Came here on a Sunday afternoon on a nice day in VA. It was about 15 minutes away from the hotel. My first impression was damn that's a huge flag! Then, I was like, where do I park? I ended up parking near the basketball courts. There were many people at the park but there was still lots of available parking around. I saw people playing basketball, soccer, kites, football, etc. I was surprised they had a horse shoe court that looked like they could have a tournament as there were so many lanes. I walked through the park at first, walked to the dog park, then the pond, then circled back to the forest playground, which was huge! If my kids were little they would have loved this place! They had a stage that could have a small outdoor concert. After checking out the kids' playground, I went for a full walk around the park and realized there were 9-11 memorials, military gold star family memorials, and other patriotic displays along with huge flag in the middle of the park. There were areas to have picnics, exercise areas, and lots of open space for pets and kids and any outdoor activities. There were two bathroom areas at opposite sides of the park. One near the kids playground and the other near the skate park. I did about 1.5 loops around the park before leaving. I didn't like that there were people smoking weed in their cars and the smell was pretty strong. But overall the park is nice and perfect for family outings and a day out in the sunshine. read more

I have gone to City Park off and on for many years, many times with my kids while they were young, and many times for special events like the Jubilee, a friend's dance performance, and, this past weekend, for the Burger Bash. There is plenty to do there from Fun Forest (playground) to picnics, basketball, skateboarding, outdoor fitness area, trails, volleyball, and grills for those picnics. Even though it was a bit chilly, I decided to take my grandbabies to the park to work off some energy. It's a nice area with plenty to keep the children entertained for a long period of time. Not surprisingly it was packed (first day of spring break) even though we went early. For the most part, each child had an attentive adult but of course there were a few that needed supervision. The area was clean and all equipment seemed to be in working order. Very well maintained area for a city park. Will definitely take my babies back for more fun in the sun. read more

Chesapeake City Park (CCP) is probably the largest park in Chesapeake. We've been there once before, for the 4th of July fireworks last year. It was a great place to hold the event. They had food trucks parked and people were still able to spread out pretty well, considering there was a pandemic that was on high back then. The field is huge and held quite a lot of people. Most all big outdoor events I've heard of in Chesapeake are held there. My friend recently told us about Fun Forest and told me it was within CCP. I did not notice it the last time we were there because of the crowd, but I was excited that it was close to home. We decided to check it out last week to give the kids something to do before I dove deep into house chores UGH...why does adulting have to get in the way of fun?! What a fun space for the kiddos! Not sure how long ago it was built and it does seem a little weathered and could use at least a new coat of paint, but what a great design. Nice change from the generic playground set ups that you find at most neighborhood parks that are just placed just to say they put one. Fun Forest is built within a forest of mature trees, living up to its name. The park is actually a fun place to play. All the structures are made of solid wood and provides great shade from the mature trees for those hot summer months! Some features: - 3 main areas of solid wood structures for play (each with designated age groups, although I don't think most kids/parents were paying close attention. Most of the littles were hanging out with the school age kids in the main space and the littles play area was practically empty. I mean, who doesn't want to be a part of the action? - main play area that includes climbing wall, towers, slides, - sand pit - little stage area with open space with grass - swings - section with turtle, whale and shark statues for great photo opps - octagon shaped enclosed bench seating area - pathways for walking - Buddy Bench - covered shelter that is a great place for parents to sit - benches throughout the park - Little Library - QR codes are available to do a read-a-long with the littles - I saw quite a few shelters equipped with picnic tables. I'm sure it's a hotspot for birthday parties! What I also like about the park is that the play area is fenced in, so there is only one way in and way out to ensure that kids don't get lost. Walk paths, playground, dog park, events It's all here. Don't have much to say because I'm currently walking. But Chesapeake city park is it. Festivals are held here, food trucks events, basketball and volleyball games. Children's field trips. Restroom facilities are always really clean. Plenty of parking It's safe. I always see park security. Not a whole lot of trash cans through out but plenty of dog waste stations. There's bleachers and pavilions with grilling stations. And last but not least, an exercise park and plenty of benches along the walk or run paths. And they're wide enough to share comfortably with cyclists. And a little skate park. read more

