I had never heard of succotash. It was described to me as a hearty baked beans. It was really good. The menu is filled with more traditional breakfast options but has a few surprises thrown in like the summery coconut quinoa with fresh mango, pineapple and toasted coconut. The coffee is from the Byron Bay Coffee Club Company and was good. Not great but good. I personally prefer a stronger coffee. We were one of the many people standing outside, waiting for the doors to open at 9am. I recommend making a table reservation if you are planning on coming with a group. The restaurant is much larger than it looks from the street and offers seating in the main dining room or outside in a covered courtyard. We opted not to go alfresco and sat in the dining room. The wait staff were attentive and very happy to answer any questions about the menu candidly and honestly. With a mix of smooth tunes playing on the stereo and families, couples and old friends filling the Cooks Garden restaurant, it caters for all.

I think that this place does all the things necessary to be a good cafe- funky interior, great tasting and interesting food, and not just good coffee- but a rotating bean menu. I had the fresh fig and ricotta on toast which was simply delightful. The combo of figs, ricotta, honey, walnuts and mint was a definite winner. And all the rest of the food I saw looked just as tasty. Brilliant coffee too- I just had the house bean (can't remember what it was) but it was great. To add the cherry on the coffee heaven, the food here is fantastic. Now the menus is limited but both my friend and I were ecstatic about our meals. I got the French toast and it was divine. It is a small kitchen, so if it crowded you might have to wait a bit. But that should be expected with any small cafe. What completely won it for me was the friendliness of the staff. A small error was made in my order (which was my fault) and they lady could not be more helpful. I will definitely come here again.

You know, the kind that normally gets you service like you're a redheaded tramp whose face offends the paying customers. But here! Here, the manager (big, long hair, glasses - a benevolent yeti) clapped his hands, smiled warmly, announced "Excellent!" and proceeded to give us a run down of what the voucher included, what he recommended, brought our free bottle of wine over, laughed merrily when I accidentally knocked him causing him to spill some red on the nice white tablecloth, regaled us with stories of chicken momo dumplings and how they can't use beef because cows are sacred and if you accidentally run into one with your car in Nepal it's 20 years prison so you'd best duck across the border and hide for a few years until the fuss has died down. When the table was ready, we were led to a semi-private dining room (at no extra cost) with gorgeous Indonesian metalworks and wooden decor. I'd give it a 10/10 for ambiance and decor!!!! The food was authentic and delicious. The Gado Gado is probably the best I've had outside of a homecooked version made by a friend's mother. A great place to go for birthday parties and other special occasions where youd like a private/semi private dining area, great decor, great food and great location. The food is also halal so caters for all my friends :)
