Well organized with wider than typical aisles! Go to this store, and permanent stores like it, before going to the transitory / seasonal Halloween shops. There are at least 2 permanent Halloween / costume stores in this neighborhood. A typical Halloween store will have skinny aisles with messes strategically located within the aisles. Friendly staff and a huge selection - it's kindof like a giant Spirit Halloween, plus some nicer stuff. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because they have some culturally insensitive costumes, most notably the white people in Native American costumes. It's a very large store with a lot of inventory. I looked around, but they didn't have anything that caught my eye. The item that I had stopped here for was one they did have, but the website makes it look better than it is and in person it was pretty terrible and cheap looking and 25 bucks for it so I wasn't going to pay that. Admittedly, though, they do have tons of costumes, makeup, and so on for you to create a fantastic alter ego. Employee was semi helpful, but she seem to be the only one so wasn't able to help much. (It was the day before Halloween.) Their website says they have parking in the back at the Montrose store. I'm not sure where in the back because I went to the back and there was a parking spot beside the one that I was in and then a UPS truck backed into the only exit, which is truly only large enough for a single vehicle (he was inches from the curb on both sides). So I had to wait while the UPS truck picked up a bunch of packages because the entire way was blocked. Luckily, that only took about two minutes, but I still wouldn't park there because who knows how long it might take the next time. There's parking in the front on the street. read more

Not a fan of their new rental policy. It's been years since I've rented, and back then I did small projects and rented extensively. Times are different so I called to check in on rentals, was told rentals moved to Montrose. And that's it, no explanation of their rental policy which is important to know when I went to the Montrose store. I walked in and ask for rentals and was ask if I had an appointment. Nope. No mention of needing an appt, we just used to go into the basement and look through stuff before. Then told me I had to go to the website and fill out the form with measurements etc. and someone will get back to me... but then looked to a co-worker and said "do you want to explain the policy?" and this girl just kind of looked around confused as to where she even was. How can I trust this place? Misinformation and then associates just really not into it. Just sitting there behind the counter. During Halloween. Like, I ran out during my lunch break and had my time wasted. I'll just pay the express fee to get a new costume for a party this wkend, or maybe just recycle an old one. I was really looking forward to getting a costume from them like the old times, some great memories were made. They had a massive selection and were so easy to work with. read more

Horrible place. Overpriced on EVERYTHING. They have a no exchange/refund policy due to the items being seasonal items yet they are open year round and the same items are on sale. If something was a seasonal item it wouldn't be available the following months. They need to revive this policy. I would understand if they had items and didn't the following season but they sell the same items year round. You can find everything in this store on Amazon, Walmart, Target and many other retailers for so much cheaper. This Small business is gouging every customer. Do not support this business. read more

I can be anything I wanna be here...literally! Needed to kill some time and found my way in this awesome costume shop! They have a ton of costumes organized by type, several walls of masks, props, wigs, etc. They even have professional costumes that you can rent upstairs. This place is huge and is a one stop shop. Prices were pretty reasonable and depends on the quality of the costume that you want. The girls that worked there checked up on me to see if I was okay and needed help. Very friendly, warm, and inviting. Whenever I am in need to play dress-up I'll definitely be back here! Now I know where to go! read more

The place can get pretty overwhelming with the amount of masks, make-up, costumes, wigs/facial hair, and accessories that they have. My friend and I stopped by to get a masquerade mask for a party, and the variety was just too crazy! If you cannot find anything that catches your fancy, you can also have things custom-made for you! Large selection of domino/lace/feather/bedazzled masks (well, it's near Mardi Gras). Small but mighty stage makeup section; includes Graftobian as well as Mehron/Ben Nye and has a clearance section of discontinued colors (this never happens). Up front is a "make your own flapper headband" station; I didn't, but what a cool idea. The costumes are about 90% costumes-in-a-bag, but they include some higher-end ones (which yes, means paying real prices), including some licensed Disney costumes and high-quality knockoffs. Carries at least some plus sizes. Mixed in with the costumes-in-a-bag are a few higher quality items, such as mail shirts. Stocking selection and some medium-sized feather carnival / showgirl masks (sequin/coque/ostrich); excellent selection of burlesque mini-tophats (gold sequin!) and a small crown section. They don't have beaded bras but do have a few not-terribly sparkly bellydancer beaded caps and some of the faceted-metallic plastic bead shimmy belts, and let's face it, most costume stores don't even HAVE an Egyptian section. Didn't spend much time with the wigs, but they had a good selection. Helpful staff and parking's not too bad (prowl the side streets). read more

