moredefinitely the Cathedral of Learning - an architectural wonder and landmark that began construction in 1926 and was completed in 1939 in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The in-person tour is highly recommended if you want to get a feel for the urban environment of the campus - free t-shirts are also provided with the Pitt logo. During the campus tour, you'll see the interior of classroom buildings, a dormitory for 1st year students, and a glimpse of Heinz Memorial Chapel. Founded in 1787, the university is a leading research institution where the polio vaccine was developed (by Dr. Jonas Salk). I think it's an impressive campus to visit - especially the Cathedral of Learning which is open to the public. You'll be amazed to learn that it's the second tallest academic building in the Western Hempishere. The interior does resemble a Gothic cathedral - but the space and tables are dedicated to students and classroom learning. Well worth a stop if you're in town!

It is very cool on the inside with spiral…read morestairs, windowed bridges to other buildings, modern high tech classrooms and Tazza Dora (the reason for my frequent visits). In my opinion it is incredibly ugly from the outside not in keeping with the stately yellow brick decor on the rest of campus. Love it for its function, hate it for its aesthetics. It is also ironic that Bill Gates, a college drop-out, can get his name on college buildings, donating far less tha typically required of other donors of named buildings. The Hillman's on the other hand are a treasured name in Pittsburgh philanthropy. All of in all my lower rating reflects its distraction from the attractive green roofed, yellow-brick buildings on campus. To each their own I suppose.
