I had a fantastic experience at this nursery! Their selection is truly impressive, featuring a massive collection of vibrant perennials and annuals that were all in peak health. Beyond the flowers, they have a great variety of fruit trees and unique landscape plants that you don't see at the big-box stores. I recently purchased a multi trunk, fruitless olive tree and had considerable help with the staff. I was given a very good Price as I paid cash for the tree and saved them the 3% on a credit card. We bought three five-gallon and three one-gallon milkweed plants ($142.68) from Cherry Lane Nursery to feed 80 hungry Monarch caterpillars that were just about to cacoon. Unfortunately, we did not know they were sprayed with insecticide and all of the caterpillars died from eating the plants. When we noticed some white residue on the plants before buying them, we asked one of the workers what it was and he assured us that it was just water. We have bought numerous milkweed plants from other nurseries and never experienced this before. The owners of other nurseries know that clients purchase milkweed to feed Monarch caterpillars. We are extremely disappointed and will never shop at Cherry Lane Nursery again. If you fear poisonous insecticide, you should not either. read more

A tale of Succulents to Invasive Species! While my experience with stand-alone Nurseries is generally limited as opposed to "hybrid" places that combine Hardware &/or Farm Supplies shops [or even Big Box stores like HD], this cute place is one of my favorite places to stop once in a while. The owner and workers are friendly and knowledgeable. The owner even provided a cautionary tale of his ongoing issues with a certain invasive bedding plant that seems to be everywhere on the grounds. In any case, whenever I am on the hunt for more succulents to add to my collection or even for advice on them, the owner here is super-nice. While I somehow always overthink succulent care, he is one of the few people who know how to set me straight with practical advice. The proof is that he practices what he preaches: to take small pieces of some succulents and throw them into the space in another potted plant. While not a sure thing, it seems to work well for him at least. Using some of that advice, some of the cuttings I have tried to root over time have finally developed roots and even flowered over months, not weeks. It sometimes seems like "magic". If there is one sure Kryptonite for most succulents is over-watering or even excess moisture. Cuttings, pups, and leaves need to be left to callous over before watering. Fungus growth can be an issue, or even kill anything placed in the soil right away...with a few exceptions [like some elongated Echeveria fallen stems that we directly placed into the ground]. Succulents are just a weird bunch of plants that are extremely diverse. Many actually came from South Africa and many of the coast plants that one sees on the Central Coast Beaches and along the 101 are actually invasive Ice Plants...which are succulents as well. While you rarely may or may not get a hefty fine for picking a California Poppy growing like a weed in some parks, picking an invasive Ice Plant is typically not such a big deal. Ironically, even though there are projects to remove invasive species from beaches or coastal areas, Ice Plants are still sold in plant stores. Of course, some plants can & will invade one's garden, and even at Cherry Lane, they have a problem with another invasive bedding plant as well...which grows all over the place. As far as IcePlants go the reason that they were introduced in California in the first place was to help stabilize the vast tracks of railroad area soil with the plants. Unfortunately, they did little to help and then went on to invade most California Beaches, most Coastal areas, along vast areas of 101 freeway and the exits and entrances, and even many nature preserves at least along the CA Central Coast. They can become quite dense in some areas and some varieties are even edible thus one can see rabbits populate some coastal succulent-filled areas. Speaking of edible invasive plants one can find in California, quite oddly from a former NYer perspective is seeing common Fennel growing wild. Please try not to pick it since one rare butterfly needs them. I had to return a beautiful one-month old plant that cost $170 ($135, after standard discount) because it died for no reason. (It was supposed to tolerate wind but apparently did not.) They had several others, but nowhere near as nice or as large. He said I would get a significant discount given that the first one had died, but then rang it up as $170 (I question this), minus a 15% discount, even though I had the 20% coupon. He upped the discount to 20% when I complained, but I really would have expected better given that the first plant simply died, and with their high prices to begin with. read more

What a find!! Visiting family in Arroyo Grande, we made a trip to find a few specific plants. This is a gem of a place, and truly it's a beautiful set up. It's well worth a visit as the people are very friendly and helpful. Our lady knew right where everything was and pointed out the easiest way to navigate the narrow walkways (for a cane user) and find what we came to get. She introduced us to Mexican Sage and we walked out with a few of those as butterfly plants. She also found a pink one hidden somewhere in the milieu of plants to add it the purples we had our eyes on. All their plants are in good condition and well cared for. The planters are covered in mosses and ground covers making for an intensely beautiful display. read more