So, I usually don't post "consumer complaint" posts, but I thought that my many theatre friends should know about this. Last week, we were having trouble finding glow face paint. I found some on Chicago Costume's website. The product info said it was good, and I called and the employee said it was good. I drove the 90 minute round trip to pick it up. First of all, I was in the store a good 10 minutes and no employee was to be found. I walked around the store and could find no one. I was almost ready to just take the paint and leave, since I had been waiting for so long in what seemed to be an empty store, but my morals said not to do that. Finally, someone came out. I confirmed with her this was the paint I was looking for. She asked if i wanted to test it, and I said yes. But the only place we could test it was a semi dark room where I could only get about 2 feet away, so this didn't give much of a test. Well, it didn't work at all. So today, I went back to return it (another 90 minute round trip) and was told they don't give refunds but she would check with the manager. I explained I bought the paint because the employee recommended it to me. She went to the manager and came back saying she couldn't give me a refund but would give a store credit. I asked to talk to the manager. So the manager came out and the first thing she said was "I assume you read the receipt." I again told her the website said it was a good product and that the employee recommended it to me and said it would work. All she said was I could get a credit but they don't give refunds. This was for $18. Looks like its Fantasy Costume or some other supplier in the future. read more

After a horrible experience at Party City, Chicago Costume was a godsend. You would not know that this is a costume store from its outside appearance. When you go inside, it is a verifiable wonderland of costume. Yes, Halloween costumes are pricey, but you do receive service here. They also have items that you may not see anywhere else. The staff worked with me to find an awesome Jessica Rabbit costume and even gave me a discounted price! There is a rental division. I have not personally used it but have known people who have. They have told me that they are completely satisfied. read more

If you get scared off by the rental prices(or hey, the crowds) of Fantasy Costumes, this is a good backup option to look for a costume, or bits and pieces for one if you go the route of hitting a couple different stores like I did. They didn't have as many options as Fantasy(very obviously), but their selection was still pretty darn good. I ended up going the route of going to a few different stores(thrift and costume ones), to find the pieces I needed to do a Simpsons costume last year. Of course this store isn't 24/7 on the week before Halloween(and up to) a la Fantasy, but they do extend their daily hours somewhat during the month of October. This is also one of their 2 year round stores, with the other one on Fullerton across from DePaul's campus. Don't forget to go upstairs to look at the additional suits, dresses, and etc. there, if you don't find at first what you're looking for on the first floor. Glad an employee told me they had more stuff, up there. Very accessible from both the Kennedy Expwy., Metra(Mayfair on the Fox Lake/Milwaukee District North Line), Montrose Blue Line, and 3 CTA bus routes(78, 54, and 54A during weekday rush hours). Parking is very easy too if you drive. Either on Montrose(limited, and I sometimes see spaces on that street fill up), but if not, you'll absolutely for sure find a free space along Knox Ave south of Montrose(aka the north/south street inbetween both Metra tracks). When you see the length(!) of that street surrounded by industrial buildings going all down that street, you'll see what I mean when you park on Knox. read more

