After completing a form we were notified only via email that they do not treat children with Autism and it's related neurological challenges such as ADHD or PICA. We took our son there and he was not diagnosed properly and then took our daughter (before we realize the error with our son) and she was tested NOT to have ADHD which jeant we couldn;t get help for her... after a year we took her to another agency (Cascadia Consulting - we love them) she tested HIGH in range and is now getting help she needed. Would not recommend at all. Testing only confirmed things I already told them. Nothing was gained. When trying to follow up with a couple questions after being cut short on our appointment explaining the results, I was told they can't answer questions. I need to book an appointment so I could be charged. I didn't need an hour, I needed the answer the few questions I had on the original appointment. Then we attempted medication for ADHD and it went terribly. Even I know you don't start with stimulants when a child has severe anxiety. I couldn't always reach someone when needing to check in about symptoms trying medications. Waste of time and money. Oh, and two years later, I'm STILL dealing with them. I keep receiving bills for services I already paid for and we haven't been back. I got confirmation from them that "oh sorry, you're right and you did pay it." I have been going here since June 2021 for my son. My 3 stars is less a weighed score on the two services I came here for my 5 year old son (Speech Therapy and ADHD) Speech Therapy Ranking - 5 Stars If I were to rank the clinic solely on speech therapy, I would give it 5 stars easily! The speech pathologist Christine Moore does an excellent job working with my son and being successful over zoom(which can be challenging). She keeps parents involved and informed in the sessions and treatment for language challenges. Its easy to see she has passion for her profession and truly cares and wants to help others. ADHD Ranking 2 Stars I was less than satisfied with the services relating to ADHD. The onboarding Doctor and Psychologist I worked with made it seem like medication was a promising solution and was need to help my son focus. However, it felt like they flipped flopped and changed their minds about medication ever being an option. Unless your child is a harm to themselves, you are unlikely to receive treatment for ADHD. I understand the reason for their strict guidelines around treating ADHD, but I think there are cases where it can really be beneficial to children even if they are not a harm to themselves(blindly running into the street ext....). This is an ongoing process so I will provide updates as I continue to work with them. The more outside perspectives you can provide of your childs challenges the stronger your case will be. All that being said, I would highly recommend you give them a chance and see for yourself. For speech therapy, this is the place to be! I was skeptical about speech therapy having had bad experience prior. But Christine Moore has brought back my faith in it. read more

I wandered over to Yelp after my experience with this program and was both disappointed and validated to see others have had similar experiences. This prompts me to share in the hopes that other families can be fully informed before seeking care here. We attempted to get our child tested here last year for a couple of concerns. The intake process was very lengthy, complicated, unfriendly and confusing, and did not offer much in terms of meaningful and compassionate guidance. I was left with the distinct sense that getting treatment here is a privilege and we should be grateful for the opportunity to be considered. Nevertheless, we went ahead with the paperwork and had a required parent-only intake meeting onsite, which was a huge investment of time off work, with most of the time spent waiting in the chaotic waiting room and a very brief consult with a doctor. We didn't really understand the point of the entire meeting, which could have been easily accomplished via phone. After that, we had to cancel an initial assessment appointment because my child woke up vomiting on the day of the appointment. I let the office know via voicemail and email, and tried to follow up with the intake person via email and voicemail to get rescheduled. I never received a response, so we pursued part of my child's testing through the public schools. I recently circled back with them to address one aspect of my child's testing not addressed by the public school program, and received a very unfriendly reply which 1) stated that I would have to start the intake process all over again from square one to be considered, 2) accused me of missing an appointment with no explanation (false) and 3) accused me of cancelling an appointment with less that 24 hours (yes, I explained my child was vomiting and tried to follow up to reschedule with no response). While the doctors here may be great (I can't say since we never made it that far), the gate keepers of the program make the experience of trying to get your child help complicated and painful. Maybe this program is so overwhelmed with patients that they intentionally make new families run the gauntlet to narrow down the field to what they can manage. I don't know. Either way, I can't say that I would recommend this program to anyone caught in the already emotionally difficult position of trying to get help for their child. read more

