Not sure why everyone is bashing the service and the fry bread.. but we've been coming here since the early 90s and we love it. The ladies here are quiet but if you talk with them they are so helpful very sweet. They're always happy to let me try on 100 rings before I finally make my choice. They have great souvenirs, snacks, moccasins, tshirts, beautiful rocks and crystals, clean bathroom and a good place out in the parking lot for your doggies... And the fry bread... delicious!! We had the cinnamon and sugar fry bread as well as the beans and cheese and fry bread, all were very yummy!

The Navajo Tacos were disappointing. It was mostly just beans and hardly any ground beef. When asked if we could get one without beans they said the meat and beans were mixed together so they couldn't do that. Which wasn't a huge deal but something to note. I was more disappointed that there was almost no meat and just all beans. And way too many beans, it was just lettuce and beans with the sprinkle of cheese. the fry bread itself was good. But that alone wouldn't be enough for me to go back or recommend it. If they actually put some meat in there it would probably be very good but I can't justify spending $12 on a bean lettuce taco. The shop itself seemed nice and the pricing seemed average. I only looked briefly but didn't look like there was any unique or rare items, just general items you could find at most gift shops. Still fun and good if you're in need of some souvenirs. The people were super friendly and I feel bad not giving a better review but the Navajo Tacos were just not good. I feel like there is potential to easily make improvements so I wouldn't completely write this place off, maybe I just came on an off day. read more

I was driving towards the Petrified National Park when I spotted Chee's Indian Store and Rock Shop. This store has been owned an operated as a Native American business for 47 years. I stopped not so much to see the shop but more about just taking a break from driving. I was really interested in their rock collection which I found to be extensive an organized. You needed to know rocks, minerals and gem stones in order to receive some value from your purchase. Over the years I have done my homework and I'm familiar with some specimens and reasonable pricing. I found their collection all over the place with some reasonably priced items. The petrified wood seemed pricey. It is a cash only business when I visited. Aside from rocks and minerals, they sell common southwestern souvenirs like potted cactus, magnets and polished longhorn cattle skulls. The T-Shirt were interesting like the one that had a photo of Geronimo and three other chiefs that read "America's First Homeland Security, Fighting Terror since1492". They sell handmade rugs produced by Navajo artists. You get a photo of the artist with your purchase. They have other authentic Native American handmade items as well. The items are mainly rugs, pottery and jewelry. The Minnetoaka moccasins and Fry bread seemed tempting but ultimately I passed. Another Native American store is just across the street "Indian City" so you can shop an compare to some degree. read more

The reason I gave it a four instead of 5 stars is because of the prices. That being said, they have cute items for one dollar that were perfect for my grandkids so you can find any price you want. At first, I thought the clerk was very rude and I almost left, but when she realized I needed her help, she went all the way in the back and spent a lot of time helping me find what I wanted. I think maybe they seem rude, when really they don't mean to be. If you have kids, it is a great place to stop! read more

I'm leaving one star but I wish I could leave 0 BEWARE! We were on a long road trip and stopped In to see the shop and use the restroom. The lady with the long black hair seemed annoyed because she thought I was only there to use the restrooms, after she learned I was there to see the store too she became more friendly. They had handmade beaded bracelets I was looking at. There was one in particular I kept picking up and putting back it was 4.99$.. well after finally purchasing the bracelet and a few other items from her store we left. 20 mins into the drive I went to put the bracelet on and realized she switched the price tag. It was 8.99$ which isn't much but she DIDNT say ANYTHING ! Like hey I accidentally marked this wrong and it's actually this price.. BEWARE CHECK YOUR PRICE WHEN YOU PICK UP ITEM AND WHEN YOU LEAVE. In the market for rings and found out via their Instagram page they have a new website and orders can be made there or over the phone. I did not see any rings in my size on the website. I emailed them, and heard back the same afternoon. They sent photos with rings in my size and budget. I chose what I wanted and they were paid for and shipped the following morning. It was a very easy process and I was glad to support a small business on the Navajo Nation. I will definitely purchase again. read more

The Indian tacos were terrible. I paid 22.00 for two tacos and two plain bread with salt. I'm not picky and have had excellent Indian Tacos where I live. The beans had absolutely no seasoning, nothing in fact was seasoned. Even the kids wouldn't eat it. I'm not lying and anyone that says they are good, must have no taste buds. They just cooked the beans , rinsed them and that was it. The bread wasn't anything to write home about either. Had lots of baking soda or baking powder taste. Tried to make the girl smile , but she must hate her job . In fact, I don't think any of the employees in both the stores there were too happy. Plus a few had stupid masks on so you could not tell, but their eyes showed no happiness. Overall , if you want to waste your money on untastey, bland tacos, go for it. read more

When we stopped in we were welcomed by friendly staff and found some beautiful earrings in the behind-glass under-counter display. Also visited the rock shop and loved the raw and polished versions of local semiprecious gemstones. We know that Covid-19' required this store to close for many months, and we were glad to find them open and operating safely with a mask requirement. Lots of visitors while we were there, and the local people were hard hit in the pandemic. Hoping that we'll all feel more confident soon that any new variants are not so dangerous. read more

