Once a month my husband and I trek to the Cherry Auction Swap Meet. He buys gloves for work, I look around at clothes and makeup, and then we head to the produce area. Lately we have been perusing the swap meet (used) area looking for DVD's and items I can use for DIY projects. On this day I found a small metal candle holder I am planning to spray paint black and put a black candle and some fake cob webs on. I'm not going to pay $15.99 at Target for that! There is always music and usually a live band as there was on this day. The smell of churros and a bell ringing to call you to the agua frescas is part of the experience. If you like shopping at the Dollar Tree you will love the Cherry Auction. If you want to find someone selling hemp and other items made from marijuana plants, this is your place as well. Need bedroom furniture or a humongous cooking skillet for your next get together...this is definitely your place. As we headed out I stopped to price and receive information about homemade pinatas. Yes, this is a flea market, and yes, I get just as excited to go here, as Flemings. So here is how our Saturday morning at the Cherry Auction will arise: 7:15 Baby comes in our room and wakes us up. 7:17 Put her in our bed 7:17-7:30 My lil girl begins poking our eyes out, slapping our back and pulling our hair. This is how she says, "Good Morning!" 7:30 Hubby looks over at me. "Well, do you want to go to the Cherry Auction?" Me: "I'll be ready in 5 minutes, I don't need to take a shower!!" 7:33 I'm ready to go 7:54 We arrive!!!!!! It's far away in Fresno. It's on Cherry and Jensen.... I think. It's in the middle of nowhere. I don't know. 8:00 We pay for parking (2 bucks) across the street. We start off at the Taco truck in the back corner. 8:07 Hubby: "What do you want to get?" Me: "ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......................... I think I'll get 2 carne asada tacos and 1 carnitas. Or do you think I should get the torta? Ohhh!! Did you see that guys menudo? From automotive parts to fresh produce, you could find at least one thing you want/need. There are plenty of good deals here, you just need to walk around and bargain a little. If you're looking for "high quality" items, sorry, but this place isn't for you then. Riverpark is calling your name. Third, this is a flea market, not Restorante de Pretendingtobefinedining. Chinese and/or Mexican food from food trucks is the shit. You'll find oily, greasy, thigh-expanding, ass enlarging good food here. Bacon wrapped hot dogs, sweet breads, fried goodies, and sugar filled drinks are common. No offense to those who watch their weight much more closely than others, but this is the wrong place to be counting calories. Fourth, this is a flea market, not a Whole Foods or Vons. Yeah, there are flies circling the fruits and veggies section -- and the produce may still have soil stuck on them. Does that make them less of a fruit or a vegetable? No. This is as fresh as you can get (unless you actually go out in the field and pick your own produce). The Cherry Ave. Auction is a farmers market/auto hobby shop/marketplace/food court/dance hall/car dealership/farm/outdoor club/real life E-Harmony...everything. They're open Saturday and Tuesday; entrance fee is $3 on Saturday and $2 on Tuesday (don't quote me on the price). Get here early (around 8AM) if you don't like shopping during crowded hours; it helps you with parking as well. If you know Spanish, that helps. If you can speak Hmong, that would be helpful for a few of the vendors, too. If you only speak English, shit...I don't know, point at what you want and smile. As farmers markets go, this is the largest in the area. Per it's namesake, we come looking for cherries and other fruit. We got there at about 8am, thinking we could get in and out with out much of a crowd to compete with. The majority of vendors were barely setting up tables. So we needed to bide time for them to set up. We did so at a centrally located taco truck and ate breakfast. After eating, we went through the booths looking for the best fruit. While each vendor was independent of the next, the pricing points were about the same on every item. So we selected our cherries based on the condition of the fruit. We selected some peaches based on their size. The fruit was ripe and delicious. A word of caution, having a little Spanish language helps with some vendors. Ripe fruit will not keep very long. Don't go before 9 AM. read more

