The Cheshire Cat Pub was an absolute gem! Our first impression was dealing with the very full parking lot at 2:00 pm on a Friday. Fortunately, we got a spot quickly. Inside the quaint old store building, the place was packed with customers. We were seated at a table for two downstairs, so even though there were plenty of people, our nook felt intimate and cozy. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the pub's history, menu and beers, which enhanced our experience. Everything on the menu looked good. Since I am not a beer drinker, I tried the vintage root beer soda. It came in a can, but they gave me a glass with the cutest cats on it--which was purrfect! Meanwhile, my husband sampled two different beers from the tap rotation, and he thought they were absolutely fabulous. For the main meal, my husband ordered the Hot Beef & Yorkie, which is Yorkshire pudding, shaved Ontario, AAA ribeye, horseradish mayo, roasted vegetables, gravy, and mashed potatoes. We ended up sharing the meal, and it was to die for! I would definitely order that again, because, really, you can't go wrong when there's Yorkshire pudding in the dish. Been around the Carp community for several years, Cheshire Cat Pubs brings local and British Pub fare with innovation and great flavours! The Beef and Yorkshire Pudding was arguably the best dish I ever paid for about $25 and each bite was worth every dollar given its portion size and rustic charm in every bite. However, the Sticky Toffee Pudding is the best $10 you will ever spend. Served with local Carps Creamery Ice Cream, the Sticky Toffee Pudding is nicely balanced and not too sweet which is perfect to end off any meal! The pizza and wings came from the pizza oven kitchen, great smoked wings but limited to bbq (unless ordering off the main pub menu which had other flavors) and fantastic cheese pizza with thin flavorful crust. Came to this English pub for the first time the other day! It was a gorgeous day out, so we decided to sit on the patio with a nice pitcher of sangria. I read that their hot beef and Yorkshire pudding (Hot Beef and Yorkie) were great, so I got it with mashed potatoes, as our server recommended. The sangria was a little watery and a bit too sweet but otherwise refreshing, but the beef and Yorkie were amazing! It had thinly sliced local rib eye, horseradish cream, gravy, and roasted vegetables. It was a good call choosing mashed potatoes over chips (fries). It was a gorgeous plate with a generous serving of hot beef and mashed potatoes. There was a nice assortment of veggies and they were roasted perfectly. I didn't taste the horseradish cream as much - it wasn't strong, but the gravy was flavourful and added just the right amount of salt to everything. I could've bought so many (more) things from the fridge and freezer in the shop, but I went with the frozen steak and mushroom pie (single serving), frozen bacon mac 'n' cheese, Carp Custom Creamery loaded butter tart ice cream, Kichesippi Beer Cheshire Cat Pilsner, Dominion City Elevenses Chocolate Chip Pancake Stout, and Cold Bear Bee Savvy Braggot. I ordered a roasted tomato soup and salt and pepper chicken wings. It was okay. The soup was super thick. I am only giving two stars because we were charged for a beer that we did not purchase. I paid the bill and only realized my mistake after. I thought my boyfriend drank two beers and I had two beers, but then I remembered that our server told us that the original beer that he wanted, the keg was empty, so he didn't get his first beer. We tried to prove that we didn't have the extra beer but by that time the pint glasses had been cleared from our table and we were served by several different people. Have been here a few times and usually got good service, good food. We brought friends from out of town and wanted to share a restaurant we've enjoyed but we were all disappointed by the service. A/C didn't seem to be doing much inside (very hot day) so we 4 sat outside and despite the heat, it was quite tolerable with the shade. My hats off to the pizza makers for managing in that heat. We found the server a bit impatient or at least very 'down to business' and I don't think we were dithering over the orders. In hindsight I think our server was finishing her shift and just wanted 'outta there'. Our drinks and appetizers came quite promptly, but I asked twice for water which didn't come for at least 15 minutes after requesting it. When seated, we were warned that if our orders came from the 2 different kitchens (pizza vs. main kitchen), our orders might not arrive at the same time. Wow... what an understatement. Pizza came within 20 minutes of ordering and then at least an hour after the pizza arrived we had to follow up on the remaining 3 orders. Aside from a quick appearance to deliver our water, we saw nothing of our server in that time so we found the host, who brought our mains and briefly apologized for the delay. All very underwhelming. Comp something, or give more of an explanation at least. The food was good but just took too dang long. We learned our server's shift had ended and another server stepped in. She was at least more friendly and was more prompt when I discovered my salad came without any dressing, but by this time, too much damage had been done. After the crazy long wait and being abandoned by an unwelcoming server I'm not sure we'll go back. Yeah, restaurants get busy, but this isn't their first rodeo, this was all just badly managed. read more

My husband's one request for his birthday dinner was "a place with good beer and a good burger." I knew right away where to take him - the Cheshire Cat Pub! You can't help but immediately fall in love with the local pub feel upon walking in. The only reservation I could snag was upstairs, which did its best to carry the same ambience. Asking my husband throughout the evening what he thought, his one regret was not being able to eat downstairs. The service level adds to that local pub feel at the Cheshire Cat. We arrived at a time where a staff member was walking around a beer sample. Later on, my husband asked the server's recommendation for a hazy IPA. Almost immediately, the server offered to bring up two samples. As a couple that love to try different beers, this was much appreciated! Throughout dinner, we already began talking about coming back another time. Taking advantage then of their weekly specials menu, my husband ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken Burger, and I the Fettucine. Let me tell you, they do NOT skimp on the chicken burger! From the very nice gentleman that seated us and explained how everything worked, (and offered up the wifi password without me asking), to Cody, our excellent waiter, the experience was exceptional. Seated at 1240, party of 4. Drinks served and orders taken at 1250. At 1315, server said food on the way. At 1330, server again said food on the way. At this time, people who arrived after us had been served.At 1340, server said food was being plated. 1355 manager said he would see what the issue was. 1400 food served , manager apologized and said he would comp dessert. For the " comped dessert ", there was one piece of cake and 4 forks. The server never came by to check on us. We had to flag down our server to ask about our food each time we asked. She never stopped at our table but answered as she was walking by. We asked for water at 1330 that never arrived. I appreciate that the manager never offered excuses and said he didn't know what happened to our order. I didn't appreciate the fact that we waited over an hour for a simple meal, was offered a "comp dessert" and was given a piece of cake snd 4 forks. We felt completely ignored and that the staff could care less about us. I have never had such a horrible experience at a restaurant. I always tip well when I eat out but for the first time in my life, I did not tip. We felt like we were invisible. I was embarrassed because I was taking friends to lunch and this was the experience. Never again. And I will let others know my experience. Great spot...Jana and her team are terrific! My wife has Celiac and needed Gluten-Free dishes; the chicken curry was great and totally GF. They can do a lot GF, which is unusual for pub fare. This cozy little pub has an authentic, homey feel of a British pub, although it is a very small place. It is usually crowded in the evening and especially on weekends, when the parking can be bad (hard to believe they can fit so many people on there, sometimes! But now it has improved since there's the upstairs.) The menu is very good, and the selection of their beers is stellar. We have been a regular here for years! ~~~~~~~~~ UPDATE: Restaurant reopened in December 2013. Doing a BOOMING business! January 28 2013 was a very sad day indeed: The Cheshire Cat Pub burned down to the ground from a fire that apparently started inside the building. The stone walls were left standing but apparently are not safe. At this time, the fire department has not deemed this to be arson. The owners have vowed to reopen, which was reinforced by the outpouring of love and sadness on their Facebook page (look for "Cheshire Cat Pub Regulars" in Facebook.)
