I really wanted to like this place. The staff was attentive, the atmosphere was nice, and our server was genuinely great. No complaints there at all. But the food was the worst Mexican food I've ever had, and I live in Northern California. The salsa came in pre-packaged plastic cups with no flavor. Not house made, not fresh, just pre packaged plastic containers that tasted like nothing. A bottle of Tapatio would have been a massive improvement. The chips were mostly broken crumbs which set the tone for the rest of the meal. The enchiladas with beans and rice were all completely flavorless. No seasoning, nothing. I don't even know how you pull that off with enchiladas with red sauce (btw, 0 red sauce, just shredded lettuce). The Caesar salad was four large romaine leaves with some chicken thrown on top. The worst Mexican food in California still has some flavor to it. At the time of payment I was only given three tipping options starting at 15%, 18%, or 21%. For the quality of food we received that felt like a stretch. The service deserved a good tip but the food made it hard to justify those being the only options. It felt pushy and predatory on tourists. I also want to mention that a friend of mine left an honest review and the owner's response was to publicly call him a liar. That is incredibly unprofessional. Customers shouldn't be insulted for leaving honest feedback. If you can't handle criticism without resorting to name calling, the food isn't the only thing that needs work here. Again, the staff was great and I don't blame them at all. But I won't be back. If your there to watch a game and grab a drink, good place, if your there to taste food, last place on earth. Also update, they had my friends review deleted... wild. read more

We were visiting Cabo Mexico through a cruise and when we got off the ship we decided to hunt for tacos. John's Place wasn't too far from port. They had great service and made fresh guacamole in front of us. It was fun to see the servers in action. They decorated the restaurant with Mexican theme colors, arts and designs. Coke in a bottle was very good and refreshing. They also had toilets for paying customers. Not all restaurants have toilets and if you need to go prepare to pay for it. read more

You've gotta be nuts to not like this place. I'm literally writing this review while sitting here soaking up tequila and tacos. Close to the boardwalk, and yeah I'm California born and raised, so I know tacos. This is a solid spot to grab tacos and a beer. Service was on point (minus the flies, but hey... it's Cabo ‍). We came in for lunch and ordered several tacos (steak, chicken, fish). All were excellent and reasonably priced!! We saw several people order the table side guacamole which looked good too. We also got a Margarita which was good. Although we enjoyed the food and drinks, the service was not great. It took them several minutes to take our order and we never saw our server after our initial order was placed. My husband and I were on a cruise that stopped in Cabo and stayed overnight. We've walked past this restaurant many times and even taken pictures with our cousin, John, who cruised with us several months ago. We finally decided to eat dinner here. Best tacos w've had in Mexico hands down! We got the steak and the chicken with flour tortillas- meat was flavorful, cooked well, salsas were delicious (one mild and one spicy), and service was great - we had an excursion in less than 30 minutes, they knew and food came out in time. Ambience was chill. It's an indoor outdoor kind of setting, which is nice cause you get the fresh air from outside. Their sinks were very clean to wash your hands before you ate, which is something I always look for. Great time highly recommend! Would come back to Cabo just for these tacos lol read more

