If you ever feel lost in life, just observe a train station for a few minutes. Everyone is lost in life for a little bit, so then...don't feel so bad :) I perched myself at an outside table (there is table service) and after waving the waiter down a few times finally received my cappuccino, complete with the dusting of cocoa powder that seems to coat almost every coffee-laden surface in Switzerland. Cost = 5 CHF. About standard, especially catering to tourists in this location. However, I've had many coffees in Switzerland and most are accompanied by a better assortment of treats. This one was not...minus a star, where's the chocolate Lino!? They also have a small menu of sandwiches/salads, so if you are waiting for a train, or just getting your bearings...just pop across the street and have a coffee or snack, it will be much more relaxing than the train station chaos!

(For those of you who know Chez Panisse in Berkeley, this place is named after the same book & movie character --- there's no close relationship between the restaurants). The lemon crêpe was exactly what you'd hope for --- some sugar (but not too much), plenty of lemon juice, and tender-but-not-soggy base. The aged ham and Nüssli / Lamb's salad crepe with chèvre (the "Mahlgin", perhaps?) was also great --- very fresh salad, savory ham, and creamy goat cheese. By contrast, the "Olive" crepe (after Popeye's girlfriend, not the oil source) seemed to include frozen chopped spinach, canned mushrooms, and far too much canned tomato sauce. The spinach and tomato soaked the crêpe, leaving it soggy. Finally, the service --- I know they're dealing with tourists (who either speak lousy French like us, or no French), but our server managed to be in our face & shouting much of the time, but mysteriously absent when we were trying to pay our bill (one of the kitchen staff tracked her down for us). Cafe le Bonnet Rouge is ideal for a quick lunch given that the seating isn't the most comfortable hanging over an edge on the sidewalk. A few takeaways from our visit: the best salad in town - topped with alfalfa greens- we literally had a salad at almost all of the Gruyeres restaurants ha! Something has to balance out all of that cheese consumption. The double cream here is thicker than the others we experienced and was topped with beautiful fresh raspberries. My husband enjoyed his simple hand sandwich in baguette with small pickles and mustard. Note that they are not open in the morning hours. Located two doors down from the Gruyeres tourism office.

We had a long day ahead of us, so proper breakfast is always good idea - especially when "proper" here means you also get glass of wine or beer - yes, with your breakfast. Coffee? Nonsense. Order glass of wine. Since Gruyères is close to border with France, and French is spoken here more than any other languages, food is influenced by French as well. So we have to order crêpes - of course! (I mean, I cannot resist good crêpe, ever) The crêpe itself is crispy on edges, soft towards center, filled with most delicious creamy swiss chocolate, topped with chocolate shavings - oh, so, sooooo good. But real star of the show was double cream - local specialty I have no seen anywhere else on my travels. This luxurious, not-too-sweet, rich, buttery, silky, creamy & dreamy treat that is out of this world - and probably best thing you ever tasted.