A coworker referred us to this clinic to help my daughter work through some things happening in her life. The clinician was very nice and my daughter liked her (the second clinician, the first one was okay but not a great fit). We have since moved on after the treatment I received from the billing person and office manager. I had questions about their billing practices and was immediately met with rude and unprofessional behavior by the staff, specifically the billing person. I asked repeatedly for someone to call me and discuss the matter and they declined to discuss with me (the office manager did call and leave a voicemail but when I tried calling back she then refused to speak with me). I questioned a negligible $1 per transaction fee that was being charged for every time they ran my card on file (which they charged at will, no real logical method of how and when they run the charges). I felt the fee was unnecessary and told them I could pay them by check to avoid the fee. They informed me they do not accept checks. There was a $40 fee they charged which I refused to pay without their first billing to my insurance. They told me that the charge was not billable to insurance and I was responsible directly. Again, refusing to discuss with me over the phone. I did attempt to discuss the situation with our clinician realizing that put her in a tenuous position so I tread gently on that aspect. Our clinician said that she appealed to the office manager and billing person but they were adamant that I owe what they say I owe and that I could go elsewhere for help. So, if your child need to see a professional for any reason, I highly recommend staying away from this practice. I do not want any other family to be treated how we have been treated. There really should be an option for giving someone 'negative' stars. This business and more specifically Dr. Turner, deserve a negative rating. I wish that more people would review doctors. It would have been so helpful to have had the information that I'm providing here to you. I was in need of a child psychiatrist for my son. Our previous doctor closed his practice and with the few pediatric psychiatrists that are in business and the fewer number that are on my insurance, I had little choice but The Children's Program. After making our first consultation appointment, I was told not to bring my son. The doctor wanted to meet with my husband and I alone first. My husband requested a sign language interpreter. Almost immediately they called to ask me why I couldn't "sign" for him. I explained that it would be hard for me to stay separate from the conversation and at the same time be expected to be involved as a parent. The woman on the phone said, "well, okay, if you refuse to do it, I guess we can find someone." Well, these people may not know the law, but they are required to provide these services. I told them I would find the interpreter, but they would need to book the services. The first appointment was kind of chaotic because my mother in law had the wrong time for the appointment and was late meeting us to take our kids. He was blunt and kind of gruff and I wasn't really sure that I would be returning, but we had little choice. So at the end of the appointment, I made a second one, with the interpreter checking her schedule so we could coordinate schedules easier. Due to unforeseen issues (my son being hospitalized and then having to go pick him up), I was unable to make an appointment and was told the doctor would charge me $130 for being a no-show. I asked my husband to go for me so we would only have to pay the copay. The doctor was irked and called the interpreter several times, thinking she had forgotten the appointment. She didn't. Because I didn't call her. The doctor was visibly irritated that he had to muddle through an appointment without the aid of the interpreter and told me so. I explained that I would not pay $130 for no services, so that's why my husband came. Again, very arrogant and controlling and commented that they only had about 15 minutes of productivity. Good. I got my money's worth. He started out by directing everyone where to sit. He did not understand a deaf person's needs at all, nor did he care to understand. And when I tried to explain that the interpreter needed to sit next to him and my husband across, he said that didn't work for him. He needed his line of sight in a certain direction (he couldn't give up control.) It didn't matter to him that my husband would have to look in two different directions. He needed his papers on his desk and didn't want to face a different way. The whole meeting was spent telling me how horrible my child was. How not normal his behavior was at the hospital. How, even though I was a saint (this was said sarcastically), even I could not do everything he needed. He also made comments about the doctors that had treated my son. He said the doctor at the hospital (Emanuel) just made up diagnoses to fit what he wanted. And about our psychiatrist for four years was just throwing darts and didn't really know what he was doing. If you want to be belittled, angered, annoyed, and put down, by all means, go here. I cannot believe that he is still in business and that people put up with this behavior. I fail to see how a doctor can display so little concern for a family in crisis or is allowed to continue to practice. read more

If the information was documented correctly, maybe they would get a better review from me. We had a one time appointment per child welfare request. My grandchildren were removed from their parents care due to severe abuse. Its important to accurately document what a parent and child report. Otherwise, it skews the whole process for other organizations, such as CPS, medical, other counselors, the DA to prosecute the perp! Parents, guardians, caretakers of your kids, be fore warned, review your children's records; it's crucial. Otherwise, the folks at The Children's Program were very cordial. read more

