We are always on the lookout for unique venues when traveling. Strolling thru historic downtown San Jose del Cabo, this caught our eye. It's hard to pay attention when every vendor is inviting you in to sample their wares, but we felt this one was worth stopping to read the menu. A friendly gentleman showed us the menu and gave us a coupon for free drinks ( with a minimum order). As we were not hungry at the moment, and more window shopping was required to build up out appetite, we took the coupon and continued on our quest to find a necklace for a pendant my wife has. An hour or so later, after finding the necklace she was wanting, it was time to reward our grumbling stomach with some much needed nourishment. We had looked at other establishments along the way, but the promise of fresh caught fish was what reeled us in. After re-reading the menu, we decided to go light instead of overeating and split the ceviche and to tacos. A generous portion of ceviche was cooked perfectly in citrus and then drained and shaped into a thick round stack. Served with house made chips and saltine crackers, it was more than enough for us, but I wanted to try a couple of tacos as well. One Sea Bass and one octopus, on a flour tortilla, again, to wears cooked and seasoned well and we enjoyed them both as well. I jacked that I could eat a half dozen of each! If you are strolling old town, stop by and enjoy a great meal under the shade of the awning with fans to keep you cool. The also put an interesting ( at least to us) fly/ mosquito repellent out. A stereo can in a holder with a lime setting on a screen above the flame. It worked and we were not bothered by pesky flying pests while enjoying the fantastic meal. read more

Monday, September 9 Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas 89℉ / 68% Humidity Our cruise ship stopped at Cabo, but we spent most of the day exploring San José. It's a somewhat sleepy town about 30 minutes away. Highly recommended if you are not a party person and would like to enjoy some peace and quiet. Very walkable with laid back vibes and a flourishing art scene. We stumbled across Chato's and decided to stop by for lunch after perusing the menu for a bit. There was a mix of locals, expats, and other tourists dining here. Seating is all outdoors, but there is a roof to protect you from the elements. Their menu contains seafood, tacos, burgers, pasta, other entrees, and drinks. The amount of flies swarming around was super annoying. I know it's mostly out of the restaurant's control but wow, those were the most aggressive flies I've had to swat away from my food. The staff members were kind enough to bring fans to blow them out of the area. They also lit a small fire that is supposed to deter flies. Didn't help much but that was nice. I got the sea bass, which was their catch of the day. It was well cooked and flakey, but could use more flavor. The accompanying rice, bread, and salad were fine. read more

We visited here during shoulder season (early October) so things seemed pretty sleepy in town, but "Chatos" had a good vibe going. We sat outside and Dennis and Malaquías (our servers ) made sure the fans were aimed appropriately so that we had a nice breeze. The seafood was amazing. I had the catch of the day, Red Snapper, and my parents had the seafood molcajete (served in a volcanic stone bowl). All of our dishes including the ceviche appetizer were absolutely delicious and the margarita was fresh and the ratios perfect. The meseros were attentive but not overwhelming and seemed genuinely like nice people. This was easily the best meal I have had in San Jose del Cabo! read more

Solid meals for solid prices. In a day where some charge $8 or more for a taco, this place has great food at reasonable rates. Had a dinner and two breakfasts here in the past week. The Red Chilaquiles were tasty and some nice options for enjoying them. Chile Relleno was great, and the wife had a whole sea bass, she said was fantastic. Being a chilehead, I was pleased with the taster platter of different salsas and sauces. Simply a solid and inviting meal and establishment. We were looking for authentic Mexican food and found it at Chato's in town. I ordered the chile rellenos with rice and beans and it was the best. The relleno had a light coating with a mild red sauce and a large chile and cheese inside. It came with two and I regretted giving my husband one of them, lol. He ordered the fried Red Snapper and that was delicious! The refried beans were creamy and the rice was delish along with homemade tortillas! Service was excellent and our waiters were so attentive! While visiting San Jose yesterday, I wanted to try a new place for lunch. I came across Chato's on the corner which looked fun and inviting with its outdoor seating. Wow didn't expect to find bargain seafood in this location. Affordable. Fresh. Big portion 2 shrimp taco for 140 pesos. Empanada as big as 1/2 plate for 70 pesos. We tried both marlin and shrimp empanada. Spaghetti with shrimp $11 usd but it was a little spicy ? Weird so we ate just the shrimp. I called Chatos the day before the Thursday Night Art Walk in San José and they were nice enough to save a table for us. The food was delicious although it took a bit to come out. We had a good amount of drinks and the Fried Red Snapper per couple, highly recommend! Overall, service was pretty good and the owner was there as well. Give it a chance, we enjoyed it. read more

Perfect blend of lime citrus with fresh ingredients... 5 stars Fish stew was basic tomatoes broth he with fish, octopus and shrimp in a onion carrot and celery trinity combo. Not bad... very basic for 180p. Fish taco had very little fish and wish it was a step lower that what I found in mall seafood places. Overall good but not exceptional. read more

I was hesitant to eat here but the owner assured me their food was vegetarian friendly and they did not mix their meat products with other products. That is very important to me. Our first meal was stellar and decided to come back again. This is not the cheapest meal but it was certainly worth what we paid. 2x1 margaritas makes up for the higher pricing. The food tasted very fresh. It was made to order so that to me is a value add. Axel was our server for two straight days. He was very attentive and was good at remembering our preferences from our previous visit and even our names! Just a wonderful person he was. What a disappointment this evening. After coming to the restaurant two days ago and having joy above meal this evening's presentation and Rood , staff offered us a horrendous experience. We were served tacos with boiled chicken on a soft corn shell with nothing accompanying it. The children of the owner were obnoxiously rude and charged us $39 for the insult. Come here if you want to get robbed, we had a okay dinner and plenty of drinks for at least a hour and at the end they mentioned the credit card machine was down so we had to go to the atm downstairs which I'm sure they own or have a profit on, they charged me 23$ to take my money out, I still wanted to leave a fair tip and the atm dispensed American dollars so I asked for ten dollars back and they gave me back 8$ saying the owner has a different exchange rate than the rest of the country so they wanted to rob 2$ more then the 23$ from the ATM.
