TL;DR: Nice restaurant in the Byward Market with a beautiful patio out back into a courtyard. Great Happy Hour offerings. Went for Happy Hour with some colleagues after work. Happy Hour is everyday 3pm-5:30pm. Pizzas are $12 and they have drink specials. I had the Tiki Tide ($10) and the Pepperoni pizza. The Tiki Tide is rum, blue curacao, lime juice and orgeat. It was tasty and very photogenic. The pizza was covered in pepperoni, which was great, but it was a bit too greasy for my liking. I wish they had an option with veggies. The courtyard patio behind the restaurant is beautiful and nicely shaded. There was even live music towards the evening. Service was fantastic. Our server was attentive without being intrusive. I noticed that the women's washroom was running low on soap and notified one of the staff nearby and when I went to use the washroom again, the soap dispenser had been refilled. We had brunch here two days in a row during our stay in Ottawa. We liked what we had so much the first day that we wanted to come back and try more of the menu. The home fried potatoes and hollandaise sauce were excellent! I had the Clarendon bowl with chicken one day and the beef hash the next. Both were so tasty. My good friend and I brunch almost every weekend. We have been to many places. The best brunch I have ever had is at the Clarendon. the eggs Benny is delicious. They poach the eggs perfectly. I think the potatoes are cooked in duck fat or at least taste that good. They give you a grilled tomato. The hollandaise is wonderful. It is simply the best. Cute Place, it is summer so we ate in the courtyard area, it was very nice and "European". The food was not amazing but it was good. The price was good, not to expensive, worth the price. The vibes were amazing; the courtyard the music the people, the vibes were immaculate. The stone hadn't been re done recently so the table and chairs were quite shaky. The Clarendon Tavern has a great vibe and feel to it. I stopped by for Sunday brunch a couple weeks ago on a whim! I was pleasantly surprised. My usual go to brunch is either eggs benny or eggs and skillet dish. Their hash skillet sounded delicious - Jalapeño cheddar smokies, caramelized onions, red pepper relish, poached egg and hollandaise sauce! It did not disappoint! For the price I wish the portion size was bigger but it was so tasty nonetheless. The brunch menu is small but yet so much to choose from. Would I visit again?! Definitely. read more

My friends and I had a bad experience in this restaurant yesterday during a bachelorette party. From start to finish, food to service. Everything had a problem. I want to say we were at a bachelorette party and the bride was wearing a sash that said "Bride to be" so it was obvious that this was a special event. To start, we had a reservation for 7:15. We arrived a few minutes early. They told us no tables available outside would fit us and that they would see if one of their booths inside could fit us all. We did not fit. So they put us in the back room. I guess it was nice we got a private room for our party. You would think if we had a reservation that a table would be ready for us, but I guess not. We were given water pitchers but no glasses to drink from. So we just waited till someone came back to see us. We finally got glasses and put in our drink orders and food orders. Food took longer than expected and once we got the food only 6 out 7 of us got our meals. We waited for a few minutes (3-5 min) and the last meal still hadn't arrived. The person in question had to leave the back room we were in and go look for someone to ask about the meal. She saw it sitting in the window in the kitchen and told (what I suspect was an expeditor) that everyone at the table has food except her and that she can see it in the kitchen. She was told that someone would bring it over right away, that she didn't know it was for our table. It took an additional 5 minutes. While waiting for the last meal, we noticed all the food was warm, hardly warm, or just cold. Not enough time had passed for this to happen for it to have happened at the table. -Two people that got the chicken curry had vastly different portions. One person got 1/2 the amount of the other. They were both somewhat warm and had very little chicken in them. -The two burger orders were just warm. -The bride and I got the steak, fries and beats. Everything on both plates was just cold. Not even a little warm. -The fish and chips despite being the last to arrive was the only hot meal. So I guess that the only good thing and the drinks were good. Once the server came back to check on us we told him the problem with the food temperature and he seemed uncaring about it but offered to have the two cold meals (the bride and I) remade. A few minutes he came back and said there was only one steak left. So I ended up getting another meal, chicken curry. I didn't trust them to make the other beef dish and I was told by the others at the table that it was an okay dish. And guess what, that was as well hardly warm. But thankfully the bride's new meal was better. I work in the restaurant industry. If something like this happen where I worked, a manager or supervisor would have come over to the table to apologise and talk to us. Maybe offer a free dessert, comp the meal or offer us to come back for a free meal to try to redeem themselves. Something. None of that ever happened. When the server came back to clear our plates he asked us if we enjoyed our meal. The mother of the bride told him no and explained all the problems we had with everything and his response was " I guess ill get your bills". He didn't even ask how we wanted to split it. He gave us all our bills ( one person paid for themselves and the bride) and then proceed to stand over each of us when we had the debit machine. It made a few people uncomfortable and pressured them into tipping more than they wanted (the easiest options were 18% 20% and 22% other options required more action). We weren't even told a discount was applied. Sure that was nice but more should be done it was around 9$-10$ off each bill. Everyone working there seemed unapologetic and uncaring about our experience. I do not recommend this restaurant at all. If it was just an off night for the kitchen and the problems were isolated to just the food I would've given them another try. BUT. The service was one of the worst I have ever experienced in Ottawa. You couldn't pay me to come back. read more