I have two reviews. I go to Ally Burr-Harris. I have been going to her for probably 8 years. And I love her. I am 18 now and I am still going to her. She has helped me so much through everything I have gone through. She cares about me and my situation. I would recommend her. She is very professional and she is confidential. But she knows when you need help and if she needs to share it with your parents she will. At first it made me mad because I wanted everything to be kept a secret but in the end I am happy she did because it made me take accountability for my actions. Now on the other hand there is Dr. Turner. I don't have much to say about him. He doesn't really care he keeps you on the same medication and then if something is wrong with you he ups the dose and moves you along. I would not go to him. He didn't help me what so ever and I didn't see that until I moved to a need doctor that actually helps me and knows that I need. So I would give him a one star because he is not anything above that. read more

Dr. Bianco has a great depth of knowledge and gives our family both understanding and practical solutions. I feel very fortunate to have been matched with this provider. A colleague of mine had her daughter evaluated and counseled here recently and had good things to say. I called to schedule an appointment for my son, who needs help, and was basically told to go elsewhere. The person making appointments also told me that my desired therapist had "not been taking new patients for years," even though my colleague's daughter had gotten in a few months ago. I have had only wonderful experiences here. Many of the poor reviews were posted several years ago, and so maybe the front office staff has changed a bit. I called to get my son in back at the beginning of 2018, and getting him assessed and scheduled with a counselor was a smooth and informative process. The psychologist we've been seeing (Hannah Bianco) is amazing and connects so well with my son. In coming to this clinic we've received that extra support we needed and now have tools to help us all work through anxiety at home. read more

Absolutely the worst customer service experience I've had in a long time. Mindy the gatekeeper of the scheduling refuses to put appointments on the schedule unless you promise that you won't be calling around to other places. She also immediately tried to dissuade me from the person who I would like to have seen, and said that they were booked 2 months out. I offered to come in whenever that they had a cancellation, but again, she also refused to do so "in favor of current clients." So, my only choice with this clinic it to wait it out for 2 months, without the expectation of seeing someone else. Yeah, not a good first impression at all. And dont ever call in and cancel an appointment because you will be charged anyway. The billing people are not understanding when children get sick and cannot make an appointment. My child is 7 and Dr. Sosne did not do any play therapy or try to talk but only demean my child by addressing his clothing. We had 3 appointments and walked away with nothing. I have ADHD and was brought to this program as a young child. I saw Dr. Turner during my time here. When I was here I was never coddled or told how much of a special little snowflake I was. If that is the kind of "care" you are looking for, then go somewhere else. This program tested me extensively in a no nonsense kind of way. As a kid it was a bit much at first, but as an adult I now understand the value. Everyone wants instant solutions for no effort. You will not get that here. You will be told realistically what your options are as well as be given the tools to succeed. Believe it or not a lot of the responsibility lies on the parents. I was given the lowest possible dosage of medication but it wasn't pushed on me. I was actually asked how I would feel about taking medication after a few visits, and my parents were given extensive instruction on how to cope with my affliction before medication was even brought up. I would never equate a human child to a dog, but I see this all the time as an animal trainer. People get dogs then call them retarded when they haven't put in ANY effort training them. This program might be tougher love than Americans these days are accustomed to, but I promise you I never would have gotten any better if i was told I was special and hugged rather than pushed to succeed. Accepting personal responsibility is something that no one seems to want to do. These people and programs are not magic. You need to accept that you are a part of the equation. You need to want to succeed. This program offered me the tools to do so. read more

My family's experience was so diametrically opposed to Kathy's and so much more in line with the sentiment of Heidi's that I signed up here in order to post. First, we were looking for a place to test my son for ADD and dyslexia. Not ADHD, not bad behavior, not a whole slew of other things... just ADD and dyslexia. However, the intake coordinator was so rude, so condescending and so unable to work with us that we gave up and went somewhere else. Some tips for this "clinic". Not all divorces create bad kids. Sometimes a learning disability really is just a learning disability. The people who answer your phones and contact patients better be good with people, courteous and responsive. So, as a kind, thoughtful, caring parent -- why in the world would I even consider sending my child to some place that seemed to make up it's mine about all problems he might be having before even having a conversation with us? This is just a bad call waiting to happen. I do, by the way, have some experience with pediatric mental health professionals, including one located right in Multnomah Village -- someone my son has been seeing to help cope with the loss of his grandmother -- who describes my son as delightful and doing pretty well, all things considered. read more