Typical road trip type of stop. Stopped by here while driving across the country in January 2012 (I'd like to see a review of this place from someone NOT driving on a road trip). Location is good stop for a bathroom/stretch/snack break. Plus you can buy some souvenirs. If you are coming from California, you'll probably still be in the phase of "let's make an adventure" of this road trip and will want to buy some of their wares and buy some fry bread. As opposed to the "let's just get there already/we're not stopping for anything" phase of a road trip. Road tripped it across the country with my dad and sister in August 2009. A few miles before we got to the AZ-NM state line, we stop at a supposed Native American shop to potty. I'm pretty sure it's this place. They claim to be all authentic and junk. However, while browsing my dad finds things made in China. As a result, we immediately dismiss the authenticity of most things. But my sister and I still buy two blankets; just about the only thing real. Cheap, too; $4.99 for one in whatever color pattern you wanted that they have. The blankets are amazingly warm and cozy. They just need to be washed, first. read more

I stopped here on New Years Eve on my way back from Oregon and I absolutely love the native handcrafted items they have. I found the prices to be very good for all of their stuff. I also thought the people there were more than friendly. I talked with the owner and she showed me a picture of her and her mother when the store was just a roadside stand on Route 66. DEAR MILITARY VETERAN'S AND ALL PERSON'S WITH SERVICE ANIMALS...........DO NOT SHOP AT, Chee's Indian Store!!!. While on vacation driving cross country Several weeks ago, (March 2015) I went in with a Service Animal and noticed the ladies behind the counter looking at me with less than welcoming looks. I could also hear them say, I guess he didn't see the sign outside. One of the ladies asked me to leave in a less than pleasant voice because I came in with a dog. I advised her that I am a U.S. Navy Veteran with a Service dog who is properly licensed service dog, I also showed her the Service Animal Placard on my dogs vest. I advised her regarding the ADA and gave her a card explaining the right to enter businesses with Service dogs. She then motioned to the manager to come over and ask me to leave. The manager stated they don't have to adhere to the Americans with Disability Act, because its a Navajo Nation and because of Navajo Culture. I advised him that Indian City next door had no issues with my service dog and gladly took my money with a smile. Therefore, we gave Indian City our business by spending a large sum. As a Navy Veteran, I was disappointed in the staff of Chee's attitudes towards this Veteran after I advised them about ADA, yet they would rather loose my business than accept this Veteran and my service Dog. Veterans and owners of Service animals avoid this location and shop next door at Indian City. They were welcoming, cheerful and helpful. I was the only customer in Chee's at the time, so you think they would have been Happy and interested in helping me find the souvenirs I wanted and gladly take my money! read more

I wanted to rate this higher, but I couldn't bring myself to. My taco was tasteless, no spices or flavor was added, just plain tomatoes, onions, lettuce, beans that were flavorless, and ground beef. The Navajo fried bread, however, was awesome. I decided to throw out my taco and get the bread with cinnamon and sugar, but there was not enough cinnamon and sugar, and it was just not good. Stopped just for the Navajo taco. We were on a trip back to AZ from NM. Do not stop here for the Navajo taco. Unless you like to be treated poorly and love the taste of misery. We both took one bite of our tacos and threw the rest out. Disgusting. Soggy sorry excuse for food. The meat tasted bad. The woman working had no people skills. She didn't even look at me when she took my money. Her face was locked into a look of disgust. The ladies inside the shop at least treated me like a human being when I bought water while I waited. There is a $5.00 minimum purchase to use your card even if you just pay debit. Not a big deal because at least their faces were neutral and not hate filled like the lady in the fry bread stand. I have lived in the area my entire life and I do not believe the previous reviewer has the correct store. Chee's Indian Store does carry some curio items that are made in China but they do not claim to be Native American handmade. All of the jewelry items and other handmade items (pottery, Navajo rugs) are authentic and bought from artists that live in the area. Chee's has a good reputation locally and has been in business for 3 generations. If you are traveling through the area and are looking for an honest place to stop/shop I would highly recommend this store. They also sell Navajo fry bread most days on the week, which is amazing! My friends and I stop at Chee's every year on our way to or from Summer Solstice in New Mexico. I have bought beautiful crystals for amazing prices and a badass t-shirt I wear all the time. Not all the crystals are at amazing bargain prices, but many are priced more than fairly. In addition, the people who work there are nice. I should mention, it is cash only so remember that because that can be a little inconvenient! I've never had the food so I cannot speak to that. I believe that the people who are complaining in their reviews are a part of a conspiracy to keep the awesome secret that is Chee's and though I can't blame them I would be amiss not to let you in on this roadside gem. This is a great stop if you recognize and respect Native American Navaho arts. The jewelry is authentic, the rugs are amazing (with names and pictures of the weavers). Stopped by on a road trip, looked around and saw that they had coffee, poured a cup and noticed there were no sleeves, so I slid on another cup because it was hot. Went up to pay and the woman cashing me out said "just the one coffee, you have two cups, you have to pay for that," so I asked if there were any sleeves, to which she said "no." Normally I wouldn't care, but the woman was so rude and disrespectful that I had to download the Yelp app and create an account just so I could leave this review. Excellent Place to find Hand Made jewelry, sand paintings, pottery!! Even amazing designs of rugs!! I Go here every summer and the people are very nice and the managers become your friend immediatly. They have little toys that of course are not made by hand but they have it especially for my kids to keepsake for the amazing vacation we had! this place has such interesting art and they also have a rock shop whom i overheard had great stones and had regulars shop there to make jewerly. To the guy who reviewed this place 1st was sadly mistaken. Yeah they had a few made in china designs but come on, bet your car is made there too! Besides the great art and hand made jewerly etc makes up for it. If your lucky you might even CATCH a person who makes it themselves and they will tell you how long it takes to make such amazing jewelry and pottery etc by hand. Not so easy let me tell ya.
