Bad experience for me. I went seeking an autism/adhd assessment, but my specialist refused to assess me because she was worried about my anxiety and depression issues. She prescribed me xanax daily and told me to find residential treatment instead. When I tried to schedule another appointment after I couldn't find options it turned out she had ended the treatment without telling me. $800 and 2 months for basically nothing. I'm just disappointed and it looks like I'm gonna have to keep looking. read more

Money hungry, greedy service that does not hear patient needs, constantly cancels appointments with no advance notice, and does little to check in on the week being of their patients. I am constantly beinf told my therapist is on vacation (who goes on vacation once a month?) and having appointments cancelled randomly. I have had appointments that I know I scheduled straight up not recorded on the company's calendar. Currently unable to see my therapist or get the meds I'm supposed to be prescribed so what exactly am I spending my money on heRE? Garbage service and garbage people. Receptionists at the Hillsboro location are also incredibly rude and full of themselves. I've straight up had the receptionist pretend she can't hear me on the phone several times now. Dr. Flegel is awesome! I have two children both with separate issues and we have been seeing Dr. Flegel for about 8 months. Very thankful for their service and working with our family to help us figure out our children's needs. We really connected with Dr. Flegel and she definitely takes the time to understand your child and gives you the appropriate education and options so you can decide what works best for your child/family. Appointments have been virtual due to covid. It will be nice to have some in-person care when able but for some appointments it will be nice to have a virtual option. Yes! We finally found an awesome psychiatrist who gets along with my difficult teenage son! By the way, I don't care that their no-show policy is hard: that is a much better way for our son to learn consequences of his misses in society than through misses with the police. Those consequences have everlasting records, whereas the no-show fee is just money you (in our case, our son) have to produce from somewhere. Since he has a job, from Day One we have made him finally responsible for his missed appointments. And trust me, he is now at Missed Appointment Number 3 and only now is he beginning to pay attention to the fact that he himself has to know when his appointments are. I spoke with a Dr. here twice. He was fine, and he referred me on because I needed someone who offered different services. The problem is with their office staff. First, they took forever processing my referral from my primary care doctor, saying they never received it, despite the fact that my Dr. had faxed it several times. They wanted me to intervene. I think doctors' office staff should be able to contact one another and exchange information without expecting the patient to intervene and handhold. Also, I was first told there was a long waiting list, then my Dr. told me it was much shorter, like a month or two. Then when he referred me on, I was told the waiting list was very long but they didn't know how long. I had also requested to be referred to a PsyD but I was referred to a social worker instead. When someone called me, I was busy at that minute, someone else was in the room with me and so I couldn't talk. I told her I'd call her back. The person in the room with me left immediately and I called back, literally one minute later (according to my phone) and it went to voicemail. I left a message and two days later, I still I haven't received a callback. Their office staff appears to be seriously disorganized and letting things slip through the cracks. It's too bad because the Dr. I spoke with was very nice. I don't believe the office staff is capable of scheduling new patients effectively. read more

HUGE disappointment coming here. My daughter needed (still needs) so much mental help. We waited at least 6 months to get into Mind Matters and of corse all they offered was zoom-big disappointment considering every where else was back to in person for quite sometime at this point. When I spoke to the lady on the phone when making my appointment it did sound like she was concerned for my daughter and wanted to get her help asap. Then the next time I called a different receptionist made me feel like I couldn't afford coming there and as if even if I had insurance it would be close to $300 for each of the first 3 assessment meeting that were each 1 hour. I didn't care because it was very necessary for my 13 yr old daughter to get help or I was worried she may hurt herself as they knew. I had to start with meeting with the psychologist (bc apparently that's all who was taking new clients)who was nice but very pushy with meds, in fact that's all we talked about via zoom. Our $300 appointments lasted no more then 20 minutes and then sent us on our way with our generic Zoloft. I had some concerns about it and my daughter hated how she felt on it...there was never one follow up or check in to see it she was doing okay, not one! Then we finally got in with a counselor via zoom and it felt as tho she was reading from a script. She asked 'is there anything else we didn't cover last time that u want to talk about?' probably 15 times and it was very uncomfortable. I was in every zoom meeting w my daughter, there was never a time she felt heard or that anyone really cared, it was terrible. We also missed an appointment-it was our first one w the counselor-as soon as I realized I called them right away and explained it slipped my mind bc my daughter had to make up back to school day which was mandatory for high school to get her ID card and books bc the day she was supposed to go she locked herself in the bathroom and it was terrible. That was about the only time I had their attention bc I still needed to pay $150 out of pocket which they never stopped harassing me for and I was in tears. My daughter has almost become a mute in the last 5years w crazy wild outburst and after 5 $300 meetings she is no better with no medicine and a whole lot of wasted time. Not once did I ever receive a check in call, or follow up call not once! even with them knowing how extreme her mood and self harm is. In general I feel like this company is a fraud. It is such a shame I wasted to much time with high hopes. My poor daughter just needs someone to listen and some medication that works for her and although this place advertises as the place to go I assure it's not. Do yourself a favor and find a private place that actually cares and WANTS to help your child. read more

