Dr Zia's impatience was unexpected and he was easy to anger. By the end of my appointment, he was back to being kind, but after being belittled and snapped at for an hour, it was too little too late. He would look at his assistant with extreme anger when I had any sort of question about my procedure or expressed my anxieties. When I asked if my symptoms were normal, he angrily replied 'Yes, it is normal that you feel numb. What's not normal is your behavior.' He would snap at me when I didn't open my mouth wide enough. I suppose that training in empathy and communication skills can only go so far when you are simply unpleasant. read more

I am amazed after two root canals how painless and seamless the treatment was. Dr Zia is amazingly kind, friendly and thoughtful. The staff was superb and there was no waiting time. The doctor even arranged his schedule to accommodate me. The experience is quite amazingly efficient and again painless during and after the root canal work. I love to write! Yet, i sat and pondered what words might i use to adequately describe the care i received yesterday from Dr. Zia and his beyond amazing staff. This was not my first visit to this special practice and it's not that i hope to need yet another root canal (i mean who does that?), yet, if i do, in my mind there will be no choice other than Chevy Chase Endodontics. Allow me to explain exactly why. I've been treated over the past several years by both Dr. Farshay AND Dr. Zia. Both are not only experienced and talented Endodontists, they are kind and caring as well. Yesterday, however, my experience with Dr. Zia and his assistant, Sima, was beyond all that. After Dr. Zia and Sima carefully made certain my many allergies were attended to and i was properly "numbed", i started to experience what i would call the beginnings of a "panic attack." Here is where words escape me in trying to explain the incredible understanding and kindness that was shown to me by Dr. Zia. I was fearful i would not be able to go through with the procedure. Dr. Zia totally understood and offered solutions to make me more comfortable and less fearful and told me that if i could not complete the visit, he totally understood and we could schedule it for another day. His understanding along with his suggested solution worked beautifully and i felt calm, less apprehensive and was able to continue with the procedure. All the while he spoke words of comfort interspersed with a bit of humor (which always works for me) and with the competent assistance of Sima, they did it!! How could i not recommend this practice? I am so grateful to Dr. Zia not only for his competence, perhaps even more for the way he cares and comforts. If you are searching for an Endodontist, STOP HERE. There can't possibly be anyone better than Dr. Zia and his partner, Dr. Farshay. I would be remiss if i didn't give a shout out to the staff, all of them extremely competent and caring. Just a really retro & Bad experience. I say retro because it reminded me of being in first grade getting yelled at by the teacher - and also the tiny office is very dated- The dentist Farshey did not listen to me at all and pushed me to undergo a laborious CT scan of my whole mouth. This was the worst- During this process, his assistant took over and barked Orders and criticism at me while I was positioned immobile inside this CT machine in a vise! She barked, "You completely changed your position so I had to retake images!" I was not only unable to move to "change my position" but I was unable to talk back to her bc I had to bite down on an apparatus the entire time. So it amounted to her yelling very loudly and abusively at me and adding extra radiation because she didn't position my head and neck properly the first time! I have Never had a similar experience- she was unbelievably rude and rough - Commando Dentistry much?. To make matters worse, they are doing extensive renovations or repairs of the already very small office, resulting in cluttered "closet-like"spaces and dusty surfaces , and tarps hanging all over! Dr. Farshey was amazing! I was skeptical about retreating my root canal as he suggested but it was the absolutely right thing to do and he did it quickly and masterfully. I would truly recommend him to anyone who is afraid of going to the dentist and who wants an absolute expert to perform the work- painlessly! read more