They will get dirty. I learned the hard way my linen pants are now super mucky and stained. Lots of vendors so if you spot something you like don't purchase right away walk around to search for the same item for maybe a cheaper price! New and used clothes, shoes, vegetables, fruits, food vendors, to animals. I'm pretty sue you can find anything! And if you can't I'm sure you're not looking hard enough. Your children will see every knockoff of toys ever made. The latest thing is the 'clackers' that us 40 year olds used to play with. Count me in. - Variety of delicious mexican food. Fresh and hot churros, a million taco stands, Concha stands (my favorite), original Elote, and not to mention the snow cones with flavors you've never even heard of. - Lots of random stands selling random things. Look hard and you could find amazing deals on some really good name brand things. I can't count how many times I've found Pampered Chef cookware, genuine art, cute secondhand clothing, and a bunch of odds and ends for your house. NOT SO GOOD - If you don't speak that much Spanish, it's good to come with someone who does. A lot of these vendors don't speak much english or if they do it's broken english. - Bathrooms. Yuuuuck. I'm pretty good about holding my bladder when it comes to public restrooms, but now that I'm pregnant I'm beginning to worry that holding it isn't going to be an option for me anymore. Crowded, smelly, overpacked, grimy and just plain gross. BRING YOUR HAND SANITIZER! - Try not to bring a giant purse along. It'll only get in the way if you plan on carrying loads of bags around. The fond memories of yesteryear are what continually bring me back......... the charm that made this place one of the most entertaining cheap Saturday morning ventures has indeed faded. With time and policy changes many of the cool amenities have eroded into obscurity. First the auction, long gone. No more truckloads of junk to be bought with five dollars in sight (I'm showing my age here). No fish guy selling live catfish out of the back of his old Datsun pickup. No livestock AT ALL anymore sadly. I can't tell you how many turkeys, goats, guinea pigs, birds I have Bought over the years here. It's just another Fleamarket. I really don't like it here after my horrible experience. I gave a curlyheaded Mexican lady which looked mean btw...20 bucks for some shirts I bought. As I walked away...she accused me of not paying so she grabbed my bag back. I was super furious!!! Not only was I scammed 20 bucks with no shirts...I was embarrassed of how she made me look like a thief. So I pretty much gave a big scene and grabbed the clothes on the table and threw it all on the ground n told her your items are crap and try to sell that! This place is not that bad to go and maybe buy some good fruits and vegetables,but the fact that they allow unethical vendors to sell hundreds of animals kept in unclean and overcrowded conditions is unacceptable and looks very bad on the Cherry Auction Management. The guys who sell these animals treat them very cruelly without the slightest morality and many of them are stuffed into tiny cages in which they can't even move and half of them have a sickness and receive no veterinary care rather are thrown in the trash like disposable merchandise. I don't support this cruelty and you should consider doing the same until the Cherry Auction stands against animal abuse and ends the sale of animals immediately. read more

Don't go here! Swap Meets used to be great places to go for bargain shopping and great farmers market produce. I went just recently to the Cherry Auction and the Pokemon cards we purchased were fake and cheap looking. The jeans, that were over priced, fell apart. The "hen" that we bought turned out to be a rooster, even though we paid more for it because they told us it was a hen. And! The corn on the cob had caterpillars it them!! Each of these were separate vendors and booths, so they take advantage of you here!! read more

Be careful. Some of these vendors are snakes in the grass. Take a bunch of $1 bills and pay the exact price. I bought something for 6 bucks, gave a $20 and waited for change. I was given change as if I had given her a $10 bill. So she was trying to pocket $10 for her self (must have been a pocho tax). It took about 5 minutes to get this female to come clean and give me the right change. Now, when I do go because I'm looking for a deal. I will only pay the negotiated price. I do not rely on their integrity because a few have none which ruins it for all. Plus parking is somewhere between $1-$5. :( On the plus side, the fruit is pretty exotic and wish I had the nerve to brave the crowd to go get some. I stopped going to this place years ago.