I attended an outdoor dance workout class on 5/16/21 & it was my first time at that park. The park had plenty of parking & there was a lot of signage all around to help you get to your destination. We were dancing on the stage & my son was able to play basketball while he waiting for my class to be over. Most people at the park wore masks. There was a park to play in...a skate park...places to eat...basketball courts...& the stage. I will definitely be going back. read more

Updated review during the pandemic: bathrooms are not open, there are porta potties but nowhere to wash hands. There are trash cans and all of the picnic tables are open for use. The park is nice and shaded and is surrounded by beautiful tall trees. We came on a Sunday, it was full of children and parents. If you are concerned about contracting a virus, this is the perfect breeding ground due to no proper hygiene conditions, contaminated apparatuses and no social distancing. If you don't mind all that this is a great place to take your kids, so much to play on, for big kids and toddlers alike! There is also a nice big dog park across the parking lot and lots of sidewalks to walk or bike all around the park if you like. What a beautiful park! We came here for the Arts and Crafts show this weekend. Everything was spaced out great and not too crowded. So many amazing vendors! The park was very clean and the employees were kind. There are picnic areas and pavilions and a skate park. Many areas to park. (Talking about Fun Forest) I've lived various places around the country (and world) and can honestly say this is the coolest hugest most interesting playground I've ever seen. It felt like it went on and on and on and on... That I can remember, there are at least 3 different playground areas, in addition to 2 rock climbing walls and a really cool sculpture (shark, whale, and turtles) area for climbing. I can't imagine how much fun this would be as a kid! This place is good for all ages. You have more advanced, higher stuff, and then an area just for 2-5yo which is perfect for my little guys. It's all nestled in a beautiful area of the park, with giant trees and lots of green space... seriously is just the perfect setting! I also really love that the actually playground equipment is almost all wood, it really makes it feel more like a full experience for the kids. We are gonna be here a lot, I think! read more

It seemed fitting to write my 300th review on a place we spend a good percentage of our free time as a family. I've watched Chesapeake City Park grow and change in the 35+ years I have lived here - the most notable being the addition of Fun Forest in the mid-90s and the reconstruction after arson destroyed part of it a few years later. One of my best friends and I even had our handprints added during the original construction, but many of those have come down over time. The playground itself remains as fun as I remember (I do still have to chase my little one through the maze of wood structures) - with so many places to hide, climb, swing, slide and just be a kid. It's an epic place to wear out our toddler and I hope she enjoys it for many years to come! I appreciate that they have segregated the play areas for children of different ages - though we still see older kids on the toddler play areas, which can be frustrating. I have to put on my "mean mom" face to encourage them to relocate, but it works every time! The earlier in the day you go, especially on weekends, the more freedom there is to play unhindered (ie fewer kids)! We love taking advantage of the many events they have throughout the year - the Great American Food Fest every October, Symphony Under the Stars, the Farmer's Market, Jubilee every May (which hopefully returns next year), and so many others. You can usually see a fitness group taking advantage of open spaces, other organized games or activities taking place or a party under the many covered picnic pavilions, so there's something here for literally everyone! Horseshoe pits, a fitness area, a skate park, 2 fenced dog parks and ample basketball courts can be found here. There's even a table near the basketball courts for a game of chess or checkers. We also enjoy walking the paved loop when the weather is cooler as most of the path is in direct sunlight. Well-shaded areas are located by Fun Forest or near the ball courts/horeshoe pits. There are 2 (usually super clean) restroom facilites: one in front of Fun Forest and the other near the skate park. We absolutely love this park! I will echo a previous reviewer that the city staff does well maintaining the grounds. I do wish those who use the park, especially around the ball courts, would be more diligent at walking the VERY short distance to the recycling and trash cans. We see so many plastic bottles littering the area, especially in the mornings on our walks and it makes me so sad. Thank you to the staff for taking such great care of this valuable city resource! read more