It's so difficult to find help for your child who has disabilities in Oregon- most doctors are full. I was pleased when we were able to get into Mind Matters. We've been to a number of appointments now and are finally established. We have never been late for an appointment, never missed an appointment. We hadn't been there for 3 months but had a check in appt for 30 minutes scheduled- that I completely spaced. I was told the penalty is $150 for 30 minutes! I understand a penalty fee, but $150?!! Completely excessive and I feel taken advantage of. C'mon Mind Matters!! read more

AGE DISCRIMINATION. I spoke to an intake employee today at the Hillsboro Oregon office. She, Sandy, began asking "intake" questions. All the expected preliminary/intake questions expected. Then she asked my age. "Sixty-two." Sandy's response: "I'm sorry we don't take anyone over 60." I said: "that sounds just like age discrimination." Sandy replied in a defensive tone that it is not age discrimination. Over the next minute or two, she attempted to justify their age cutoff with excuses. I waited for her attempt at gaslighting me to end. When she was done, I said Sandy, when services are offered to folks up to 60, and those same services are withheld from those over the age of 60 you have discriminated against me based solely on my age. You used age as the only disqualifier. Maybe I am misinterpreting the federal law that protects us. read more

I called today because my daughter has an appointment I, I let them know I was concerned because my daughter was very depressed and had a lot of anxiety and I was struggling to get her to the appointment. I was reaching out to ask them if they had any suggestions. It was just an appointment to continue her medication, she had talk to the doctor a month earlier. I had left a message explaining the situation, I got a phone call back about an hour later and the person on the other end of the line said she wasn't sure what to do but if my daughter missed appointment it would be $150 for a no-show.... so much for "Mind Matters" huh ? I have appreciated this clinic for my son who has ADHD. He has benefited from the medication therapy his psychiatrist has offered. Getting started, assessed and treated was a straight-forward process. We transferred from another clinic that was disorganized and have been delighted about the professional and well-managed system at Mind Matters. I do agree with the other reviews that complain about the high cost of missing an appt. We've made 98% of our appts, but have missed a couple, having to pay $150 each time. But I think that's common in the medical field. However, if someone is a bit late and there is still 15-20 minutes left in an appt slot, they should allow the patient in since most of the med appts only last 10 minutes, thus there's plenty of time available in the slot to complete the appt. The doctors are often late in retrieving patients from the waiting room, so why can't they understand if a patient is a little late? Just a comment to reviewers who have complained that this clinic focuses on med management instead of therapy. That's the point of the field of psychiatry - meds. If you aren't seeking meds, then find a therapist. Or see both a psychiatrist and a therapist. But a psychiatrist is a doctor and prescribes medications. If you need that, then this clinic is very knowledgeable and workable. Overall, we've had a good experience here. And I appreciate that refills are done in a timely manner. read more

