I went one time with my 11 and 12 year-olds. We haven't gone back. They went for a cleaning. The hygienists were kind and talked with them about kid stuff - the usual. The dentist (I forget her name), however, was a bit condescending and overbearing. One of my girls needed a cavity filled. The dentist suggested anesthesia and gas. And that's when I decided they might be a bit too aggressive for us. We've only ever had to use topical anesthesia. read more

I wish I could say better things. My daughter had good experiences doing cleanings. No cavities for 8 years, so we had really good visits. Until she needed work done. They wouldn't sedate her... and she was screaming the entire time. I was in the room and I watched them inject her with several needles that she clearly felt. Followed by very aggressive drilling, and opening her mouth with clamps. She told them it was pinching her lip and they disregarded her... Her face is still healing after a week. They had five staff in there holding her down, and she was crying so hard that it was obvious her nose was stuffed, so she couldn't even breathe in the nutritious. They did two crowns and 4 fillings in one very aggressive visit. And one of the crowns is dug into her gums and cut. At one point I stopped the procedure and told them enough... At which point the dentist told me we cannot stop the procedure because then she will think she can stop anytime! They tortured her and now she is rightfully afraid of the dentist. Find another dentist. There's no reason she had to go thru that. I will never go back there and never recommend them. read more

Since they so graciously deleted my first review, I'd figured I would leave yet another one to warn parents. I'll leave one on yelp too because you people can't delete it there. :) My son has a speech delay. The assistant told me he was due for X-rays, they had TWO assistants try and hold my son down for X-rays. I told her we're done after my son was freaking out, screaming and crying. The main dentist came in and suggested we use a papoose BOARD to strap my child down on. Doing just minimal research, this is used ONLY in situations where the dentist staff or child's safety is at risk. So, traumatize my kid in sake of X-rays!? Lol gtfo. After I told her absolutely not, she kept yapping about how important X-rays are. Belittling me and questioning my parenting. HA! I'm questioning your empathy and professionalism (or lack there of) Perhaps work somewhere with ADULTS. This is the worst dentist I've ever taken my kids to. None of the "professionals" know how to speak to young kids, especially ones with disabilities. Absolutely disgusting behavior. read more

I gave two stars because of the experience and effort of the hygienist. I brought my two year old for her appointment. It was going smooth with the hygienist she was very kind to my child and helped do fun little things to soothe her into getting her fluoride treatment. My daughter did cry but she was patient and helped make it easy for me as well. Unfortunately I wish the rest of the appointment went smoother. I had to wait 30 minutes with my two year old before seeing the dentist. Anyone that has or had a two year old understand how hard it is to entertain a toddler and keep them calm . So the dentist came in and my daughter was obviously tired of being in the room and did not handle it well when she proceeded to look in her teeth. The lady dentist showed slight frustration with me because she was not cooperating. Her little attitude and obvious frustration was enough to make adifficult situation even worse. She tried to slap a happy face on but I could feel her energy. Then it was over and she was out of the room on a flash. Unfortunately I plan on not coming back with the inconsistent staff mainly speaking to the dentist. read more

The first visit went ok. They had a problem with their equipment malfunctioning and spray water all over the ground. Stuff happens. I get it. The dentist tells me my daughter had two cavities. One on an adult tooth, one on a baby tooth... So when we came in to get those fillings done, then they mention a third cavity in another baby tooth... They NEVER MENTIONED A 3RD TOOTH. The dentist let me know that I signed a paper that listed the 3 fillings... I must've not looked at the paper close enough because she literally went over it with me right before signing it.. And no talk of a 3rd tooth was had... She also began to let me know us parents often forget what they are told or don't listen... EXCUSE ME?! Needless to say I walked out and decided to get a second opinion because they are not to be trusted! read more

My special needs child and mother was not treated with respect or kindness. My child has Cerebral Palsy severely disabled non-verbal child. We called the Hazel Park location and scheduled detailed appointment. They need to understand how much trouble it takes to prepare a severely disabled child for a routine office visit. My mother helps me with her and my infant. I work two jobs, so my mother steps in to help. I was so hurt behind how this place treated my handicapped child and my mother that had missed worked to support me. Shame on you guys. Shame!!!! read more