Good points: 1. I think Dr. Farshey does good work, I had basically no pain after (though I really didn't have pain before the procedure, more just sensitivity). 2. I was able to get in quickly. 3. The dental assistants were great.  4. Office is clean, modern. Bad points: 1. Jennifer at the front desk is so rude. I wanted to make sure my insurance was accepted, so I asked about the insurance, then scheduled. I did make a mistake here, I should have checked with my own insurance first. Realizing my mistake, I looked at my insurance, and they weren't listed. I then called the insurance company to check and, again, no luck. I called Jennifer back to cancel and she was clearly miffed - "I know we work with that insurance, but whatever if you want to cancel I will cancel it". I cancelled. Then, while looking for a new endo, I stumbled upon the same practice, which had the doctor's last name listed as "Farshisheh". I EVEN CALLED THE INSURANCE COMPANY REP TO GET THEM TO FIX IT because that is frankly unfair to the doctor. Then, I called Jennifer back, tried to explain this error and that I had tried to get it fixed, and she totally cut me off before I could get the words out with "I know we work with them. I'm sure of it. So what do you want me to do? Do you want to reschedule?" 2. This place is CRAZY expensive. I did get sucked into the 3d x-ray at $325, BUT it led to a correct diagnosis. Also, I decided to get the nitrous gas, and it was $175. This stuff usually costs between $30 and $100, so I was pretty shocked at that. Additionally, I hit my annual maximum (1700) on ONE TOOTH, plus had a balance due. 3. I wouldn't recommend this guy to people who are hard to numb because he doesn't want to hear about it. I was seen on two visits (yes, he does root canals with two visits. They won't tell you this until you have finished the first one. SURPRISE!!!). The first round of shots were fine, then he left the room. He comes back in, gives me another round of shots and immediately starts drilling. I was in pain and made him stop, and he tried telling me it was just pressure that I felt and that they can't do anything about that, to which I replied that this felt like a pin being stuck through my tooth into my cheekbone. Got a few more shots, then immediately started drilling again. Then, he tells me "you know, I've given you twice the numbing that I give any other patient." I could not care less about what you give others if I can still feel it. 4. I really wouldn't recommend this guy to people with dental anxiety. Y'all, those of us with anxiety are harder to numb, it's a fact. But, when someone doesn't believe you aren't numb, gets annoyed, basically tells you that you are being ridiculous it isn't helpful. To add insult to injury, when we finished the procedure he gave me this talk about how my anxiety was so bad and I needed this prescription next time to calm me. And, I actually got this talk twice, because he came to the front desk with me and mention it again within earshot of other patients. For me, that WAS a good level of anxiety. He was so insistent with the prescription I took it, mostly because I hoped it would keep me from clocking him next time. 5. It was about 3/4 of the way through the procedure before he finally turned up the nitrous enough. For the love of all that is holy PLEASE turn on the gas at a decent level. I've had nitrous before and it doesn't feel like $175 of nothing. 6. On visit 2, I did take the prescription, and it did nothing for me except cost my husband time off of work to drive me. Of course, Dr. Farshey was there to tell me that "I just couldn't tell what it was doing for me." I mean, I can tell when I feel better or worse in the dental chair. At the end of the appointment he asked me how the medicine was during the appointment and when I told him it did nothing he literally stood there and scratched his head. Then he asked me about when I had lunch and blamed it on me having lunch 30 minutes prior to having the pill. 7. When visit 2 was finally over, literally one hour later than the length I was told (and there was no one in the office that day), the dental assistant decided it would be a good time to have a chat with me about "what they can do better next time". She's very sweet, but there is no way in hell I will ever set foot in there again. Here's a thought - talk to patients, and not after all the work is finally done. She revealed they thought it would be a good idea for me to sit in the chair a while before the dentist came in to watch a movie. A 5 minute conversation with me about what gets me so worked up in the dental chair would have revealed that in fact beyond the drilling the worst part of the whole experience for me is sitting still in that chair. I was nervous to get my first root canal today but my entire experience with Dr. Farshay and staff was really excellent. The receptionist and dental assistant were pleasant and supportive. Dr. Farshay was equally personable, frank and thorough in explaining what I should expect during the procedure, as well as throughout the procedure itself. I watched a movie during the drilling, which made the time pass so much quicker! Overall a very positive experience for someone normally terrified at the thought of dental work! read more