I called based on a referral from my son's doctor. I had to fill out personal information online and they would give me a call. I received a call from Mindy the same day. She immediately started asking me questions regarding my son's father and his role in his life. When I explained that his father has visitation but remains absent in his life, she refused to work with me. Let me clarify that I have sole custody and I am trying to get help for my son for anxiety, anger and ADHD. When I explained this, she still refused to work with us and said it was against company policy because we had a custody agreement. I keep hearing great things about this program but I feel as if I am being discriminated against because of circumstances out of my control. read more

After reading the one star reviews I could not help but flash back to the time our son came here when he was being assessed several years ago. The one star ratings really hit home as we saw some of the same doctors and I could not help but feel validated after reading what others have said. From the ridiculously outrageous fees to have my child assessed that were NOT covered by insurance, to be told my son would amount to nothing and was mentally retarded (turns out he has dyslexia and anxiety and is also color blind), and to be charged for an office visit to have a prescription filled because I was stepping foot in their office and it was considered an "office visit" (WTF?! - who DOES THAT?) and have the medication be completely WRONG for my son (it made him completely freak out when on it but the doctor insisted I keep him on it when clearly it was not helping him at all?).... the whole experience was a total nightmare. We left feeling broke and in despair. Perhaps the front desk people are nicer now, but I do remember them being very cold and clinical; not appropriate when catering to nervous first time parents going through a possible life-changing diagnosis with their children. Not a great first impression at all. I agree with another mom who had given a one-star review; DO YOUR RESEARCH. Ask around. Talk to people. Talk to your pediatricians, get lots of recommendations. Ask lots of questions and NEVER give up on your child and NEVER SETTLE if something does not feel right. I wish I knew then what I know now. The only saving grace is that we went through this hellish experience to find what is now a total GEM of a doctor (NOT at this practice) who not only worked with us to find the right combination of medications and therapy, but who actually listens to us and our son and he ...(GASP) actually cares about my son's future and well being. read more

Awful introductory phone conversation. When calling resources to figure out where to have my child tested and what different places offer and figuring which to choose. This place is awful at helping you navigate an already difficult and emotional maze!!!! They provide no details on the phone, they do not bother educating you in anyway or helping to understand why you might choose them over another resource. If their reception help represents their facility then I would not go here. Unkind, uninformative and unhelpful. The only way to get any info is to go there and spend $1500. No thank you!!! I have no comparative experience with pediatric mental health professionals, but I feel that finding the Children's Program was the a major factor in helping my son find happiness, confidence, and academic success despite the challenges he has faced with ADD. It was the saving grace for my sanity as well. From initial assessments with the learning disability specialist (can't recall her name) to ongoing sessions with a very supportive psychologist (Dr. Cordova) and ongoing meetings with a psychiatrist (Dr. Turner) in regards to medication, I've been pleased with the tenor, contents, and results of every session. More importantly, my son continues to find value in the appointments, and because of the positive interactions with the professionals there, he's developed a level of trust and communication with Dr. Cordova and Dr. Turner that I wouldn't have predicted. They both exhibit a knack for finding topics that are able to draw out even a sullen pre-teen. They have helped my son develop an understanding that he doesn't have a disorder or handicap that he can use as an excuse to not pay attention in school, but rather that his brain has talents that will serve him exceptionally well in creative areas of life, but will necessitate learning methods for handling other aspects of life which seem to come easily to most others. He doesn't feel set apart anymore, or frustrated with what he doesn't do as well as others in school; instead he recognizes he excels at things that others might struggle doing; he can better respond to negative situations without over-reacting, and, delightfully, he's learned to laugh at himself. In two years, he's gone from a moody kid with low grades and a complete disinterest in school to an enthused student that still shocks his teachers with the amount of positive change they've seen in him. I'm pretty surprised that the only other review here is a negative one, and reading that prompted my review now. I found my way to the Children's Program through the recommendation of two other mom's at my son's school, and again, have been really pleased and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the program and the staff I've worked with. I feel like my son's future has been positively impacted substantially because of this program--most especially because of our interactions with Drs. Cordova and Turner over the last few years. Having a teen who's smiling and chatty before and after these appointments is tangible proof that we've made a great decision in working with these folks. I most especially value the time I get to brainstorm with them in finding different techniques or pathways that might work well with my son. They're not delivering pat answers here--they care about the unique aspects of the kids and their families. Two thumbs up, 5 stars, not a negative observation in my experience, and we've probably had 15 visits in the last few years. read more

