Stopped by on a Saturday expecting the catfish pond to be open... but it was closed, which was really disappointing. On top of that, the lady at the entrance booth was pretty rude. She seemed irritated that we were paying with a debit card, and when her card machine was slow, she got frustrated and just let us in for free. We went left behind the booth down a back road which lead to the lake. Very nice area with a small dock. Didn't catch any fish though. Overall, we would still come again. read more

We use to visit Chehaw all the time when I was young. We visited today for the first time in a while a d I was very disappointed in the state of the animal park. The exhibits are overgrown. The walkways are rotting. And they didn't have the train, concessions, or visitors center open. The kids play park area is still nice and they've added a splash pad area but the attraction for me has always been the animals. read more

There are very few attractions in Albany that are worth visiting. Chehaw Park is an exception for those who like tranquility and the outdoors. There is a zoo, biking and if you have kids, a large playground and education center. They even have an RV camping area. The grounds are sprawling and the trails are beautiful. Be sure to bring your best walking shoes and wear sunglasses to keep the gnats out of your eyes. The entrance fee is only $3 per person, slightly more if you want entrance to the zoo. Can't beat that! read more

We have stayed at the campground 4 times. It is excellent. Everything works, it's clean, affordable, quiet, and within easy distance of anything you need. If you are looking for super fancy this is not your place. If you've been camping and RVING for 50+ years you will love it!! read more

Had a great time with family in a cabin for 4 days. Didn't bring much with us so we ended up buying everything when we got to the cabin. I think nobody was really there because it's fall now and kids in school. The zoo was really nice but sure needs some cleaning up and the same with the playground but nobody wants to work anymore we will have to check it out again in the summer read more

Good view of animals! Definitely something to bring the kids to. But make sure to bring something cool, and hydrate during the summer time: You might get over heated from walking so long. read more

A Wonderful way to spend a day. Pretty landscapes and well shaded. The zoo was a fantastic, little, local zoo. The gator exhibit is amazing! The bobcat and bald eagle exhibits are really cool too. We really enjoyed our afternoon there. One little concern: the enclosures are very open. My man (always concerned about my safety) was a bit nervous and anxious about the leopard and bear exhibits. read more

This park and campground is a hidden gem for travelers. They have a ton of recreational things to do and the price is reasonable.

I've lived in Albany, GA for most of my life and this is honestly one of the few gems in Southwest Georgia. Some of my best memories from my childhood are probably from the Native American Festival that I went to for several years or the large playground. I can remember going to see Santa a couple of times and getting pictures. I can remember riding the train through the festival of lights. I've ridden bikes through the trails with my dad. I also had a wedding reception at the park near the lake and attended a military ball at the park. I have several memories here. It's a beautiful place and it changes from year to year. The animals are also a big plus. Chehaw definitely has had a place in my life and it's worth checking it out. Be forewarned, though, that they are not up on the times; they will not accept credit cards or anything last I checked. It is an excellent place to take children! The playground there is amazing. read more

Good place, but the grass wasn't cut and ants where everywhere. Didn't know where was a laundry place. The area was relatively calm, even for an event that was going on. As a native to the area, don't come here during Labor day weekend or 4th of July due to crowds. But other than that, it's amazing. Also, bring citronella candles to repel mosquitos. read more

SPECIFICALLY SPEAKING FOR THE ZOO: Zoos in general are an enslavement of animals that are forced to live in terrible conditions with less than adequate space/food/shelter than they need to survive. The Chehaw Park Zoo amplifies this problem tenfold. Due to the unfortunate natural disasters that have come through Albany, the zoo itself has been become a cluttered mess of fallen trees, overgrown exhibits, and unsafe conditions for attendees. Fragmented bridges have been mended with plywood boards being placed on the walkway. Exhibits have been closed (and not repaired) due to tress that have fallen and haven't been touched since. The habitats are cluttered with the same debris and in accompaniment have little to no grass or space for the animals. The enclosures are horrendous and the conditions of the park are even worse. Instead of closing the park and making the necessary amendments to ensure safety of the park goers and health of the animals, the park is kept open and the problems are merely overlooked. While the park and the facilities of Chehaw may be wonderful, DO NOT come to the zoo. -Michael read more

We were in Albany for the Chehaw Fat Four Mountain Bike Race, so it made perfect sense to stay there. We rented a very inexpensive cabin ($35) for one night and it was ideal. Two sets of bunk beds, one of them had a full size mattress on the bottom bunk and a small table and chairs. There was no bathroom in it, but the cabin was close by to the community bath house. The only reason I am not giving them a 5 star rating is because the stalls on the bathrooms had no latches, so you had to hold the door closed when you went in. Not a big deal, but would so improve the bathroom experience! Something that I was very impressed with, as many people as were using the bathhouse in the morning there was abundent hot water. The park is very clean, quiet and beautiful with well maintained campsites. The mountain bike trail is a recent addition to the Park and is maintained by a local cycling group, South Georgia Cycling. They have built about 7 miles of flowy singletrack that really shows off the diverse landscape of the park. read more