LOVE IT! Such a great location to exercise and have sweet dog time!!! I don't take my dog to the dog park but I do walk her around the normal park area!! I like going early or during the day because there aren't as many people nor dogs lol because my pup doesn't like seeing dogs nonetheless hear them bark at her cute self haha! I love that I can walk on the side walk!! Other parks only have grassy areas but thankfully there is a side walk throughout the entire park ( yay to no goose poop)! There are also beautiful scenery areas, volleyball net, basketball court, picnic tables, and horseshoe areas!! I've been hear so many times for picnic, games, and I even took my high school pictures here (lol)!!! It's beautiful and a great place to go to!! Chesapeake City Park is located along Greenbrier Parkway and is fairly easy to get to. When you come in, this park is quite large. There is a lot of open space and when I visited, it looked like they were setting up for an event. There is ample parking available here. They also have picnic areas throughout the park that can be rented as well. My visit here was on May 13, 2018. We came to this park after visiting City View Park in Virginia Beach. Once we got parked, we went over to the Fun Forest part of the park, and that's where we remained for the entire visit. Once entering the Fun Forest, I didn't realize just how big the park was there. Most of the area inside is covered by trees. There are three main play areas for the kids, and each area is noted with what age group they are geared for. All of the main play areas are wooden in structure and include slides, walking areas, monkey bars, swings, and so much more. We were here at the park for about two hours, and my niece didn't want to leave, but it was time to go. Overall, this was a great park to visit. My niece loved it as well and will definitely be back again in the future, even though I don't live in Chesapeake. Although I didn't get a chance to explore everything at the park on this visit, I plan to check out the other features in the future. If you are looking for a park in Chesapeake, this is a great park to go to with children, especially at the Fun Forest portion of the park. read more

We are from Atlanta, GA and I've never seen a park like this. We came here everyday during our two-week stay. Loved the playground. Super magical and tucked away in a wooded area. The sandbox was my toddler's favorite! They have community toys, including trucks, shovels and buckets, for all to use. The wooden equipment is beautiful and has perfect nooks and crannies for hide-and-seek. The shark, turtle and whale statues are amazing and perfect for pictures! Love how widespread the park is so when it is busy, it doesn't feel that busy. Loved the community feeling of the park with people playing basketball at the basketball court and walking the trail in the distance. My toddler LOVED the preserved train they have sitting at the back of the park AND the train he spotted passing by behind the woods of the playground. I enjoyed taking my son here everyday. When I think of parks this one is definitely one of the firsts to come to mind. With so much to do here, it does not disappoint one bit. Basketball courts, trails, parks and more! I've taken lots of photos here of couples and families because it's such a beautiful area as well. Located very close to greenbrier mall, visiting this park can be made into part of an all day outing. There are restaurants and fast food joints near by. The mall and several other shopping centers are also in close proximity. Take the whole family and even the pets! read more

THIS IS A MEMBERSHIP REQUIRED DOG PARK!! Trying another dog park with the hubby and Hendrix. This will definitely be a go to park for Hendrix to release that "puppy energy"! There are two small dog and two large dog parks. The large dogs are separated by strong fences. Which makes me feel at ease to let my smaller puppy explore. One play area is by the entrance of Greenbrier parkway. This one has a gravel parking lot. The other is beside the skate park. This one has ample paved parking. Also, there were lots of people around. I would feel comfortable bringing him here alone. If you don't want to go into the dog park or purchase a membership, many people walked the park with their canine companions. So either way, it's a fun day for both puppy parent and puppy. City park hit a home run! I started to come to the the park on warmer mornings with Meeko. We usually go around 7:30/8AM so I can let my little guy be free in a yard, then sometimes, if after work, we go back for our evening walks. We love it! In the morning I know when someone has come to the dog park to clean. They leave the gates open, to welcome the first round of pups coming through. Their groundskeepers even hang up items that might have been forgotten on their hand-built rack. A very big shout out to their groundskeepers for working so hard. We do enjoy this park as we come to play Pokemon Go and walk with our dog. The only real complaint I have is lack of shade when walking the entire park. It's hard to walk with your dog that doesn't like to be chased by other dogs that are bigger than him when there isn't much shade. He loves long walks, but we have to wait until we're near the picnic tables for more shade again after a certain point. Other than that, the park is super pretty and well groomed. I like that there are multiple dog parks so that if you're licensed, you can go in one that is less crowded. The flow of the sidewalk is also really great for walking around multiple times so you can get steps in. In the future, we hope to come out to some events being held here so we can see it in full swing. read more