I have to up my review here. My daughter fell off her bike on a Sat, ended up in the ER and also broke her tooth. They took my husband's emergency call while my daughter and I were in the ER. They took her 8am on Monday. She was scared and in pain due to other injuries. Dr. Ify was patient, kind and did a great job. I couldn't thank her more. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR TODDLERS HERE!!!! I had the worst experience and I'll be looking to see who I can contact to report this facility. My almost 3 year old had two cavity's and we went in for the procedure where they told my husband that he would be gassed and wrapped in a blanket. We waited 40 min before we got in. I take my son back and there are 4 people in a tiny room. They ask my to lay him down on a baby board in which they strap his hands down and then strap his whole body down (this is what was referred to as a "blanket" to my husband. My son is screaming for me to get him out. They throw the gas over his nose and IMMEDIATELY start putting tools in his mouth. They don't give him a chance to even inhale the gas. They then asked me to step out to which I refused. I started asking why they aren't giving him a second to inhale the gas and to stop putting tools in his mouth and let him calm down first. They all insisted that this is normal and that children his age scream cry the entire time. I then asked why they even give them gas and they just kept saying well he's crying so he's not inhaling it. Well ya he's crying!!...they didn't even give him a chance to inhale anything!! The doctor then told me I don't know who you talked to but the gas does not make a child not scream or cry. I said then he's not doing this and made him unstrap him and walked out. As they were unstrapping the doctor said that there was no need for me to be rude and she is trying to help... My child screaming and crying in a restraint while you give him a shot and work on his teeth is NOT helping me. That is NOT normal procedure and when I called another place to ask them what they do, they told me thjey let him inhale for 10 min and use nothing to hold them down. Stay away! Seriously. First, they didn't have one of my two children on the schedule for his appointment even though they took all his information over the phone. Also over the phone I was told both of my kids first exams would be free and that they took our insurance. Neither of those were true. The office staff were chaotic and coming in the room every 2 minutes to tell me things like "the cleaning we're doing on your child right now that we told you would be included actually costs full price and we don't take your insurance". NOT TO MENTION the whole reason we went was for concerns with my one year old's new teeth and the dentist literally...I mean literally looked at them for ONE second. They tried to do a cleaning on her as well but she wouldn't cooperate and they still charged me full price. I hate this place. Find somewhere to bring your little ones, trust me! read more

This was my son's second opinion/treatment appointment. His previous pediatric dentist told me that my son needed 6crowns and two fillings and We had to wait one month to get him treated. After his previous office tried to reschedule his appointment another month out, I made appointment here. I am so glad I did it. He got the same day treatment and it turned out that he only needed 2 crowns and 6fillings. Dentist here may be very straightforward and it seems like she offended some parents here in Yelp. However, she got the jobs done. I can tell that she is very competent dentist. I would rather take straightforward honest competent dentist than smooth talking over treating dentist. I will definitely take both of my sons here until they 18. read more

I really hope ALL the parents read my review before taking their kids to children dental. It will save you alot of pain, seeing your child treated miserably - not on one occasion but twice. So it's every parent nightmare to take their young ones to the dentist, even us as adults cringe on the thought of going to get our teeth cleaned or cavity removed. So just imagine, how scared the kids would be to go to the dentist for their checkup. Yesterday, when I took my daughter there, I was told that she has cavity and needs crown on her moral, and root canal on the second tooth - as a parent, off course we had questions and concerns. My husband wanted to talk to the doctor - Dr. Kamil , so that he can provide him the details of the procedure that will happen on my daughter. That doctor, took our request on his ego. He said: you don't think I am capable of performing this, I have done this procedure numerous times, you are judging my credentials. We tried to calm him down, and said that we are just doing our job as mom & dad, there's no reason for you to feel offended. We know you are qualified for this job, but this is our daughter's first time, and she's scared. We are just asking you to explain the procedure to us, that's all. Dr kamil was getting annoyed second by second by my daughter, he was NOT making her feel comfortable - he just cared about doing the job, not about my daughter - who was completely frightened. Dr.kamil told me that I'm already putting up with your daughter, now I have to put up with you too. I am done doing this, you can go to another Doctor and he left. I felt so disrespected, so humiliated, and so bad for my daughter who was left in the middle of her procedure - she had to go through all the pain & torture for nothing. Dr kamil doesn't deserve to be part of the children dental family, after what he did to us - I really want the owner to take some actions against him. read more

I have three kids and they all came here for a while. The wait is pretty average, appointments aren't too bad. Prices seem high, even with insurance. And they don't seem so patient, don't explain things and do not offer reassurance for kids so they feel more comfortable. Won't be coming back and found a practice that my kids absolutely have no problems with. So happy I changed. read more

