The Daily Planet Bookstore is just wonderful and so well crafted and curated. The smell of Incense wafts to remind you that this has just the right blend of new age to anchor this place yet keep it the same times a bit woo woo - this is the place to buy a magazine for the season. Periodicals are always refreshed and Good people work here to support your perusal of them. Interview Magazine for example by Andy Warhol ( who doesn't want this in their home ) and this place has exotic internationally thick magaiznes like Apartmento which like a true book for a library this is not one you just read or look fit its to build your own person archive of books. The act of wrapping gifts is also present here and the creative wrapping paper exists here and nice people to actually wrap it for you so if you get something like a childrens book decimated to Harriett Beecher Stowe or even the Artist-formerly-known-as-Prince they can wrap it for you ( but its up to you to make sure the price tag has been removed as ive not done this one time and I still blame myself. ) so if you'd looking for a fresh Tarot Deck a book on Silvia Plath or Dorothy Parker this bookstore is for you as it's just the right blend of New York with our lovely City Of Angels. read more

I always enjoy stopping by the Daily Planet to peruse titles either alone or with friends before/after/while sipping coffee from the Bourgeois Pig next door. Books, magazines, records, greeting cards, tarot cards, novelty items, smokes; they've got a great selection departing from the mundanity of the mainstream. What can I say, I am exactly the kind of person who belongs in this curated brand of alternative media's demographic (minus the witchy stuff, but if tarot and the occult appeal to you, you may find that portion of DP's inventory enticing). For instance, on one visit, I picked up a biography of kraut psych band CAN; if you happen to be aware of aforementioned band's existence, chances are you're in this demographic also. Go to the Daily Planet when you get the chance. On another trip to DP, I bought the Heartworm Reader, a collection of poems published by Heartworm Press, DP's owner's husband's publisher. (If such creative collaboration interests you and you are not already aware, DP's Amy Lee and HP's Wes Eisold are also in an excellent band known as Cold Cave.) Funnily, I knew of the band prior to stumbling upon the shop but was completely oblivious to the connection at first despite being pleasantly surprised to discover they stocked Cold Cave's records in their limited (however high quality) vinyl section. I always recommend the Daily Planet to likeminded friends visiting Hollywood, and they usually end up adding it to their lists of favorite LA spots, too. read more

A nice neighborhood bookstore/newsstand. Pretty good selection of family/children's, art, and independent releases. Really good magazine selection as well, which is becoming rare these days. I would say that I wouldn't go out of my way to visit, but I do so I guess it's worth the trek. read more

This place was interesting. Being a bit of a nerd of course I was attracted to the name because I love Superman (Daily Planet, duh..). Of course I wasn't expecting this to be a local Superman museum or anything like that, but would've been cool to at least see a reference or two in there... Anyways, on to the place. Was ok to browse, they have a lot of random book sections, oddly enough for a news stand the magazine and newspapers sections were limited, but I was happy with this little book I found. Could've used a little more feedback on some questions but actually with COVID-19 and all I didn't mind that the girl at the store was just there to cash you out. All good. If you're around the area, good to check out but I wouldn't make a trip out of it. Has a lot of potential to be epic... read more

The coolest selection of books and cards and I love that it's female owned, independent and opened late night in this cute little neighborhood. The goth newsstand you never knew you needed!This place escaped a 90s college town and landed here from a dusty time machine . Normal magazines in the front, punk books and weird astrology shit in the back. Some reviews rip the rude customer service, but this dude working was totally cool and friendly, and he didn't wig out over my loitering for a half hour before buying stuff. This little shop does have really cute nicknacks and what not but the customer service was absolutely awful. The ginger chick that works there has to be one of the rudest people I've ever met. This is a cool little newsstand / boutique gift shop located in Franklin Village. Great place to pick up a last minute gift, obscure magazine, or a book on Charles Manson lol. They even do gift wrapping! If you're looking for a proper bookstore to sit down and read this isn't it -- it's more of a novelty store than anything. The two times I've been it was the same hipster girl working. I see other reviews saying the person was unhelpful and unfriendly; that's probably accurate however I'm pretty low maintenance so I don't really mind if they don't say much. If you're the type of person who asks a ton of question or is looking for a new best friend then maybe find a Barnes & Noble instead. read more

Love the store, but it has the worst staff. One time I was on a date with a guy and I went into the store to check things out. We were just walking around for about 5 minutes and then were flipping through a book. As we were flipping through the book, the lady working the register said in a rude tone, "Are you going to buy anything?" She looked like one of those annoying, hipster feminists and I immediately felt embarrassed. My date and I then looked at each other and left the store. I no longer felt welcome after. She was honestly so rude with her nasty, ugly tone. The worst customer service one can possibly get from a simple Hollywood bookstore. read more

After eating at Birds, my pal insisted that we stop by The Daily Planet. He swore we would love it. It's sort of a newsstand/gift shop more than a book store, and smelled just lovely of fragrent candles and soaps and things inside. Sure there were a few books, but it was mostly interesting magazines (like Modern Drunkard) and knickknacks. Some of my favorite items were the Don't Kill The Pets notepad for your house sitter and the bags and wallets made from recycled billboards. The gifts are definitely pricey (the reason why I did not walk out of there with either of those things). And I wouldn't recommend stopping by after three drinks at Birds if you tend to get a little wobbly at that point since there are plently of breakables to be broken. read more

