From the very beginning, Lorna was incredibly supportive, attentive, and detail-oriented. We had originally planned on hiring a babysitter for 2 days on our trip to Kauai, but after we arrived, our 2 year old was very clingy and I was hesitant to leave him. We found childcare Kauai when our plans to bring our nanny with us on our trip fell through. Vacationing with our 2.5 and 4.5 year old around pools and the ocean was pretty stressful the first day when we didn't have help. With two young kids prone to run in various directions around slippery pool decks, waves, rocks, etc., I found it completely impossible to relax. Always on alert, always grabbing a kid from killing themselves. And also getting nap trapped in the room for hours mid day. Lorna was our sitter for 4 days starting with day 2, and she completely changed the vibe of the trip for us. Each day she came in with toys, books, bananas, and other treats for the kids. She was so kind and attentive. Each day she provided a much needed sun break for my 4.5 year old playing and reading books while my 2.5 year old napped in the hotel room. Then joined us with both kids at the pool for more play time. Although we were never far, it gave us the ability to relax a bit and know there was an extra pair of hands and eyes helping keep them safe and occupied/entertained. My daughter would excitedly ask for her every morning, "Is Miss Lorna coming today?!" and willingly leave the pool to take her brother in for her nap while she played with Miss Lorna mid afternoon. Lorna is amazing! She's so communicative and we were so appreciative of the babysitter (Hannah) that she coordinated for us for two different days at our hotel in Lihue. Hannah brought toys and books for our almost 3YO son and they also played in the pool. She kindly left the toys and books overnight since she was watching our son again along with our 7.5YO daughter the next day. We were shocked and horrified by the day that our 14 month old son had with ChildCare Kauai. We wanted to spend the day hiking, so we hired a sitter to take care of our son at the condo we were renting. We often use different sitters in San Francisco, so we figured that things would go smoothly. The sitter came, and let us know she wasn't able to pick up our son - we were surprised this hadn't been shared earlier as our son does like to be held, but we figured it'd probably be fine. Fastforward to the afternoon, the sitter called us and let us know that our son had been crying all day. For that, we don't fault her - it's hard to predict how a little kid will react to a new caretaker in a less familiar environment (though frustrating she hadn't told us she couldn't pick him up in advance). But we were shocked when we learned more. 1) We came home and our son was shut into a non-child-proofed room plastered against the door (the door was clouded glass) sobbing. There were uncovered outlets and sharp objects in the room. The sitter was sitting out of view from him on the other side of the next room. She said that she had tried leaving him alone there for much of the afternoon, thinking he might calm down / sleep (we had told her that he only sleeps when with others). It is unacceptable and abusive to leave a 14 month old awake, alone, and unrestrained for hours in a non-child-proofed room. 2) The sitter told us that she hadn't given him anything to eat or drink. All day. She figured he was too upset, but of course he gets very upset when hungry / thirsty. Also abusive behavior. 3) The sitter showed him videos on her phone - like most parents, we don't allow screens for our son at this age (we had let the sitter know). 4) I called Childcare Kauai and shared the feedback. After being a bit defensive, they agreed that the care was unacceptable and agreed to take actions with the sitter and refund my payment. Despite several follow ups, they have not followed through on either commitments. That's great that many people have had positive experiences, but it's not worth the risk. read more

We had the BEST experience! Our nanny was Lorna and she was amazing! She watched out 3 kids ages 6, 4 & 4 months. Lorna was our baby whisperer. She brought toys and books and was responsive by text, giving us updates through out the day. She had a quiet, sweet demeanor and our little 23 month-old adored her. We felt safe leaving our baby in her care. My only complaint is that she was late (5-10 minutes) two out of the three times she came to care for our toddler. I had given us a 30 minute window so it wasn't an issue for us, but before you book, consider telling her she needs to be there before she actually needs to be there. I think it's a Hawaiian thing as we ran into this a lot on the island . . . so be prepared that time works differently in Kauai than on the mainland. She was as kind as can be, very patient and sweet with our three-year old son, and went above and beyond... she came with multiple bags full of books and toys every night she babysat -- she was incredibly flexible and reliable, and we were just so relieved someone so great was available. We had a great experience with Lorna. This is the company that the Grand Hyatt recommends and I spoke with both the reception and concierge desks about their knowledge on this company. They had nothing but positive things to say, and offered other feedback from previous guests. I contacted the owner who put me in touch with Lorna. Lorna contacted me in a timely manner, sharing about herself. A mother of 3 grown children, the length of her childcare experience, etc. We had her come for a few hours in the afternoon, she was very flexible and arrived with a TON of great toys, my 3yo son ran to her right away! Within 15 min of saying goodbye she texted a picture and report on how the transition went. She continued to text at appropriate intervals with updates. When we returned my son was happy as a clam. Lorna's demeanor is calm, soft, and attentive. She spoke to my son like he was an actual human being vs. like "she is the adult and he is the child" type of vibe. I saw that she could connect with him immediately. We wanted to use her again but our schedules didn't sync up as she is was so busy with other bookings! That's said, Lorna tried really hard to accommodate us with another booking but our schedule was too complicated. We would have booked here without a doubt if we had the chance! We went to Kauai last December with our two year old daughter. Because we wanted to go scuba diving we had to find a sitter and we found the best. Terrie watched out little one every day for a week. My family and I stayed at a vacation rental near Kapaa with a pool. My husband and I have always wanted to kayak on the Wailua river and wouldn't be able to take our three young daughters, ages 6, 3, and 2. I contacted Terrie through her website and was pleased with the quick response and flexibility.