So this place is great! Me and 3 of my friends just went spur of the morning on Halloween, not knowing what we were going to be. We ended up seeing a bunch of good options on the first floor, but on the second floor they even had rentals of awesome costumes. We found our mariachi costumes, and with the help of the staff, we were fully set-up in hardly no time. Everything is reasonably prices too. Great selection, super customer service and cheaper costumes than Fantasy Costume. Last weekend my friend and I came here to try on costumes because we planned on sharing a costume. She's 6ft and I'm 5ft. Candace greeted us and, helped us find a costume that fit and looked great on both of us. Candace was very attentive and provided us with many ideas and was all around very helpful and knowledgeable. Candace also allowed me to try on some blue make-up samples and showed me how to apply and layer the FX makeup and Mehron. This is a good location because it has fitting rooms, plenty of costumes and wide aisles with workers who are very willing to help. Needed a last minute (10/29) item and ordered it online for pickup at Fullerton store, while the process for this is a bit broken, the way it was handled is why I'm writing this review. I spoke with staff at the store three different times. The first time was to learn about the products they carried and this was a great experience. The person on the phone took the time to educate me on options. The second two calls were regarding the online order. Each time the staff were friendly, professional and accommodating. I'm a non-traditional student who likes to write period films. My outfits must be true to the period of the storyline. A segment of my film dealt with ancient horseman, swords, capes, chain-maile, helmets... This place (fullerton store) has the best assortment of intricate swords. I needed a sword to look special not typical. I am pleased. I also needed a few garments that were not as pristine but could look like a period of famine (I didn't have time to distress garments) so I went to their MONTROSE location, and the help went through the racks and found fabulous layers to piece together an 1800's outfit (oh yeahhh-rockin) (very nice people at montrose). the inventory is endless, and you get a garment bag to carry your items. It's FULLY PACKED WALL-TO-WALL with cool stuff that you'll need to pull-off that party in glory! And parking is still very reasonable/ FREE. I received 'soft and easy, non-annoying' help right away in order to hunt down the "perfect get-up"......NICE, because I wouldn't want to do it alone (way too much stuff to comb through for me). Oh Yeah, the prices are competitive, but get-this.....sometimes you can negotiate your deal, which makes this place SUPER and NOT one of those heartless robot corporate stores where it's "their-way or the high-way". NO... Not this store. Chicago Costume Warehouse does business in a compassionate human-being fashion like needed and happy decades ago, before cyborg corporations became a norm. I know this is hard for today's young people (DOB after 1980) to digest and who have grown up in America's strict, non-price budging / caring, suck-hole, greedy corporate dominated market environment where high-six, seven, eight digit income CEO's need / pry-out more and more money from you, but yes.... there's a store where YOU can still possibly negotiate your own reasonable purchase price. Okay, this place is just awesome. The people in there are seriously the nicest people ever. I have been to other places and I'm not even allowed to try anything on whereas, at this place, they want you to know you like something for sure before you go home. I got lost the first time I went there and had to call the people to give me directions from the highway--they were nothing but helpful and didn't seem at all annoyed at my request. Also--holy cow--this place is pretty big. When I first walked in, it looked tiny, and then I turned the corner and saw how big it was--costumes galore! I will never ever ever purchase or rent a costume or prop from anyone else again - Chicago Costume is the BEST!!! I have purchased both Halloween and party costumes, but have also used them for many shows that my non-profit organizations have had. The owners and staff are wonderful, extremely helpful, their prices are much better than anywhere else - they have also bent over backwards to find things that I needed last minute and quickly shipped items when my shows were out of town. Beware! I think this place has a great selection however if you purchase a costume from these people make sure that you try it on before leaving the store. My husband purchase a Benjamin Franklin costume and spent over $100.00 for the grand opening of his bank's branch. He requested an X-LARGE but when they went to try on, the vest was obviously a SMALL & labeled incorrect as rest of the items fit appropriately. When he returned to the store for an exchange ONLY and explained that there was no way the vest was an extra large, they would not exchange it for a different one. It gets better...the guy wanted him to spent an additional $16.00 for another vest that fits. I understand...people nowadays like to return items for cash after being used, but this was not the case. The intent wast to purchase good quality costume in an extra large size so that the bank can get a good amount of use out of it. No "Thanks" to Chicago Costume Company but I think we will take our business somewhere else. read more

Super helpful staff. It is pre-Halloween craziness, but every employee I saw helping a customer was very eager to help find the perfect item. We went in specifically for pokeballs, but spent an hour just wandering through the store. They really seemed to have every genre covered. In the past I've always been to chain shops, and while Chicago Costume is locally a chain, it has a great selection. I was in there tonight, unsure of what I needed for a zombie costume and not only did they help me get what I want, they showed me how to use the make up and gave me take home directions as well. The selection was good and when I was looking for a particular item, they called around to try & find it for me. Found at another Chicago Costume location for cheaper than Halloween Express.