The shop itself is cool with great gift ideas.... However, Ryan, who was working this morning, was HORRIBLE! He was very RUDE, cocky & arrogant. I am saddened and dismayed by his behavior. He did not care to help us at all, and was quite combative. He portrayed such unprofessionalism in his job. We finally sorted things out, but with great effort and grief on our part. It was truly an AWFUL and UNPLEASANT shopping experience simply to purchase a magazine. I have reached out to the owner to further explain the situation. I am hoping to hear back from her. read more

LOVE this bookstore/magazine stand/trinkety/cute last minute gifty store! I've been hitting this place since the day it opened and always make it a must stop before hitting the various establishments along the Franklin/Scientology Corridor. Loaded with great books from fun and witty authors, unique and sarcastic or handmade greeting cards and full of little things that will make your $20 bills disappear, it's a great shop. I have spent literally hours in this store. The mags at the front catch your attention at first. But as you slowly move toward the back there is always a book or display that grabs you. A night that I had resigned myself to multiple cups of coffee at the Bourgeois Pig I noticed that something was going on in the Daily Planet. They were serving drinks at the back. shweetness. Parking sucks so expect to circle for quite a while and I wouldn't be surprised if you have to park blocks away. read more

Yes, it's a quintessential Hollywood hipster store, but I love it. I love it because it's tidy, the staff is nice, and the offerings vary. Generally the offerings are about the same as you would find at Urban Outfitter's--but the quality is better and more cerebral: Salvador Dali finger puppet? Check. Zipper earrings? Check. Coffee table books you actually want to read? Check. (It's a great place to kill time while waiting for UCB, too.) read more

I received a Voluspa candle as a gift for Christmas this year but the scent was super feminine so I thought I'd just stop by the store and exchange it for another scent as their price tag was still on the bottom and the I had the original bag (and never burned). The ginger girl behind the counter was completely rude and told me that I couldn't exchange it for another scent and that even if I have the receipt, I'd only be able to exchange it within 7 days of purchase. Obviously, I didn't have the receipt but it wouldn't have helped anyway as I arrived back from the holidays way after their return window. She kept repeating that it was store policy and that there was nothing she could do. This is one of the worst customer experiences I've ever had. Stay away!! read more

Great go to for gifts. Well selected book options for all ages-from my friends newborn to my grandparents. Yay. And great magazines. And today I bought a scent for $20. And while I liked the New Baby scent I ended up going with Sunshine. And a glass ladybug. ($2) because sometimes you just need one of those in your pocket. It's true about the service. A course in saying hello and thank you and smiling might not be a bad thing. Didn't deter from the good times that I've had there but in this age of Amazon I really want small biz to thrive. This review is solely based off of the customer service that came from this business. Upon arrival I was really excited to come to this place because I had a friend with me who was ranting about how awesome this spot was. So we decided to swing by on the way home so that I could finally see what the store had to offer. The three of us walked in, with one immediately making a purchase. This being my first time in the store I was really excited to look around. The place had a really small yet unique environment to it. As I'm picking out a few candles, my other friend purchases a few of the crystals at the counter. As I walk to the register to purchase my candles, my friend says "Check out their crystals. This is where I come to buy all of mine." Me being excited and a first time NEW customer I walk over to consider adding to my purchase. As I begin to look at the crystals the associate while rushing to ring me up said, "The owner does not like people just hanging around the store". Mind you that I was on my way out already, my two friends had already finished purchases, none of us had the desire to just "hang out" and I was considering to add to my purchase. I found it very rude, disrespectful, and unprofessional to rush ANY potential, let alone a happy paying customer out of your store for "hanging out to long". I don't think selecting items to purchase is "hanging out". Not to mention there was another group of people that was in the store much longer then me and my two other friends. Overall, I was very displeased with the service given which led to me leaving the store without purchasing my items. As long as the service remains the same we probably won't be back anytime soon. read more

The owner Anna came up to me and told me I wasn't allowed to just hang out and read the books in her store. I had only been in there for ten minutes and I was shopping for gifts for my family for the holidays. I was appalled and left immediately. She was incredibly rude and I do not encourage anyone to shop here or promote her business. The stuff in her store wasn't even that great, so she probably lost her only sale of the day. I went in to this little gift shop/magazine place and thought it was pretty nice. I was shocked to find the low brow/pornographicish material here. They have a lot of normal magazines and periodicals here, but they also have the raunchy stuff here mixed in. I adore this shop. I can easily lose all track of time in this tiny space browsing through their books, toys, cards, and novelties. I actually bought a really cool card here and had it framed. It hangs in my bathroom and many friends have asked me about it because its so cool and different. This is the perfect place to come and get a unique card or gift. This is one of my favorite shops in Hollywood, as it has a great selection of books, unique gift items, and magazines. I often visit when I need a fun present for a baby or wedding shower and I don't want to stick to the often boring and expensive registry. You can find many items for dog or cat lovers, vintage t-shirts, jewelry, bags, adult novelties, journals and notebooks, off-the-wall greeting cards, and much more. For a small store, there is a real variety of merchandise. The only negative is the parking situation. Prepare to drive around the block several times, to get a spot on the street, or take your chance and park in a nearby lot for other businesses. This place is great! The first time I stopped in I was on my way to a sacrifice. I was in charge of the incense, and goats blood. And since I have a good goats blood guy in Culver City I decided to get the incense here. I also needed a good curse book. I explained to the guy that worked there that I wanted to put a few curses on some people that I know. Not a heavy die in an airplane crash curse. More like a wake up to a flat tire nuisance curse.