This clinic saved my life. Dr. Newman is a great psychiatrist who has worked with me for almost 3 years now. Most reviews will complain about the DNA test or high price of missing an appointment (both of which are true). However, I can only give positives for the DNA test, and the missing appointment fee is only if you miss an appointment, not rescheduling. Life happens, but it is suppose to be the patient's responsibility to call ahead if you can't make it to the appointment. Which I have had to do several times. The DNA test helped figure out what medication would work best for me, and also helped reveal other health problems with my body. I would recommend it, as it saved me from trying twelve dozen more medications just to find the right match for my body. As for Doctor Newman, he is a funny and caring guy. A great doc who will listen and try anything to help. Ask him about his lego collection in his office if you do decide to schedule an appointment :) read more

My now 16 year old daughter has Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), and Anorexia Nervosa. We've gone back & forth with medication as she has tried 8 different anti-depressants, none of which have worked so we took her off of them for over 2 years. She's been in therapy for 6 years. We were referred to Mind Matters as things have gotten progressively worse and we're ready to explore medication again. We called and had to wait 3 months for an appointment. I talked to them personally several times (trying to expedite the appointment) so they were aware of my daughter's eating disorder. We waited the 3 months and right before my daughter's first appointment, she relapsed and went into a residential eating disorder hospital in another state - she was there for 2 months. I was in communication with Mind Matters, informing them of what was going on, and rescheduling her initial appointment until after her discharge. We scheduled out 3 appointments for after her discharge. This entire time Mind Matters was fully aware that my daughter also had an eating disorder. We finally had our first appointment this week, 90 minutes long, my husband took a day off work as he was required to be there, and we filled out a ton more paperwork. My daughter was put on a pretty major anti-depressant in residential treatment and Dr. Bonnie Flick refused to refill it (we had 2 pills remaining). I explained she'd been on it for 5 weeks, she can't just go cold turkey. Dr. Flick was callous about it and said there's no way she's filling it, get her doctor to fill it. Ooookay... so we did that. And then, 2 days later Dr. Flick called us personally to tell us that there is NO PSYCHIATRIST AT MIND MATTERS THAT CAN HELP MY DAUGHTER WITH HER EATING DISORDER, DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY. They are refusing care. I'm absolutely disgusted. They may be great if you're having a little bout of depression or anxiety here and there - but if you have an adolescent/teenager who is really suffering, and especially if part of their negative coping mechanisms are eating disorder related - stay the h*ll away from this place. Dr. Bonnie Flick was a callous robot concerning our daughter and the general feeling is if these people really have to earn their money, they're just not going to treat your kid or help your family. Stay away from Dr. Flick and Mind Matters if you have a child with an eating disorder. They will lead you on for several months and then deny care. I mean, c'mon, I could have been researching and securing another psychiatrist during those 5 months, instead of wasting my time and my daughter's life, on Mind Matters. If you choose to come to this clinic, make sure you are never late. They understandably charge for missed appointments but apparently even if you're late they won't see you and you have to pay $150 for a 30 minute appointment. If I am paying for the doctors time then I should at least get the remainder of my appointment time. Such harsh policies lack any compassion or understanding for human error. We love Mind Matters and have been going for almost 4 years for my daughter and a year and a half for my son. Dr. Krupa is caring and helpful, and he is prompt about getting back to me if I have questions. He really does check his voicemails a few times a day and return calls. He has allowed us to do a couple of our appointments via phone as well when it snowed or I was ill and didn't want to subject everyone to my cold. My kids both love him and feel very comfortable in the office. Dr. Krupa knows a lot about how medications interact with their bodies and also recommends books and techniques to us. Our kids have shown so much improvement since we started here, and I am happy to have found a long term place for them to go. read more

I know we are in the middle of a pandemic, but it should not take a doctor or the nursing staff two weeks to give someone a call back. I had a very serious matter in which I needed a referral and it took them almost 2 weeks to respond after multiple days of leaving voicemails. I have yet to hear from my son's psychologist about making a follow up appointment for his anger after attempting multiple times to reach her. Families are genuinely needing help and I feel like this office doesn't take that seriously. read more