The city park in the name means it is the largest. This park host annual festival and carnivals. It does have plenty of parking and space for everyone. This playground is a short walk away from the playground amongst some trees. It is fenced in and provides some peace of mind that little people are contained. The playground is built for different ages groups. The main playground for slightly older children including a rockwall, monkey bars, swinging bridges and tunnels. A younger kids playground is very open and offers items that little people can reach. The middle area between the two is a nice common ground. Kids can run around and up to the top of a slide, play with the musical tunes and run under the playground. Swings are set off to the side for both independent and dependent swingers. There are benches along the playground as well as covered seating areas for observing the kids. The restrooms are located toward the front of the play area. A stage is also inside the playground area. read more

Such a beautiful park that is clean! Every event I've been to there, I typically see no signs of what previously took place. Such a big area that has different roadways and sidewalks to get around. When there's an event, there's typically a person at the entrance to direct traffic and direct traffic when parking since they set up parking on the grass. This park is great. It has several wide open grass areas and a walking/jogging/biking path that wind all around the park and in between also. This park also features a few basketball courts, a dog park and a skate park in the rear. In addition, their are different areas around the park that have picnic tables. I've also taken my daughters to the kids playground which includes swings, slides, monkey bars, climbing rocks and a huge fort for kids to run around in. What's also great about the playground area is that they have 4 or so different play areas that were made for particular age groups. I've also read that they do have a marketplace here but I have never been so can't comment on that. read more

Be advised if you take your kids to the basketball courts there are plenty of foul mouthed tweens, and teens out there unsupervised who feel they own the courts, and can do/say what they want to since their parents aren't there with them. The Parks department of Chesapeake has done a great job with this park. The only downfall is that there is no water available near the basketball courts that was turned on. So if you like to enjoy several hours of playing recreational ball on the courts, or even at the sand volleyball courts there is not any water available to refill your drink bottles. Great dog park area that is fenced off away from the main park. Great skatepark as well. If they would have water fountains, and some shade near the basketball and volleyball courts, this would be a 5 star spot!! read more

The Fun Forest playground is the best playground we have visited in years. Most playgrounds where we live are made of plastic and are all somewhat similar. Fun Forest is built with wood, has many varied play areas, lots to climb, many slides and even a stage. It is a magical place with lots of opportunity for kids to use their imaginations. read more

The Fun Forest at Chesapeake City Park is worth the five stars alone. The play area has three separate, age-appropriate, jungle gyms. The play area for big kids is impossible to navigate for a toddler. But not fear not, there is a large toddler gym that they can expend as much energy as their little bodies can generate. Parking is abundant as is the shading (many tall trees). There are over a dozen swings, including a pair for physically-impaired youths. There are also plenty of photo ops. This park is one of Chesapeake's best. Since the recently build new portion was completed it really has provided a play area good for all ages. It is easy to get to, easy to navigate, has good parking, and indoor bathrooms. The play area is fenced so no little ones can escape easily. The dog park is a great place to run and the skate park when finished should be a fun area to spend some time. The farmer's market is really well set up in the market place section. The outdoor amphitheater is well done and the new lawn makes for a wonderful place to take the family. Next time there is an event, make sure to take the whole family! read more
