Point is, while the name is 'Spice Merchant', there is much, much more inside and forgive yourself for getting lost or distracted. And then there's the star of the show, at least for me: the artisanal coffee. Their selection is simply sine qua non. Whether you want light roast or dark, or in between, flavored bean or just roasts, beans whole or ground, Spice Merchant has you covered. I am an absolute devotee to their French roast, the Old San Francisco blend. I get a pound, ground, and I treat myself about once a week with this gift from the coffee gods. Dark and a bit smoky and it accentuates all the best notes from the bean. Maybe coffee isn't your cup of, well, tea. You're in luck if you're more with the leaf, because their loose leaf tea selection is unparalleled locally. If you prefer bagged teas and less mess, their boxed tea inventory seems endless. All of this is in its own separate nook, away from the powerful coffee aroma and focused more on the peace that is tea. It's easy to get crowded amongst the aisles, but that's only because there is so much to choose from. Hot sauces, dip mixes, or other condiments are all over. Spice Merchant draws in local suppliers (hello, local honey) and small vendors from outside the area, so you're really shopping brick and mortar here. The cinnamon rolls are the best we have ever had. They are also different variations of cinnamon rolls such as pumpkin rolls that are tasty too. We also ordered biscuits and gravy, and pancakes. My husband was reluctant to try the homestyle syrup, but you cannot go back to maple syrup after having their homestyle. The biscuits were fluffy and buttery, and the gravy was rich and had plenty of breakfast sausage to give it some bite. We have made the trip to Durham three more times since our first visit. If anybody is in the Wichita or Topeka area, and isn't afraid of a little road trip, go to the Main Street Cafe in Durham, KS!

I looked for local coffee shops and noticed that Craft has matcha, so off I went downtown! The atmosphere is really nice, though I felt like I was making a lot of squeaky noises as I walked inside. There were also tables outside and it was cool enough in the morning to sit, but there were several groups there so I stayed inside. I ordered a 16 oz iced matcha latte with almond milk and chatted with the cashier about it being my first day in McPherson. She was very friendly. I sat down at a table and watched the Tour de France on my phone while enjoying my matcha, watching many people come and go, happily enjoying their beverages. This is a very nice find in town!

I cannot remember the name of the drink I ordered, but I know it had salted caramel, cinnamon and pumpkin. It was not your average pumpkin spice latte. It was a step above! The flavors, the aroma, everything about this coffee made my day. I also ordered the ooey gooey pumpkin butter bar. If you think about the size of a regular dessert bar versus this, not only was this about the size of two you might normally get elsewhere, but the quality and the taste let you know this thing was homemade and made with love. I'm not afraid to make longer road trips for great places, especially when it comes to coffee or food. I will definitely be back to try more and to visit the inside which looks adorable. They make drinks that are familiar to fans of Starbucks but they are not a franchisee. The food served at 1887 Café is made by the Bethel College food service, which is run by Aladdin if I'm not mistaken. They do serve different items that can be eaten with coffee for breakfast as well as salads and sandwiches that can be eaten for lunch. Many of the staff that are serving customers are actually college students at Bethel College. They have both indoor and outside patio seating

They're bakery case is great, I do miss the biscuits and gravy, but their current offerings are very good with a selection of morning buns, breakfast burritos, muffins and such. They're currently managed by Reverie Roasters out of Wichita so the menu shook up a little bit but the coffee is still great, just a few of the menu items have changed or been replaced. It's located on the Bethel Campus and has a small patio with 3-4 tables and 8-10 inside. Just a really nice little campus and community coffee place!