I begin by saying that I like this nursery. Their employees are knowledgeable and it is close by. Normally, I would give them a higher rating. This business doesn't seem to care about the safety of it's customers! I am willing to pay the higher prices to support local merchants but not at the risk of my safety. Since the onset of the Covid 19 pandemic, it has been enter the nursery at your own risk! I have repeatedly had to navigate around staff and customers who were not wearing masks. The non-mask wearing staff would not stay 6 feet away or make it easy to safely pass by them. On one visit, I encountered an employee wearing a mask and social distancing. When I inquired into their safety policy, I was told it's the businesses choice not to require masks. Is it also their choice not to require social distancing, hand washing or any other safety practice? What is the priority here? I hope Cherry Land will change their policy in the future! read more

One day when I was standing at the blackboard, I looked out to see a row of crows sitting on a branch of the tree outside my door, staring at me, following my every move. Then I noticed the hypnotically swaying black foam crow on a wire that I had received at a reading conference bobbing up and down over my head. The crows stared in fascination, and from then on, in addition to my students, I had a murder of crows watching me. This went on for a couple of months, then without warning, lightning struck! Not intellectual lightning, but real lightning hit the tree behind my classroom and split it apart. The crows moved to the tree next door, but I missed my bird buddies, who also talked to me and followed me around school. My friends saw a NOVA on crows and told me to watch. Sure enough, crows can recognize their friends and their enemies. I could see they were uncomfortable jockeying for space in their new tree home. Inspiration struck, and I ventured to Cherry Lane Nursery, where the school had first gotten the tree. They were happy to provide me with a fine specimen to plant for about $90. My husband and I formed a planting committee of two, and dug a pit and stood it up with its supports. Not only has the tree blossomed, but a new generation of crows is happily habitating in its branches. Cherry Lane has beautiful trees. When my husband needed trees for a Memorial Site to honor firefighters killed in the Spanish Ranch fire in Cuyama, he was able to get a good deal on four proud oak trees that are now planted at the memorial site in Cuyama. When you want a tree that will really live up to its potential and reaches for the sky, this is the place to go. read more

Not a safe place. Even though their merchandise and plants are overly expensive they do carry good quality plants and some that are not carried at other nurseries, which is nice. Their staff does not wear masks and gets much too close, not sure why. If I feel the need to go there I get in and out as fast as I can and sanitize immediately. read more

My mom and I were so excited to visit this place today. She noticed it while driving one day on her way to my house. At first it was lovely, the staff were kind and friendly, offering to lift anything heavy that we wanted carried for us. They were knowledgeable and gave great suggestions which I will take with me when I'm plant shopping in the future. So, thank you to them:) Unfortunately we ended up having one of the worst experiences due to a woman who works there. It's too bad I didn't catch her name, but she had wavy, grey shoulder-length hair and she wasn't wearing a mask. She might have even been an owner, I'm not sure. She was crass and rude, openly snapping at the other employees that were there, ordering them around and demanding they do things for her in front of customers like they were incompetent and lazy even though clearly they were not. It was extremely uncomfortable. I could feel her making other customers uncomfortable. Even my cart ended up being dramatically "in her way" and I felt so completely unwelcome. (Side note - as beautiful a nursery as it is, the walk ways are super narrow, so there's really no room for carts anyhow, unless maybe you're the only person there I guess?). I decided on putting back everything I had intended to buy including a plant I fell in love with that would have ran me $170 in itself, which I was initially torn about buying because I've always wanted one like it but she was the concrete factor in deciding to look elsewhere.. I just did not feel in any way comfortable giving this woman my money or even interacting with her, so I chose to avoid it. She also nearly destroyed one of the plants my mother bought even after she was pushy and abrasive with her at checkout, which I did not like one bit. On the way out another customer who she had just finished helping was concerned about why she laid his plant down on it's side in his truck and she responded by loudly saying "it's fine it won't roll!" And then walked away, basically dismissing him. She did the same thing with my mother's plants even though my mom asked her not to and it caused the soil to spill out and one of the two blooms to break off :( it was sad to us, considering they were the reason she even picked that plant. Luckily we know more should grow. I get that new plant owners might not understand why you laid their plant down on it's side when you loaded it up and to you that may seem stupid, but the least you can do is (kindly) explain why you did it that way, am I right?? Where is simple KINDNESS anymore!?!? I'm so sad, this was my first visit to this nursery and as beautiful as it is and as excited as we were, the taste left in my mouth by this woman is obviously completely sour. I cannot see returning. And I really hope the other workers are being treated well. Everyone else was really nice! They certainly didn't deserve her bullshit. read more
