Something DIRE has happened to Chevalier's Books. The customer service, the friendliness, the familiarity of a clerk's welcome all largely have disappeared, along with the longtime staff who made this place intimate. Maybe the pressure of escalating rent has turned the vibe transactional - unknown. But the rudeness is real. Understand: This bookstore is an LA institution, and I have made it my mission to support it. When I want a book for myself or a friend, I go to Chevalier's - not Vroman's or Skylight, but Chevaliers, though it is farther from my house. If I buy through Bookshop, I credit Chevalier's. This is a gem of a bookstore located in the larchmont district full of interesting and entertaining books. The employees are super friendly here. They have a great collection of best sellers and obscure reads too. They are the oldest book store in Los Angeles and I hope that they last forever. Buy a book and read people! Wow! woweee and yay!!!! A beautifully appointed and gorgeous bookstore right next to my favorite Larchmont pizza place. As my niece and I sat outside having lunch yesterday, we saw many, many parents and children going inside as well as customers young and old! We both enjoyed the "readers" coming in and out! Finally, we walked in and we were seriously blown away! It's a huge space with hundreds of books, beautiful tables and had the smell of new books permeating the space!!! Paper books are my jam. Love the feel of paper in my hands... awesome vibe!!!!!! There is so much to see and do inside this establishment! We left feeling inspired and so happy! Parking on Larchmont sucks! What a cute little bookstore located at Larchmont Village nearby all the restraints and coffee shops. After walking around and stopping at a few stores I saw this book store and I had to go in. Absolutely love the ambiance here, very cozy and smells heavenly. There were a lot of people looking through books and talking to the employees that were very friendly. I'll always support an independent bookstore, but was a bit taken aback this Sunday when I purchased a new hardcover book for more than $30 and was not given a simple bag to protect it as I carried on with my shopping. When I asked for one, I was told that Chavalier's does not supply bags! Not only would a small paper or eco-friendly bag protect the treasured volume (especially on the day of the farmer's market), but if stamped with a nice logo, promote the store. read more

I discovered Chevalier's because I wanted to join a book club, and after sending a few emails asking for info, I ended up joining their Fiction book club, which meets monthly at the store. My first session featured "The Little Friend" by Donna Tartt, which was the book of the month. After reading mostly digital books for a while, I was craving that new book smell again and I definitely got it here. Everything is neatly organized by section, I bought The little friend in store and joined the meeting that same day. I also met Michelle, one of the organizers, who ended up becoming my new book bestie, she helped me discover other titles and introduced me to the group. I truly love this place read more

As a book worm, I was happy to explore Chevalier's Books in Larchmont Village (street parking), as they say, the older in town. I love indie bookstores. The space is nice, I enjoyed browsing it, but I can't say I loved the selection, not edgy enough, not enough local authors which they should support more. I can't say I was taken with the staff, a tad snooty. Another minus, the author events are evenings only, but not in the weekend when you'd have more time to attend. One of my favorite local independent bookstores. I've been going for years. Alas no more. I was just informed they discontinued their science and technology section which was the main draw for me. I was always impressed with the buyer's selections for these areas. I'd pick up titles that I hadn't seen in more mainstream places like Barnes & Noble. There was no reason given for the decision but I'm sure it is due to the store's proximity to Hollywood... no interest in STEM. The fact that this is anything but a perfect solid five stars is insane. They are one of the best book stores even if small and cozy. They offer so much and if it's not on the shelf they order the book for you and you can support a local original bookstore rather than the alternative. I called Quinn, and explained my taste and that I was leaving in a few hours to Italy. I wanted a book set in Italy that was well written, not a plot driven beach read. Chevalier's Books is on Larchmont Bl in Larchmont Village of Hancock Park in Los Angeles. Founded by fellow Francophile, Joe Chevalier in 1940, this book store has an impressive collection books on many subjects for all ages. This store was formerly located across the street more many years. Until recently, had moved to this new, better and more spacious location and just opened less than a week ago. There were hand sanitizers, staff all wore face masks, but not gloves. No food and drinks allowed inside. The staff were all cordial, and welcomed me and my furbabe inside. The layout was neatly organized and labeled according to subject matter. There was even an area for kids to sit and read, very cool. One of my bad habits is collecting books. And I have amassed a library of books. My resolution was not to purchase another book this year...and it's a resolution I can't seem to follow :( I Love Books of all kinds, I'm an avid reader and collector. Today, I did not purchase a book, but was very impressed with this bookstore and its ability to survive through all the challenges, trends and covid. Long before Amazon books, Barnes and Noble, Kindle, were libraries and bookstores and I'm a frequent visitor of both and bravo bravo to their continued existence. Not a fan of this place. I was walking around the neighborhood and was excited to see a local bookstore (not a large chain store). I went into the store looking specifically for the Ruth Ginsburg and Michelle Obama book. I knew exactly what I wanted and was ready to buy. I toured the aisles 2x each and couldn't find the book. The two employees in the store just hung out behind the counter doing their thing. It was obvious that I couldn't find what I was looking for. No help was offered. I have always frequented independent bookstores in LA (Skylight, Book Soup - quite good), but I have never felt so taken care of by thoughtful staff as at Chevalier's! I'm an LA native, and was looking fwd to supporting a small business now that my commute to work has me passing areas I don't typically even touch. Only to have the cashier tell me the owners were two lawyers (of which I replied, ohhh cool) .. but then his exact words thereafter were... "two rich white guys from down the street." I was discouraged that that is how it was decided to describe the owners. They can factually be two rich white guys from down the street but the tone was off-putting and dismissive. It came up bc I asked the history on the store and how long they have been around. My suggestion - mention whether they're LA natives, too, maybe their passion for books, etc. basically anything that gives a first-time customer a better impression. Anyway, dropped a star bc of that experience and the fact that they didn't have six books I was looking for and could only order one of them of which I politely declined. read more

Pre-pandemic, I would come to this bookstore every Sunday before I head towards the farmers market. I would poke my head in and see what books are are being featured. I love this local gem and the staff was always pretty friendly, but also gave me space to roam around. I never tend to know what I want until I see it Nowadays, I don't go Larchmont as much but I make sure to order something now and then from this store. I go to there site or to bookshop dot org and select this store to make a purchase. I haven't tried curbside pickup yet. That's the part of the experience. same thing as to compare e-readers​ with a real book. The same​ thing goes about a bookstore. It's a small store but the selection is really good. I was able to find all the ​books that I wanted. Nice friendly staff. The prices​ are good. There was a review that somebody couldn't​ find a book and nobody​ helped. Like, seriously?? Just ask. They are not mindreaders​. Some people just like to walk around the books, read them, find something new to read. And the area is great. I've been trying to find the words to describe how hurt i was by my last experience at Chevalier's Books. I purchased a copy of Little Women here on 12/31 and you can imagine my shock when I realized this book was not the full volume. This was not marked anywhere on the book or inside the book or on the shelf at Chevalier's. I chose this particular copy because I enjoyed the cover art the best. When I went to return the the book 01/04, I was met with lack luster customer service that made me feel like this was my fault and that my money was now trapped at the store. (Even the owner, here is insinuating this is my fault. You really love to see it.) I could understand this a little more if I was returning the book on a whim or something but this is not the case! The book was not clearly marked. Now I am out $10 and have a bad taste in my mouth. This honestly breaks my heart because I love supporting independent bookstores but when you're met with this it is clear why folks are turning to alternatives. Be careful and double check what you are buying or you will be stuck with an ugly book you didn't want. P.S. 3 of the Little Women Copies on the floor were damaged!! Glad I double checked. read more
