As Rhode Islanders not living under rocks know by now, Cumberland Farms has been on a construction rampage the last few years, cranking out convenience store equivalents of Walmart Supercenters. Even for a new-generation Cumby's store, this one is super attractive, especially its outdoor patio, under an expansive pergola. But, this store is somewhat crippled by a traffic engineering experiment gone awry - yes, I'm talking about the numerous rotaries ("roundabouts") that have taken over the village of Apponaug. Thank God I had my stepson to guide me as to the best entrance to pull into, so I would be in the best position to leave without being trapped by the rotary right next to this Cumby's. Who knew getting a coffee at Cumby's would involve strategic planning? And, their parking lot is cramped for the size of the store and volume of customers. The inside has some warts too. For instance, the TP dispenser in the men's bathroom threatened to fall off the wall at any minute, and a soap dispenser was out of soap. I saw some large gaps in stock, particularly 20-ounce bottles of soda (does my stepson live here?). But, the highlight of my visit today were the employees. "We at Cumby's take care of our customers!" I overheard an older female employee at the coffee station tell a man getting coffee. Gee, if she patted herself on the back any harder, her shoulder might've become dislocated. Then, the young man who cashed me out looked as nerdy as Pee Wee Herman. When he handed me my change, he put the coins on top of the bills, with the predictable result that the coins slid off the bills, and scattered all over the counter. He apologized profusely, but then admitted that happens to him frequently. I suggested he change his technique to handing customers coins first, then bills. Hah!!

I stop in regularly for gas and the occasional lottery ticket (when the jackpot is huge) . It's also a reliable spot to pick up milk for those 10 pm "oh shoot" situations. They have cash discounts for gas which is a decent deal. They have the typical assortment of cold drinks but also a huge assortment of groceries. The have the most random counter product which I'm not going to detail here. It's just...random. Of course. Seems like every convenience store is a smoke shop and this one is no exception. I'm not into any of that business but it's all here. Lots of parking. Easy in and out to the main road. They'll definitely continue to get my business.

This station is located on the outskirts of Wickford Village. Even when I lived in town, though, I preferred to go to other gas stations, because this one has a funky parking lot, with little room to maneuver. Furthermore, it's located at a very busy intersection, so pulling in and out of here can be difficult. Although I still drive by here occasionally, I would be unlikely to get gas here, since their gas prices are relatively high. For instance, as of today (7/19/2018), they were charging $2.99 a gallon for regular unleaded, which I can get in West Warwick for 25 cents cheaper. Granted, gas prices tend to be higher in South County, but they are higher than many gas stations in N.K. Furthermore, the convenience store is tiny, and I didn't notice a public bathroom. There is a small coffee station to the left of the counter, but not much was brewing there when I stopped in around 11 a.m. Selection of drinks, snacks and convenience store items is very basic, and I noticed some big gaps in stock. Bottled water and Red Bulls got hit particularly hard. The female cashier was very chatty with what were presumably regular customers, and she talked very animatedly, waving her hands around. Normally, I would rate this gas station and convenience store at 2 stars; I'm only giving 'em 3 stars because of nostalgia and longevity.

Today, they were even worse than usual. The A/C was weak. The men's bathroom was out of order (with a case of bottled water blocking the door). I was sixth in line; although there were THREE employees behind the counter, only one worked a register (and she was way too chatty for such a long line). I guess the other two employees thought whatever they were doing was more important than serving customers.
