My road trip began in Chicago Illinois, and meandered for almost 2,500 Miles through some of the most beautiful places in the country. As I was approaching Baker City, Oregon, I found out that my gas was low. As I approached the first gas station that I could find, I noticed my car was making a horrible noise and it just got louder. I turned off the car and filled up the tank. When I started up the engine, the noise was even louder. Upon looking under the hood, I found out that the serpentine belt was askew. I assessed that this was the cause of the noise. I checked at the automotive shop across the street. They had nothing to help me. I jumped to my phone to see where I could get a serpentine belt for my 2003 Volvo XC70 in a small town in SE Oregon. First was NAPA Auto Parts... nope. Then I tried Carquest. The guy I talked to there said that he would have to track down the part, but that he might know a guy who could fix it. He connected me with Bill Steele of East Side Diesel. Bill had been at the Carquest picking up a part for another job. He came over to where I was at, checked out my car. He informed me that not only was the belt bad, but that also another bearing was bad. He found both parts and replaced them within 2 hours from the moment that I first spoke with him. He did an amazing job and only charged $200 for parts and labor. I felt like this was very fair. After all of this, he then left to fix the previously mentioned job. I can not stress how wonderful my experience with Bill and East Side Diesel was. He has 5 star reviews because he is that great.

We called Fred and he suggested we drop in and charge up our battery before continuing on to Kennewick for a scheduled RV service appointment. Fred personally installed a new glass battery and we rigged up a connection from our generator to a trickle charger connected the new battery. We got to our appointment in good time to install a new alternator and the guys in Kennewick out the door by 5:00! Without Fred's help I might still be waiting an alternator until Monday! When our old Chevy was having battery issues and not holding a charge, they didn't just assume I was an ignorant woman, they just got to work. The battery was only 8 months old and a very heavy duty battery from Les Schwab, but it just wouldn't hold a charge and it was summer, not a cold winter. He charged it up a couple times and watched it drain (we just let him keep it for awhile) he ran diagnostics on it, checked out everything and still couldn't figure out why it wouldn't hold a charge. It is a 2004 Chevy with over 125K miles, but that thing is incredibly dependable (except in this one instance) and doesn't even leak oil. Anyway Les Schwab tested it and said there was nothing wrong with it, but it still wouldn't hold a charge and I couldn't go anywhere without leaving the engine running in case it wouldn't start again. Not too practical! Finally Paul asked if I would consider replacing the battery with another one and I said "whatever you think may work" and that fixed that. Unfortunately Les Schwab wouldn't replace the practically new battery because they said it tested out fine, which it did at Pauls station as well but it obviously had an issue. Since then I learned how many other things they can do at that station and I'm a huge fan. The station is so compact and clean I didn't think they really worked on cars, but I'm glad I found out that they do. And they have lifts and bays as well as good, practical equipment to work on vehicles, farm equip and just about anything with a problem. You never have to worry about getting ripped off. Make an appt. for an oil change, best deal in town (unless you know something I don't) if you don't change your own oil. We also have a 2015 Ford Mustang GT and a Toyota 4-runner, so they are able to work on any cars. If it is above or beyond what they can do, they will step forward and let you know that as well. For tourists who need fuel for their boats, it is a great location to fuel up as well as picking up some extra for lawnmowers, etc. Handy, neat, practical and not an overwhelming institution. It fits into Joseph without overpowering the community.