Honestly the doctor we have seen is great. But the real problem is scheduling with the office staff. They are uncoordinated. You get different answers from different people as to when new dates are open to schedule. Having a regular weekly appointment isn't something they do. And I got that straight from the office manager. I can't understand that. And his opinion is that I could go elsewhere if I didn't like it. My other child has different medical appointments at different places that are weekly, and it has been zero stress scheduling those... I witnessed treatment plans of Mind Matters for multiple years. Very prescription/ drug centric practice. Focus on treating symptoms with pharmaceuticals vs. getting to the behavioral root of problems. Lack of child psychology expertise makes this practice a very one-sided treatment option in my opinion. I have been going to Mind Matters with my son since late Summer. My son is 9 years old and has ADHD/anxiety with some violent outbursts (some of which have left me very bruised and injured). I have been on time (every time) and have never missed an appointment....Until last week. I am a very detailed and organized person in general but I guess as of January 1st 2015 we as parents and patients don't get to be human at Mind Matters!!!! I was told that I had to pay $150.00 because I missed 1 appointment. I refused and was kicked out unless I paid. The interesting part to all of this is that "They" "Mind Matter" screwed up one of my appointments just a few weeks back. Took me off the schedule by mistake. I guess my time is worth nothing!!!! The biggest issue I have with all of this is that I am not an abuser of this policy by any means. We as people and humans make mistakes, should we all be charged $150 or more for every mistake? I guess mind matters think so. They care nothing about the kids and families that are going through Hell and care only about the money!!!! At least that's what this policy seems to be about. Tried to speak to Dr. Newman but he decided to have his assistant call me to tell me the news. Really!!!! You can't do your own dirty work!!!??? Wow this speaks volumes to me about your business and your moral compass. I would only go here if you never make mistakes.....because if you do, it will cost you $150.00 no matter what!!!! Very Sad and very concerning to say the least. Here is an update to my review. The owners of Mind Matters stood firm on their decision but......My son's counselor and MD went to bat for me and got the owners to wave the fee. I can not thank these 2 people enough (Maryanne Stewart and Dr. Krupa) for standing up for me and what was right. They believe that the policy is in place for people who have chronic issues with not showing up or showing up late for appointments. That was, and is not me. So thank you to both of them. Dr stewert Newman is the best family psychiatrist I have met in 30 years of experience with psychiatric doctors. He is personable funny but totally effective and engaged. Don't even think about calling this practice if you have an AARP card. My first question: "Is this a child psychiatry practice?" (Based on the reviews that describe young patients.) Reply: "No, this is a child and adult practice." Great. The intake process was explained to me and showed a pretty high level of sophistication, or so I thought. They had my name and birthdate, already a risky situation, when I was suddenly told I am too old for them. 'Doesn't matter that I am gainfully employed, have been married to the same man for 43 years, have two wonderful sons in their 20s, and am a healthy, productive citizen. Imagine how I felt. Ageism is no different from any form of discrimination based on who you are. What other biases might they have? I wonder what will happen when they become "golden agers" themselves and experience what it's like to gradually become invisible and irrelevant. They have, perhaps, an aversion to Medicare, which I might or might not have, and if I did, I might also have Plans B and, D and a comprehensive Supplemental Plan that pays very generously. If Medicare is a problem for them, they should just say so straight-up. If they just don't like working with "old" people, they should hire a writer to script a nicer way to say so. read more

I brought my son here to find out what was going on with him. The entire time we went to this practice 2008-2009 they wanted to prescribe him drug after drug. The doctor tried to convince me he needed a drug that was used for schizophrenia in adults but was approved by the FDA in minimal dosage for children to curb his chewing on things and impassivity. The doctor handed me a very long technical diagnosis (which was accurate) and sent me on my way not explaining to us what it meant, or how it affected our child. His idea of helping him was also via "Play" therapy where he got on the floor and played with toys with my son and we paid him $$$ per hour to do this. We were not receiving any therapy or help that was benefiting my child so we moved on from the practice. My child is mentally disabled and the doctor was unaware as to whether or not he qualified for SSI and had never heard of a child receiving SSI for his disability before (which he does, as do all children with his disability qualify for). They also charge a ridiculous amount of money not covered by insurance if an appointment is missed. As you can understand with a special needs child, you never know when emergencies will come up and you can't make your appointment. read more
