    St John's Day School

    St John's Day School

    (1 review)

After enrolling my child last August (2017) I was quite surprised when I received a letter from the…read moredirector in May (2018) stating that my child's behavior was so out of control that they would no longer be able to attend St. John's. Now, I had received little notes that had statements such as "Your child (aged 3-4) was not a good listener today.", "Your child told me 'no' and wouldn't participate in the activity.", "Your child threw a crayon", or "Your child wouldn't listen, so they went to the director's office." Not once had the director called me to come pick my child up early. I never received an official notice about the behavior, and when I would speak to my child's teacher (when they happened to actually be there during my normal drop off or pick up time) these issues were never discussed in detail. In my perspective as a parent, this seemed like normal 3-4 year old behavior. Nothing seemed serious based on those little notes. I did address these instances with my child as was requested in said notes, but when I spoke with the teacher, the only feedback I got in person was whether the day was good or bad, but nothing in detail about what occurred, nothing to indicate that this was a major problem. In addition to this, the director saw me regularly dropping my child off in the morning and never asked to speak to me, never requested a meeting to discuss these issues, and never gave me any reason to believe that my child's behavior was an extreme disruption. The letter I received in May was such a shock because based on the "school's" own policies, I should have received up to 2 official notices, a scheduled meeting, phone calls to pick my child up, and a possible suspension for my child's behavior. Apparently my child's behavior was just too serious to ever follow the protocol that is clearly stated in their policies. Which is also available to the public to read on the school's website (www. sjdsnm. org) under the "Student Guidance/ Aggressive Behavior/ Discharge Policy". I was also quite confused as I had just re-registered my child in April (2018), a month before this letter was sent to me, and had received an email confirmation that my child was accepted for the summer program and would be placed in the next class for 4 year olds. Why would St.John's accept such a terrible child to continue to attend their school? If the behavior was really as bad as was described in the letter, given in May from the director, then why not use the opportunity of registration time to request a meeting, or to notify me that my child was not accepted? These practices are not what I would expect coming from a church based pre-school program. So, if you have a 2-5 year old child who behaves as such, then I don't believe St. John's Day School would be the best place for your child to attend. If your child is a perfect angel, listens to absolutely everything you say, and never acts out, then by all means this is the best place for your child to attend.