This was the parks inaugural 5k run. i feel bad writing negative criticism for a worthy cause. a portion of the race entry fee goes to help the animals at the zoo (and btw, it is a pretty cool zoo, but that was in a previous review). the run course took us from a picnic area in the park, and runners raced through the zoo, around a grassy field area, then back through the zoo to the finish. the race course was well marked and staffed by volunteers from a local wrestling team. yes, i know it was their first time at this, and there was much organization to be desired. the packet pickup had no signs to let runners know which line to be in. i stood in line for 10 minutes before i asked a race volunteer if i was in the correct line, which i wasn't. so then another line with another wait. and not to toot my own horn, but this was the first "race" i've ever won...in my age category. but they didn't do the automatic ankle/shoe strap things. instead, when you crossed the finish line, they gave you an index card and you wrote your name, age, and finish time on it....talk about honor system. i normally wouldn't hang around for the results, but the trophy for the winners was really cool...a real ostrich egg (drained of course). so i waited the hour and half for the awards. the MC mike didn't work half the time, so the crowd rarely even heard who won what. it was severely aggravating. anyway, they called my name out as second place finisher in 30-35 year olds, and i did protest. first of all, i had already witnessed the 4 runners who beat me get their awards in younger categories. and second, i'm 39!!! they apologized and gave the spiel about it being their first year and they had bugs to work out....but i still wanted my damn egg! alas, i didn't push enough and just left with my lesser than best medal....boo hoo....meanwhile, kids are starving all over the world...yes, i know. anyway, the t-shirts are ok, not the athletic wicking style that is common in runs now, but still fine. anyway, i doubt i'll ever finish first again, so i was a bit mad. maybe they'll get the bugs worked out for next year. read more

I went here with my husband several months ago, back when we lived in Albany. We had a picnic and walked the trails a little bit. It was really nice. Although I'm sure it's much prettier in the spring/summer (everything was kinda dead when we went). But there are lots of fun things to do here. This would be a great place to take kids. There is an educational center, a zoo and a really cool looking playground. Check it out. read more

It costs $2.00 to get in the park except on the fifth Sunday of the month, you can enter for free. I absolutely love Chehaw Park. The area is beautiful the park offers a huge pavilion for large parties and outdoor covered picnic areas you can use for family get togethers and such. The indoor pavilion requires a contract and a deposit but if I remember right the outdoor covered areas are first come first serve. They do have grills placed throughout the park you can use. And large open areas to just enjoy. They have a large play park for children 2-99 and a BMX bike track that your little ones can ride on and have fun. The park offers a boat ramp so you can launch your boat and do some fishing. They have primitive camping sites as well as RV sites you can utilize. The park has a separate Zoo area which is wonderful. It does cost a mimminal fee for the Zoo. And they have a train you can ride on for an additional fee. When you go see the animals be prepared to do a lot of walking. If you have young children I suggest a stroller or a wagon because you both will enjoy the park more. You can spend several hours looking at the many animals they have for your enjoyment. You will love chehaw park ps. They often have different community events to enjoy,Spooktacular for Halloween, Christmas lights display, marathon events, and a really great American Indian festival that is fun for the entire family. read more

Chehaw has always been somewhere me and my family have visited over the years. Despite the hot temperatures of SWGA it's a fun place to go to during the summertime. The zoo is filled with many exotic species you wouldn't see otherwise, and it's always interesting learning about different animals there as well. When I was younger, I used to visit the play park with my family often, and I've seen that it's still loved by many. read more

Nice relaxing animal park to visit. Decent variety of animals to observe. Wasn't too crowded on a Sunday. On a side note, needs to be training conducted on how to read military and veterans ID cards. The lady at the front gate hasn't been properly trained on how to look for the Veterans markings for a Georgia drivers license. We argued the point for a couple minutes and it says veteran in red writing at the bottom of my drivers license. Please conduct training so that future veterans won't have to endure this when they visit. read more

Had a pretty good time with my wife here. Nice picnic, not too many people. Wish we went here a few more times, as they look like they have plenty of disc golf holes, but wasn't the most amazing thing ever. Definitely worth a visit if you live in Albany, though! read more

Chehaw is a really great place to visit! I was so happy to hear that they will be opening up an equine riding trail!! This is so wonderful! I also LOVE their Christmas lights and bike night. Spent most of yesterday afternoon enjoying the non stop fun provided once again by Chehaw Park. It was a small way of revisiting my childhood and creating memorable times for my own children...AMAZING family memories made here in this park for well over 30 years. I visited my home state last week July 13th the park brought back so many childhood memories. The only thing is that the zoo looked a mess. I am not sure if it's even safe to be out there. So many lifted trees from the disaster. It's not worth the money that I paid. I was very disappointed with the zoo. But, I hope their are future plans to remodel the zoo. read more

One star because zero is not an option on this site. We were extremely disappointed in the campground. The grass had likely not been cut all summer. It was knee high and poison ivy covered our electrical post and could be found in many areas of the campground. The restrooms/bath house was filthy; soap bars were left on the floor and bugs were in the showers. There was only one washer and dryer; both were so nasty looking we opted to pass on doing our laundry while we were there. Many of the attractions in the park are closed during the week, which is disappointing since it is the middle of the summer. We are full time RVers and have been to many campgrounds over the past year and this one was by far the worse one we have been to. We will never return to this one! read more

This is a beautiful park with a nice entrance, varied activities, and interesting things to see BUT the rv park is NOT worth the stay. The rv park is apparently the only area that has not had any thought, effort, or money invested. The sites are all on a slant and most on a double slant. If you are tenting, you may find a flat area but if you are in an rv without levelers, prepare to move your rv and move your rv and move your rv and you still will NOT find a level spot. You can S.L.I.D.E into bed or roll out of it or get a nosebleed because your head is lower than your feet. Sites are close together, which is ridiculous because they have lots of space. Nothing special to mention about the rv park because...it's nothing special. Unlevel sites and potholes. A bumpy dirt road into and around the rv park. No concrete pads, no landscaping, no pavement, blah blah blah. It's really blah. And let me add this delightful tidbit. Expecting nature? Birds chirping? Wind rustling? Forget it. They had the 'foresight' to place sleeping people right smack beside the highway. Could have put the bmx track by the highway but, nope. Tenters get to hear traffic ALL NIGHT LONG. read more
