1890's DAYS JAMBOREE, (Ringgold, GA)…read more I am a self-confessed "festival freak" and I always like to attend the small town ones during the holidays and on weekends. When it comes to small towns, the activities are always family friendly and I have never encountered public drunkenness, coarse/foul language, unreasonable lines, lewd behavior or a shortage of food. For the well planned festival, I always have a very good time and we always encounter the nicest people who are always up for a friendly chat. Festivals have something for everyone: food, music, dancing, a play area for the kids, classic cars and of course an array of vendors. I like the festivals that are north of Alpharetta and at least an hour away because the drives are always peaceful and beautiful. After planning my weekend activities, I needed an activity for Saturday and this one fit the bill. We have actually visited the town of Ringgold but only explored its history and Civil War connection. I was excited to go back, to visit the local merchants and attend their annual festival now in its 40th year. I enjoy being able to actively join in the fun, singing along dancing and making merriment. Yes, I love to whoop it up. If you are lucky, you will also get to attend a parade as we did today. This was a small town parade that featured little kids riding their tractors or little convertibles, and hustling candy on the side. I loved this parade because we were not required to be positioned on the sidewalks and could actually reach out and touch parade participants if we wanted to. This made the experience more personal and I really enjoyed being able to say thank you directly to the vets who participated in the parade. Even though Ringgold is a small town, residents and sponsors did a great job of organizing this festival because they had several stages featuring different performances such as just music, dance and contests. Even the outdoor stages had chairs provided. You had a nice choice and one of the venues was in the historical depot where you could actually cool off. The town is small enough that you could park at one end and easily walk to each venue. They were even smart enough to place the business/service vendors on a side street so it kept things all about the festival and did not disrupt the flow of energy. The people attending and working the festival were super friendly and I love just chatting up the vendors and those showing their classic cars. One of my favorites was Rodney S. who had purchased a '55 Chevy wagon and restored it with his brother, (over three winters, because he has to bale hay in the summer). I was just amazed at the quality of work that went into this vehicle both under the hood, and in the interior. Neither of them have professional skills in restoration and they did not use a professional garage to complete the work. All of the work, (stripping, fabricating and painting), was done in the brother's garage. What a beauty! Please check out the photos of the yellow wagon. The classic cars were all just beautiful and I especially love the trucks and tractors. The lady saw me really admiring the classic tractor up for raffle and asked me if I wanted to take a photo. Before she could even finish, I had climbed into the seat of that tractor (dress and all), and directed my husband to take various shots. It was awesome! There were several food vendors and I appreciated seeing unique choices such as gator on a stick and healthy options like the grilled chicken on a stick. Unfortunately, we did not get to sample any of the food because we had eaten a solid breakfast and decided that we wanted to sit down in a cool restaurant for lunch. I would definitely recommend this festival for good clean, family fun and just for anyone who enjoys a nice relaxing time, with great music and good people. There is still time to enjoy this festival because it goes on until 10 pm tonight.

Went here in the afternoon with my husband and kids (age 7&8). We did the guided tour and it was…read morewonderful! The inside museum is self guided. We took probably 20-30 minutes inside, then hopped on a golf cart for the guided part of the tour. It ended up taking about an hour to an hour and a half. Our guide was so knowledgeable and made learning fun (per my kids!). If you want to learn a little history in a relaxed and engaging environment, you should stop in here! Keep in mind that most of the tour/museum is outside, so if you don't want to get wet or be too cold or too hot, plan your visit with the weather in mind.

But once we boarded the golf cart on the guided tour with Jody, that all changed. The weather was great, which always helps but the knowledge Jody shared at each stop took us back in history. As a teacher, I appreciated each detail and he (Jody) was always ready to answer questions. The property around the museum is where all of the history took place and Tunnel Hill takes great pride in their local treasure. I was surprised to learn all the seemingly small place had to offer. Kudos to all the people who work hard to keep this place alive. My kids and I had a great visit! I will note that it is more for middle school and up. And it's good for the kids to already have some knowledge about the Civil War. I only rate it one star less than perfect because the displays and mannequins need quite a bit of updating. You do have to have a good guide!

Little, did I know that I was gonna get a surprise for my birthday... a free coffee complete with the swirly straw. Never seen or even touch an alpaca. They are so soft. Loved their home-made trinkets in their general store...stop by, put a pin on the map. Im the only one from Tucson!!!!!

I had just finished an extremely long and hot hike to Edward's Point so they were patient while I asked about everything and made a custom iced coffee and soda and purchased some other goodies from inside the shop. They assured me that, although the coffee shop closed at two, I was welcome to walk up to the barn where the alpacas were in the shade and there were more tables and I could sit and enjoy my drinks and feed them for as long as I wanted. I spoke to a friendly gentleman up there for a few minutes who was cleaning up and then sat for a half hour and enjoyed some alpaca therapy. They've very cute and friendly. Excellent little stop and my drinks and muffin were delicious. Prices were very fair.

The main property is posted as PRIVATE because someone actually lives in the home as a private residence. History of the site: Visitors to our area will soon discover new signs identifying the Andrew Ross Home, along with the Willstown Mission Cemetery and old Fort Payne Cabin site, as official components of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. The congressionally designated trail commemorates the tragic history of the 1838 removal of the Cherokee people from their ancestral homelands to territory in the west. Located just off the intersection of 45th Street and Godfrey Avenue NE, the Andrew Ross home is privately owned by Dr. Stephen Brewer. The present structure retains intact portions of the original home built in 1821 by Cherokee leader Andrew Ross and his wife, Susannah (Susan) Lowery Ross, who was the daughter of Assistant Principal Chief George Lowery. Long thought to be the home of Daniel Ross, Andrew's father, recent research has revealed the home's true origins. In addition to the home, which had an impressive second story balcony across the front, the property included stables, numerous outbuildings, farmlands, orchards and pastures A brother of Cherokee Principal Chief John Ross, Andrew was a judge on the Cherokee Supreme Court. As a member of the Ridge Party -- the group who lobbied to cede all Cherokee lands east of the Mississippi and voluntarily emigrate to the Western territory, Andrew was in direct opposition to his brother John's anti-removal stance. The other two certified properties are owned by Landmarks of DeKalb County. They are Willstown Mission Cemetery located off Godfrey Avenue on 38th Street NE, which is open to the public, and the old Fort Payne Cabin site, located at the end of 4th Street SE, which is undergoing continued research and development -- access to the Cabin Site is by appointment only. So if you're expecting a nice Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon you won't find it here however, if you like sweet (Welche's grape juice) this is the place for you. Don't get me wrong. Some of the wines I tasted would do very well on a California dining table. But this is no Napa so don't expect it to be. However, it's a very nice venue with." pick your own grapes", lots of fun food oriented, souvenirs and delicious pizza, I highly recommend the pizza! The winery was inviting and clean with so many options for gifts and treats to take home. We really enjoyed the different flavors and of course had to take some bottles to enjoy later.