Absolutely terrible customer service.... The restaurant is basically empty that should be your sign not to go there. It is nearly impossible to place your order. My ribs were terrible and the restaurant refused to give me another meal instead they wanted to argue and question why I didn't like their food. I have to honestly say after being here an entire week and eating everywhere from fancy to boat that this was the best food I've had since here. We were actually looking to eat on the water when this place was suggested by someone when we parked. We were all skeptical just because it wasn't the plan and we really wanted to be on the water. I'm so glad I made the group come here. I'd say the staff was attentive and provides great service, but that's been EVERYWHERE I've ever been in Mexico so far (I've been many places to many countries). So, the staff was friendly and great, but the food put them over the top! I honestly could have eaten here daily over and over. I had margaritas, beer and the Baja bacon wrapped Crab stuffed shrimp! It was literally the best stuffed shrimp I've had in my life. I've been MANY places and shrimp is my favorite dish on the planet :) Others in the group got the chicken wings/fries, stuffed burrito, and the chorizo omelette...it was everyone's favorite meal while out here. Everyone agreed this was our best meal while here. Our last trip here, we were told to check out John's for some decent tacos. Next trip, and we are back. The open air restaurant sits right on a street corner, so there is plenty to watch while sipping your ice cold beer. Today's cerveza of choice: Pacifico! I also ordered a couple tacos al pastor. A previous bar we were at was more focused on the Seahawks game than game 5 of the World Series, so we came here as they had more TVs playing the game as well as the audio (even though i can't stand joe buck commentating the Dodgers). I was craving an authentic breakfast burrito on this Saturday morning! So my friend, who is a local, suggested John's Place. The burrito was delicious and hit the spot! On a cruise to Mexico on the brand new carnival ship - Panorama. First stop is Cabo San Lucas and I had to stop at John's place. Been here before so I know it is a great spot. Guacamole is being made fresh on the spot right next to you - you know it is fresh :) All the food here is fresh and being made to order. John's has become our new favorite restaurant in Cabo San Lucas! We had the specials: Steak and 2 Lobster tail ($25.90) and the Lobster (2 tails) and Shrimp ($25.90). The service was wonderful. They even put the Warrior game on for us and turned the house music down so we could hear!!! I usually avoid restaurants named after white guys when I'm in Mexico, but it was my partner's 30th birthday and he wanted a drink and a taco before we boarded our booze cruise and John's Place was across the street from our boarding area. The tacos and the micheladas were great. Later, after the booze cruise, and my partner much drunker, we stopped by here again, this time for some hangover-prevention food. I usually also avoid Italian dishes while in Mexico, but after 10 days of tacos, I was craving some fettuccine alfredo. We started with the tableside guac. It was heavenly, and a huge portion. Next came my fettuccine. I was surprised by how perfectly cooked my fettuccine was, literally better than the pasta I paid 3x as much for at The Pink Door in Seattle. The sauce was incredible, and the asparagus that came on top of the pasta complemented the dish very well. I am still craving more of that fettuccine alfredo. My partner had more tacos and he loved them. The next day and to this day, he doesn't remember what they were like, but I can assure you that he told me that he loved them when he was eating them. Our server was so sweet and patient, an absolute doll that provided excellent service. This is one place that is named after a white guy that I would return to when I am in Mexico. read more

I really wanted to like this restaurant, however, after the quality of food I received, I was just not able to do so. Before I begin, I want to make it clear that the only reason I am not giving a one star rating is because of the amazing service I received from my waiter, Christopher. Service: From the get go, Christopher set a very positive tone. He joked around with both us and the other servers. Everyone he served seemed to have a really good time. Perhaps the most amazing aspect of Christopher's service was that I found that he was originally from the same town that I am from! Everything about Christopher's top notch service was pointing towards an amazing dining experience. Unfortunately, the food itself did not hold up to the same standard. Food: Drinks were pretty solid here! The margaritas contained a bit too much ice, but other than that, I did not find any other problems with them! Our orders took an extremely long time to come out, far longer than what it normally deemed as acceptable. I ordered the seafood pasta, my sister ordered chicken fajitas, and my dad ordered enchiladas. An instant red flag should have been raised when the fajitas were cold and came on a standard plate (which most of know that fajitas are typically steaming so much when they come out that they have to be put onto a skillet). Sadly, that was not the only issue. My dad's enchiladas contained three hairs that we know for certain did not belong to any of us (due to color, size, etc). When we brought this to the attention of the restaurant staff, Christopher was very understanding, but, one of the other servers did not seem to believe us. He insisted that one of the cooks was bald and that the other two wore protective hats. After a bit of conversation, the servers decided to waive the charge on the food for our entire party, leaving just the drinks to pay for... an incredibly nice gesture. Still, the gesture was not enough to forget about the horrible food, thus the two star rating. Simply put: Never coming back here again. In fact, I'm so frustrated that I don't think I can even proofread this review... just to avoid having to rehash my horrible experience. read more