I would give them negative stars if I could. I just had an awful experience that made really question our MH help out there. I have been in the medical industry for over 20 years, including time in MH. I know how things work. I am desperately in need of help for my son. We have a Therapist and a med doc, but I am not getting the help needed by his med doc who I have been going to for years. I called Childrens program because I was referred by a friend who's son goes for medication management only. I was called by Mindy, the intake specialists. She started to ask me questions about why I was needing to be seen. I explained my situation. She was questioning everything I was saying. Made me feel like I was doing something wrong. She told me they only like to see patients who are in therapy there as well, which is not true because I know a few people going just for med management. Then we got into the kids dad. We are divorced and he can't make it to apts. She told me then we can't see you. I didn't understand why. A lot of people are divorced, this is a big reason they have kids in therapy. Divorced parents don't always want to be in the same room, they usually don't get a long, some times don't live in the same state, or maybe a parent has a job where they can't get time off. Either way, this is not a new thing. I have had my ex fill out paperwork in the past for our situation and that worked. Well Mindy didn't care about anything I had to say, she was very rude and condescending. I got off the phone with her extremely upset. I was hoping for help in my life, for my son and it was the opposite. I called back asking for a manager and specifically said I wanted to speak to someone other than Mindy. They put me on the phone with her. I told her how upset she made me and it didn't make sense that I can't get help because I am divorced. At this point I don't want to go to The Childrens place, but I felt she should know how she made me feel. I am in a very vulnerable situation, reaching out for help and she shot me down. Made me feel like a drug seeker, and that I wasn't able to get help because I was divorced. I would 100% steer clear of this place. For being in the MH industry for kids, this is not the kind of treatment ANYONE should get. She really ruined my morning and now I am back at square one. read more

We came here because of all the rave reviews from other parents wanting to have their child checked for a learning disability. We met with Dr. McCoy and Stephanie Verlinden. They did their job in giving my daughter several test over 2 days and recommended she start seeing Dr. Henderson for anxiety counseling. All I can say is we went 2x and realized it was a complete waste of money. My daughter didn't get anything out of the visits. She was actually told it was ok not to do well in school! I think the program is over-rated and wish I read these reviews sooner. read more

Please consider getting a new receptionist/gatekeeper. Our school guidance counselor referred me to this place and when I called, I got a very thorough Q and A session about my daughter - which lead to imply that I was not staying on top of my daughter's medical needs, which is wrong and ridiculous plus, I'm calling for a therapist. She then told me that she refused to book an appointment for us and that we had to look elsewhere because in her mind, waiting 2 months was too long. I begged her to book the appointment anyway, that it was fine, but she refused. Unbelievable. Too bad. read more

This review is for Nicole Sage who has been nothing but kind and supportive to my daughter. The front desk since they moved to their new location have been smiling and helpful. Although I am not a fan of the giant, impersonal space, Dr. Sage is great and my daughter has truly benefited from their connection. Not so sure about the behavioral pediatrician, she is nice enough but not so insightful or attentive. Although many of the counselors are very good, the management and Dr. Turner (their main psychiatrist) don't seem to be on the same page as the counseling team. It is what is best for the child versus the all-mighty dollar. Just be aware of the fact that this is an organization that is in business to make money.....period. Unfortunately, that fact became very clear to my family when our insurance ran out and my child was in crisis. When we realized we were facing paying full out of pocket, we tried to arrange a wrap-up appointment so we could at least create some closure for our family from the counseling routine we had gotten used to. We also needed help with how to handle the meds he was one. We asked to break the fee up over two months because we could not afford to pay the fee in full at once. They refused and showed us the door. We were left on our own with no medical or emotional support for our child. Very irresponsible and dangerous. Please consider the core intentions of this place before making a commitment. Trust your instincts. read more

