We stayed in the Madrid Chic & Basic which we loved so we had high hopes for the one in Barcelona. Unfortunately this hotel was anything but chic.
Upon arrival we immediately knew we were in for a rough stay. Our flight arrived at 8 am and after wandering around lost in the heat, we found this tucked away, antiquated hotel. Since were up since 4 am we were extremely tired. When I tried to check in (in Spanish) the woman at the front desk looked at my confirmation and said "It's fine." I stared at her blankly, not understanding, and the guy next to her said very loudly and curtly check in time is at 2pm! Frustrated, we agreed to have them hold our bags while we wandered around. Anyone who's been to Spain will know that nothing opens until 10 am so occupying yourself in the morning is troublesome.
We managed to kill a few hours and returned to the hotel at 1:30pm. We asked if it was possible for us to check in now. Still, the rude old man insisted that check in was at 2. Never in all of my travels have I been to a hotel that would not budge 5 minutes for weary guests. Naturally my husband was irate and tried to reason with him. The desk clerk was adamant and extremely rude. He didn't even look up our room to see if it was ready. Eventually, after some convincing he asked us our name. Magically, in the span of 10 minutes a room was ready (and let's be serious, it was probably ready at 9 am). None of the other staff was much friendlier. No usual front desk cheer, just frowns and attitude.
The hotel itself was just ok. When they said they were in the process of renovating they weren't kidding. The building still looked dated inside and out. The hallways were dingy, the common area antiquated, and even the elevators were the old kind where you have to manually close the door. Luckily we had one of the "modern" rooms which still had an ancient kitchenette and a lot of empty space. But we did have a balcony! The breakfast "buffet" was a joke. It ended at 10:30 and was pretty basic. One kind of cereal, a croissant, some salami, and some juice and coffee. The in room WiFi is ok, but there's no printer in the lobby, so no checking in your flight early.
The location is very convenient to the metro, Las Ramblas, and the beach. The price is decent considering it has a balcony and a kitchenette (both which saved us a LOT of money since we could make food and wash our clothes). But until they renovate and get rid of the staff it is not recommended. They absolutely need to fire every single person there and get some pleasant "chic" and "basic" people in there. You can't be hip and trendy with dour old fools at the reception. read more