Don't order the "Triple fried chips". My friends and I were really looking forward to trying this new place as we are big fans of its sister restaurant, Sidedoor, which is our usual go-to place. But I talked them into trying The Clarendon for a change and now I wish I hadn't. I ordered the buttermilk fried chicken and chips and one of my friends ordered the lingcod and chips. From the "triple fried" description, we were expecting extra crisp fries. Sadly, we both found them to be limp and weirdly chewy as if they had been reheated. Our other friend tried them after hearing us complain and she agreed with our verdict that they were disappointingly limp. The rest of the food was fine and the service was good (although we had to chase down the waiter to order dessert after he gave us the list of available items). We did inform the waiter of our disappointment with the chips. My friend told him that they were terrible and I returned mine having eaten only a couple. The waiter apologized but didn't offer to replace the chips. Perhaps double- frying or just a regular single frying would have been better. read more

Every town has a special pub that's a home away from home. Visiting from Florida, we found our local in Ottawa at the Clarendon Tavern. It has a great selection of beers and wines, and the food is outstanding. A real plus is that the staff, under the capable direction of Drew, goes out of their way to make you feel at home and offer top notch service. If you are looking for good food and drinks, a fantastic atmosphere and a great time, we strongly recommend the Clarendon Tavern. read more

I opted for the pepperoni flatbread and got something almost devoid of flavor and certainly nothing I'd call particularly tasty. Ate here with my parents tonight. The halloumi appetizer with grapefruit surprised in all the right ways. I had the pizza with pineapple and chimichurri; amazing combination. Don't worry it you are not adventuresome, they do have basic burgers and mac and cheese on the menu. The selection of beers was heavily weighted towards Ontario micros, like ABC from Ottawa or Creative Arts from Hamilton. My mom tried the bloody Mary which came with a full hot pepper on a wooden stake -- classy presentation. The deserts are made in house, which I appreciate with my allergies. Thoroughly decent place. Had fish and chips and I added a salad. The fish was a just a bit bland. Should have asked for a bit of salt, but I still enjoyed it, and the chips and salad were tasty. My date had the chicken, and we both ate everything on our plates, so no complaints. The food arrived quickly. The seating was comfortable and the service was attentive, not overbearing. Our server even made a point of letting us know if we wanted to take advantage of happy hour how long we had to order, and he made sure to double check we weren't missing out. This is a new restaurant in the Byward market area. I attended for an evening snack and a beer with my boyfriend. We were dismayed to find school-age children running at full speed around the restaurant playing hide and seek. The staff were apparently unable to do anything about this because the children are the owner's children. This activity completely ruined the ambiance of the place and I will not be returning. I came here for dinner with my family (group of 10) tonight, Food was alright however the whole dinner took almost 3 hours. While this would be standard for fine dining however this place only serves finger food and burgers. Ontop of that the server put a 18% auto gratuity on our bill. It is understandable to do so with a large group we did not feel the service warrented a 18%. We kindly asked the service go remove the autograt so we could add out own tip.