I had received a positive recommendation from a friend about this program. When I called to discuss their services, an office staff member wouldn't let me schedule an appointment because she didn't feel I had discussed enough details with my ex-husband (child's dad) in advance of having called her. I didn't particularly feel that this was any business of hers, and this left a bad taste in my mouth. Without meeting him, she threw out 3 potential types of therapy that he would need. I have read the other reviews and wanted to lend some perspective from my experiences. My two children are patients and have been since 1994, when my son was 7. They both have ADHD [as do I] and problems with anxiety. Our lives have not been easy, my son had a nervous breakdown at one point and was suicidal. I don't know how we would have gotten to this point in our lives without help from the Children's Program. My son is much better and my daughter is improving on her anxiety issues. I have found that I have to ask alot of questions of any health care provider in order to understand my kids needs and be their advocate. If your doctor diagnosed a sinus infection when you were pretty sure it was strep, and the antibiotics didn't work, you'd say something. Jeff Sosne and John Liedel, both of the Children's Program always told me I knew my kids the best, even when I didn't think I knew them at all. I have found that to be true. So if you don't think your therapist or doctor is right for you or your child, it's your responsibility to ask questions and get explanations directly from them. If you think they're obnoxious, ask for their perspective. It does no one any good to stay quiet. Once you've spoken and listened, you might see things differently. Ask to see a different therapist, see how that works. If you're a patient, ask questions if your parents won't. We all have the right to ask, and your practitioner should have the answers, that's why they went to school and do what they call "practice'. Think about your own behavior. You may be as anxious and scared as I was, desperate for answers and cures. It's not easy to be human. We all understand that, but some people don't deal with it as well as others. Above all remember: It's medicine, not a miracle. Nothing cures a disorder, but you can make it manageable. it's talk therapy, not brain washing. it can be offered, but must be received and at least tried. Sometimes it's hard to explain to how you feel and think, especially if you're scared or ashamed. It just takes time. read more

After seeing several child psychologists, our son's occupational therapist thought The Children's Program and Dr. Sosne would be a good person for us to connect with. It changed everything for us. He was in kindergarten at the time. Over several years, our entire lives changed for the better. It was a lot of hard work on our part. Turned out he did have ADHD, but we didn't try medication until fist grade when it became clear that psycho-therapy alone and parent training weren't going to do the whole job. Before the developmental pediatrician prescribed anything, we met with our psychologist and the pediatrician for nearly an hour to discuss my son and his symptoms/behaviors. My son is now mainstreamed, which is a result that none of thought likely when we started this journey. It was exhausting work as parents, and still is a challenge day-to-day, but life if much, much better because we found help that worked for us at The Children's Program. It is a clinic that relies on billing insurance. As with many other providers that do insurance work, you need to be aware of your benefits and any limitations. Just like any other medical clinic, they do have certain business practices that can turn off people. You also should be aware that in mental health, the relationship between therapist and you is crucial to therapy working. Not every therapist is going to be a match, so you may have to shop around to find one that fits your particular needs as a family. Success really is individualized. We tried out several psychologists who probably are great people but who didn't work for us at all before we found The Children's Program and a psychologist who met our needs. read more

We have seen two different providers here for our two very-different children and both kids have had demonstrable improvement with things they are working on (selective mutism for one of them, which is entirely gone now after many years of her refusing to speak to others outside her family in many situations). After he very successful treatment for that, I recommended Dr MacPhail to another family, and they also have had great results. And my other child has seen Dr Sosne on and off since kindergarten for behavior issues (he is now in middle school), and his behavior has improved in many ways... more importantly, we have learned much better techniques as parents dealing with him. We have never had difficulty with front office staff or billing, and I agree they are a busy thriving practice and making appointments can be hard if you are in a rush, but I think they do what they do well, and are worth waiting for. read more

We tried two other places before using the Children's Program for help with our severely adhd teenager. Shawn Marshall ended up helping two of our children and my husband learn tools and techniques that turned their lives around. The tension in our house was dramatically relieved over a period of three months. His ability to mediate and facilitate communication was wonderful. I no longer feel like I live in a war zone. The office staff went far above the call of duty to make sure our insurance covered everything but our co-pay. I am very sorry that other people had bad experiences. I have recommended them to many other parents and not received any complaints. We focused on cognitive behavioral therapy not drugs. We had already tried every drug on the market with bad results. One child just finished his degree at Harvard. The other is a pre-med college freshman. I am a very satisfied mother. read more
