This review is for Radiation Oncology at VOA…read more My first appointment here was with the amazing Dr. Heather Jones. She spent so much time explaining everything in great detail. My treatment began quickly and the entire radiation team was wonderful for the duration of my visits. The facility is clean, comfortable and they run the treatments as timely as possible.

They have since moved to the new Brock Cancer Center on Virginia Beach Boulevard, the 2nd of the two newest additions to the Sentara Leigh campus. The location is on the south side of Virginia Beach Boulevard just west of its intersection with Kempsville Road. The entire staff was caring & nurturing. The nurses in the infusion room became familiar with their regular patients. Volunteers from a local organization brought around a cart with lunch boxes & soft drinks for both patients & the family member who was caring for them. Periodically a comfort dog would be brought around for those of us who found this soothing. No one provided better care than Dr Fleming, who completed his fellowship at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC. He worked closely with a Urologist who specialized in the same type of cancer. Their plan was a very potent chemotherapy before surgery to attempt to shrink the cancer & kill any loose particles before surgery. I got to know & trust Dr Fleming because my husband would fib about his symptoms. Therefore I had to be at every appointment. His treatment plan & the surgery that followed were successful. But my husband wasn't successful at giving up the cause of the cancer. The experience with the hospital's staff doctors was not good. So Dr Fleming was the doctor I trusted near the end. When I left a message for him to call, he actually came to the hospital to give me the news. He & the urologist he worked with were an exceptional team. About 10 years ago my PCP was thorough in diagnosing a problem & referred me to a Hematologist for a consultation. I freaked out when I learned that the Hematologist was with VOA, fearing the implication. His findings were that it wasn't an oncology problem. But he noticed I was severely dehydrated & immediately sent me to their infusion room for an IV. Even though it wasn't his specialty he was determined to find the root of the problem. After quite a lot of testing the problem was found. It was a rare food born bacteria that had to be reported to the Health Department so they could determine where I had contracted it. There was no need. I knew exactly the restaurant where I ate right before the problem began. It wasn't in Coastal Virginia. I am so thankful for VOA having taken control of solving & treating a problem so difficult to find & cure. Needless to say, this medical group comes with my highest recommendation.

There were a large number of First Atlantic Restoration vans parked in close proximity to the entrance. Allowed to go through security screening I was surprised to be turned away and sent to Brock Cancer Center, Turning into Brock Center from Kempsville Road I discovered a convenient side entrance with much closer parking than entering through the beautiful front lobby. The side entrance opened to the hall that has the entrance to Outpatient Check in, which included Bloodwork, Imaging & the Breast Center. There I learned that the problems at Leigh were caused by water pipe breaks. Many of the Leigh employees had been sent to Brock to handle the patients being sent there. I've been a fan of the Brock Imaging Center for some time. Since fewer people realize there's an Imaging Center there, appointments are more readily available. I've had MRI's, Catscans and Bone Density Scans done at Brock. The equipment is state of the art and the employees are friendly. I'll continue to have my Imaging done at Brock with an added benefit of having discovered the more convenient Kempsville side entrance.

This is because he has missed cancer twice, the second time being this past summer. The first time he missed my thyroid cancer. He kept telling me that I had "pretty bad" acid reflux and that's why my face, throat, and neck was hurting. I was prescribed every antacid medication available but the symptoms kept getting worse. His nurse finally suggested that I see an ear, nose, and throat specialist. I took her advice and finally I had resolution to my problem. I kept seeing Dr. Janson because I gave him the benefit of the doubt. However, this past June, I went to see him because I had stomach pain and my abdominal girth was increasing rapidly. His diagnosis after an upper endoscopy was delayed gastric emptying, which he had diagnosed a few years ago. Again, he prescribed medication and sent me on my way. After a visit to the ER a couple of weeks after seeing him, for stomach pain and not being able to breathe, I was diagnosed with a stomach mass. It turns out I had a 9-1/2 lb tumor. The mass was removed in July. I know am under the care of an oncologist. I trusted Dr. Janson to thoroughly investigate my gastrointestinal symptoms, instead he missed these two life-threatening conditions. I feel that he rushed to get me out of his office (and on to the next patient) and prescribed medications without taking the time to investigate and get to the real problems. I do have to say, however, that his staff is great, from the receptionist and appointment scheduler to most of the nurses.

Then we waited at the front desk for another 15 mins standing at the check in for her to tell my husband it's ok. The other two ladies just ignored us. Until I ask do u know where she went? They said she had to ok it with the doctor. Update! We revisited Went the urology of virginia 6 months later and the front desk personnel were better at greeting patients. Most patients that come in have major health problems and need extra special attention. The lobby needs to feel more comfortable. The tv that is on talks about problems a patient might be experiencing. Why not put something else on tv such as hgtv or a cooking channel to get things away from the patients mind. Lack of up to date magazines and uncomfortable chairs dont help either. The check in computer pads are efficient but are overwhelming to older patients who dont how to use an iPad and still have a flip phones so how can you expect them to use this device. I understand it cuts down on the paperwork but no one ever asks would you like us to help you this first time. Maybe after that they'll get the hang of it. I've seen a couple get into an arguement over how slow he was going to answer the questions.

I ask for a placement bag for my brother, and of course, they give me the wrong stuff, way to goread more