I am so glad I brought my 11yr old daughter to this dentist office. We had an horrible experience at a "chain" dentist office and requested recommendations of where to go. I was told to Children's Dental Specialists is where I should go. When we arrived, there wasn't a long wait time. The lobby had activities for the kids to do which is a plus! Once we were called, the assistant Shawntell C. was absolutely phenomenal!!! She was so kind & patient. My 11yr old daughter asked her questions she had no issues with addressing them. My son accompanied us to this appointment. He is 5 and has autism. He was being an extreme busybody however Shawntell & Dr. Merril assisted me with him while still staying on track with my daughter . Dr. Merril addressed answered EVERY question which made me comfortable! My experience at the other chain dentist office made me on pins and needles. I stood in the hallway and watched how the entire office operated with other children (patients) and I was impressed!!!! Dr. Ily came in and took such wonderful care of my daughter dental work! The biggest compliment came from my daughter saying " Mom, I didn't feel a thing. I was so relaxed!" Please understand she had 3 extractions! Because of my experience at this office, The Children's Dental Specialists will be seeing my other children for their dental needs. They even have experience in workings with patients who have autism!! This is a HUGE plus in my book!!! They're the real champions here!!!! read more

We took our child here a few time she received 2 spacers and a crown all of which Fell out. I took her to a different dentist today and found out they used her one and only chance to get her teeth sealed on her baby teeth. I took my son there a few days ago. The staff was great. She was as nice as she could be. And they were great with my son, who doesn't like dentist. But, at the end she did not show him how to properly brush his teeth or how to floss. I had to ask her to show him how to brush. This kind of service why I took him to a Pediatric dentist. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this place and how thankful I am. My 7 year old special needs girl had a bad fall and no other dentist have never been able to touch her for even simple check up. The staff and the doctor were so understanding and helpful and took care of the issue the same day. They were telling everything they were doing and were so gentle with my baby girl. We've been here multiple times and have never had an issue, the last time we brought our 3 year old son here to have his teeth filled.. was an awful experience. They called us back, I told the dental assistant that my husband went out to the car real quick and asked her if she could send him back when he comes back in. No response... okay, someone must be having a bad day. She doesn't say a word to me but grabs the weighted restraint and puts it over my child in the chair. Doesn't explain the procedure or what's about to happen or anything. My child starts getting restless, rather than try to talk to him and calm him down (like I was) she aggressively grabbed him and tried forcing him down and covered his mouth so he would breathe in the laughing gas. The amount of force the assistant used on my child made me sick. The doctor came in and was SO much gentler and she was very sweet. I wish I would've asked the assistant her name and reported her. We will never come back here. Do some research and find a more caring place to take your children to. read more

Hazel Park Location (affiliated with Troy location) Terrible in too many ways. Advertised doctor is not there so don't bother researching. Took my 6 year old in for a cleaning - there was not a hygienist and when I asked the dentist when they would clean my son's teeth and he claimed he already did (he had only spent 5 minutes with him) - THEN they tried to force me into x-rays that my son had had too recently at his last dentist and they wouldn't be covered (I had explained that to them and was told that I told the wrong office - however their office didn't have an listed phone number). My son then received sealants with little explanation describing them & it was torturous. I had to intervene several times for him to get a break. I could have never gone through what my child went through. Video games in the lobby don't make the place worth. Not a single staff member was child-friendly and there was an over an hour wait because of a printer problem that they didn't not apologize for or explain. EVERY child in the place that was a patient was SCREAMING. I'm honestly emotionally damaged from the experience. I will not be returning. read more

I was excited to take my children to the dentist especially my toddlers first time seeing one, but after today's appointment I will not be going back. The facility looked clean the receptions was nice. The children's waiting area didn't have much to entertain them for being a pediatric dentistry . We then were called in I do agree with the previous reviewer the doctor was aggressive with the children on cleaning their teeth. What really drew the last straw was when the assistant forced an x-ray tool in my toddlers mouth to the point that he threw up. I was so bothered from it I asked to not try it again. The doctor immediately came in and assisted cleaning my son up and asked if I usually carried extra clothes with me also if he had a snack earlier. YES HE'S A TODDLER HE EATS AND WHO DOESN'T CARRY EXTRA CLOTHING FOR A TODDLER?? BUT I DID NOT EXPECT MY CHILD TO THROW UP AT THE DENTIST! I was so disturbed and traumatized from the experience I couldn't get out any faster they then tried bribing the children with toys after the unprofessional service. I do not recommend this dentist to any child. Definitely will be more careful selecting my children's future dentist. read more
