I was an impoverished student in Paddington for about a year and I learnt a lot about being thrifty in this time. Imbedded into my routine was procuring my many beauty products from Paddington Central Pharmacy. I don't think this pharmacy actually advertises itself as a "discount" pharmacy but there is still many savings to be had! Namely on basic things like shampoo, conditions and toothpaste! On a good day one would be able to purchase a large amount of toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner for around $10. This would generally last me about a month. Not a bad deal to stay clean and reasonably attractive for approximately $10 a month! I also went through a health kick and picked up some relatively cheap vitamins but they didn't send me into a bargain bonanza! So in short, this review is for all those poor students out there who need a cheap solution to staying clean!

Every time I go to Paddington Woolworths, I will stop by this pharmacy to nab myself some cheap household and bathroom necessities. Aprart from that the bargains, Paddington Central Pharmacy is a good place to pick up your prescriptions and general medical products. They have a small range in make-up too, so if you are in dire need of mascara- it's good for that too. Overall, not a bad pharmacy at all. Next time you are in need of shampoo or toothepaste, don't buy it from Woolworths, buy it from Paddington Central Pharmacy.

For instance, just the other day I ran out of my prescription medication and couldn't get into the medical centre. My regular pharmacy was able to contact my doctor, organise all the paperwork and provide an emergency supply over the weekend. Healthy World Pharmacy in Mount Gravatt is my pharmacy of choice for its friendly staff, convenience AND huge range of cosmetics. I'm not kidding. They have a huge range of cheap cosmetics. I remember their original pharmacy in Stones Corner use to be known as make-up and perfume specialists. Well, they've brought the same range to their Mt Gravatt shop. It's great browsing through their discounted Loreal, Maybelline and Elizabeht Arden lines while waiting for my prescription. For those more into their health than make-up, Healthyworld also offer a full time naturopath and specialise in sports/ body building and nutritional supplements. Their downstairs location is directly next to a bulk billing medical centre with both male and female doctors. So for those people living in the Mt Gravatt area, taking care of your health is now quick, affordable and convenient.

It's a fairly small hardware store, so I shouldn't have been surprised to find they only had three compost bins in stock, but I was disappointed with the lack of range and also the lack of interest displayed by the salesperson. The compost bins didn't have prices on them and the salesperson could only give prices "off the top of his head", which didn't really make me want to buy from there. I also went to look at some small flowering plants inside, but didn't find anything of interest and found it a bit expensive. I went there just for the nursery side of things, so can't comment on the hardware section of the store, but would recommend going elsewhere for plants and gardening needs.

Once we decided, we booked in a time for delivery and the guys showed up on time - bonus! - however, there was a slight problem ...they delivered the wrong rocks!! We called them back once we realised and while they couldn't rectify it immediately as it was a busy Sunday (and their supplier was closed), it was pretty close! Craig (CJ) came back at the end of the day to have a chat, understand the issue and agree a way forward. He arrived bright and early Monday to remove the incorrect rocks (without us even hearing him!) and returned as agreed to re-lay the correct blue stone. He was extremely apologetic, did this all on his own time, and did it all with a smile on his face. Yes, it would have been terrific if this hadn't happened in the first place, however, we all know things can go wrong! The thing we liked the most was the great customer service we received from CJ as soon as he found out we hadn't received what we were supposed to! Right from that point he was only focused on rectifying the situation and ensuring we were satisfied customers. For that, we'd like to say Thank You!

It really does feel like a bargain shop more than the clean, sparse chemist shops you find these days. But you know what? They're open until 11pm, perfect for when you need a late night prescription filled so you can get to sleep.

For these reasons I often find that even if I'm not looking to buy anything I can't stay away from these shops. I was near Garden City in Mt Gravatt when I wondered across the road to the Overflow which had a whole bunch of storage containers outside for fewer than 20 dollars. I had to go and check it out so I walked in and was amazed at the sheer size of the place. It looked more like a ware house than a shop. This sadly was great news for me and I must have spent the next 30 min looking at everything from picture frames to tools to kitchen ware. This however hardly made a dent. I am definitely heading back there because its perfect for party supplies, storage solutions and more importantly silly gifts. I would recommend that people who love a deal go and check it out.

Before they became a chain chemist it was much more personal but i guess that happens with corporatisation. Still they do have good selection of products and the pharmacists are very knowledgeable. Average experience. Certainly better than the discount chains but i miss the friendly corner sole operated chemist. It seems the world is heading to chain shops with very few small operators left. This one is not especially welcoming from the outside and they don't have anything of great excitement on their shelves, but it's a chemist and they've got heaps of stuff so it's certainly a useful one.
