Tuesday's codfish fritters at Chef Marlene Vieira Food Corner
    Bruce K.

So many choices in the Time Out Market (aka Mercado da Ribeira)! I had already been to the pizza place on the last visit to Lisbon so I tried something different. The "Tuesday" lunch of codfish fritters with a tomato/beans/rice side looked good and it was. It only took a few minutes. Not at all greasy, quite tasty and surprisingly no bones. I enjoyed my lunch very much! With an apple tart for dessert, it was a great first meal on arriving in this wonderful city for six days! [Review 18993 overall - 191 in Portugal - 2517 of 2022.]

    Crispy pork belly

The Time Out Market can be overwhelming with choices, people and noise. We did a walk around to narrow down the food options and Crispy Pork Belly was my winning choice. Served with roasted potatoes, bacon and onions, it was the star of the show at our table. The port is super tender and layered with just enough fat to be amazingly creamy and soft. Topped with a little crispy blanket of crunchy skin, it was the perfect bite. Not usually a fan of potatoes, it worked well with this dish as it helped soak up all the beautiful gravy and pork juices. Delicious!

Got the duck risotto rice. Was pretty tasty, the Sunday special was pretty flavorful and really big portion.

We were running a little low on remaining sightseeing options, so a trip to TimeOut Market fit the bill. I'm not sure if I've been to a TimeOut before. It's basically a gigantic upscale food court. And it was packed. A little too much so, making it a little hard to walk around and figure out where to eat. Somehow I ended up at Marlene Vieira's and ordered the daily special. Being Sunday, the special was Arroz de pato--Portuguese duck rice. You are given those light up beeper things and despite being the daily special, it didn't come out quickly like a batch was already made up. It took awhile, actually, but we were killing time anyway, and it was worth the wait. Sigh, ALL Portuguese food is wonderful, and this was no exception.

Octopus Salad & Crab Avocado dip

This is one of my must stops when visiting Time Out. A good variety of dishes with daily special entrees which usually sell out early. I've had the Foie Gras Burger, Tempura vegetables & shrimp Croquettes which were excellent. This time I tried the Cod Croquettes & my second visit it was Octopus Salad & the Crab Avocado Salad. Despite the can containers it was served in, both dishes are made fresh (I confirmed) & were very tasty. The people behind the counter are Friendly & service minded & looking forward to the next visit!

Good food, horrible service. Good: We got the Cod over spinach and the stuffed mushrooms, as well as two beers. Food was good, although slightly cold. Bad: As I picked up my tray and walked towards the seating area, I was bumped and one of my beers spilled on the tray and on myself (literally 10ft in front of the restaurant). I immediately went back to the counter and told the lady. She took the glasses and one of the full beers and told me to go ahead and bring my food to the table and come back for the beers, which I did. But when I came back she handed me back my one beer, I asked about the spilled one. She then proceeded to tell me that since I spilled it, I would have to buy another one. What?! I've worked in the food industry for over 15 years, and this is the wrong way to run a business. I've had customers spill drinks, drop food/soup on their way out and I gladly made them a new one, no charge! I mean a beer was only what $1.70 euros? Pretty dumb way to lose a customer over. I told her I would just take my one beer and left. I definitely will not ever come back to the place because of this. Please train your employees of proper customer service.

On my last evening in Lisbon, I decided to order food at Marlene Vieira. I rarely have octopus, but loved it ever since I tried it in the Azores. So while dining at Marlene Vieira, I ordered the grilled octopus. The octopus leg was massive. It comes with fried bits and rests on a bed of potatoes. The fried bits were pretty tasty and quite crispy. The potatoes were soft and flavorful, not mashed but as soft as mashed potatoes. The octopus leg was definitely the star of the show. It was tender on the inside yet crispy on the outside and reminded me of the octopus I had in the Azores. I thoroughly enjoyed the grilled octopus dish and highly recommend it.

Had only one dish but it was great, not a word I use often. I had the duck risotto. It is topped with 2 dainty slices of delicious chorizo and a bit of uncured bacon(I think). The top is broiled to crisp up the rice which adds a nice texture. Under the top layer is a hidden layer of duck. The rice itself is savory and tasty in and of itself. The other dishes looked great too, though didn't get a chance to try them

Nestled in a corner of the Time Out Market, this is worth standing in line for!!! I had a special of the day, grilled octopus on greens with some delicious sprinkly fried thing on top that was AMAZING!!! Fresh and flavorful, quality ingredients. The price wasn't too bad, about $17. The young workers kept the line moving. It was like a very fancy food court, with outstanding food.

Love the tapa deal - 8 tasting dishes for 25euro only! My friend and I had a great time with the food here. Delicious and creative combinations, every bite was fun and flavorful. It's not too much for two people at all!

Pastries de Bacalhau - the crust was not brown enough. May be longer time. The stuffing was flavorful but it's more the cod taste than the flavored mash potatoes which I prefer. I actually prefer the other local restaurant I tried the night before better. Caldo Verde - The potatoe part of the soup is great. Perfect viscosity but the flavor is not. It wasn't salty enough but more importantly is the flavor of the veggies and the spicy sausage they supposed to use that makes the soup taste different. Grilled giant pawns - The flavor of the prawns is not as intense as expected and hope to be. The squid ink pasta also lacked of flavor. That's disappointing. With the prawns, they should at least use the prawn shell to make sauce for the pastas. The pasta was tasteless, didn't even use enough garlic and olive oil to flavor it up. Seafood rice - Another disappointment. They used fish, small mussels and little bit of shrimp pieces along with some bigger whole shrimps and mussels. However, the rice was lack of the true seafood flavor that made from shell fish. They also added cilantro which overwhelmed the whatever left of seafood flavor. The lemonade was not a sweet lemonade but sour. Fyi. It's not fair we just went to another restaurant in the neighborhood and everything was so much better but people should know.

Cozy, almost romantic atmosphere. And just €16 per person for all you can eat! The menu changes nightly so here were the stars for me: Creamed cod. Might not sound appetizing but this was insanely good. Not too fishy. Veggie lasagna - really great flavors and you sneak in some vegetables. All the sides: mashed potatoes were delicious, the rice is a staple, the couscous was perfect, the carrot soup made me say DAMN! The service was amazing. The two gentleman there ran an entire packed restaurant effortlessly. Helping customers with drinks, explaining the concept and each dish to every person that came in. We washed it down with a pitcher of white sangria (drinks and desserts are extra). We literally couldn't move. We walked back to the hotel instead of taking an Uber simply to walk some of it off. The restaurant was quaint and intimate , with a small buffet that easily fills you up. There were many options from a beef stew to a curry, a noodle dish with bacon, salad, and other options. I would definitely recommend this to all in Lisbon.
