My deceased grandmothers ring was stolen, and I feel horrible and beyond guilty. But as they say, the guilt will pass. UMMMM, no it won't. I will never get over the fact that I was given this sentimental ring to remember her and now I have nothing. My Dr. is the one who suggested I get an ESA, but yet this company feels different. My suggestion is to go with Keystone Psychological Services. She listened to what I had to say and gave me material to read on to help me cope. I am completely disappointed with the way this service has handled my case this year for my ESA small 2 pound teacup yorkie. This is my second year trying out this service. I'm finally feeling less stressed and nervousness from traveling with my companion and now I received an email saying that I am fine and have not been approved to continue to travel with her!? I'm confused of course I feel better I am able to travel with her isn't that the whole point? And of course I won't receive my full refund of $180 on top of that for the evaluation? Wow sounds like a scam to me. I'm absolutely shocked and need to travel with her again this Saturday morning I'm not sure what to do right now unbelievable. Please do not use this service Google someone else. Just wanted to give an update no one has called me back or has issued me a full refund. I have left several messages and obviously these people do not care for my wellbeing. Please go to your regular doctor! Pay your copy of $40 or whatever you normally pay and you will receive a signed letter! Do not waste $180 for this service with this company it is completely a scam! 2/1/14 I feel bad for the person who had trouble with Chilhowee, but they were very helpful to me. They promptly set all of the appointments I needed and sent a recommendation letter just in time. This was a great tool for me since I needed a recommendation quickly and was not able to get one from my regular therapist (we hadn't been meeting regularly enough, and a therapist from the same office had been sued for providing a recommendation in the past). I called and talked to the receptionist before paying for an evaluation, and she was very friendly and professional. I felt I could trust Chilhowee from the start. I'm now legally able to have a dog in my otherwise no-pets-allowed apartment. My dog is a great comfort to me, and I can't imagine life without him. 9/4/14 It's been seven months since the eval, and I'm finding that there are a lot of obstacles to keeping a dog in a no-pets apartment. Many people don't know the Fair Housing law, and those who do ignore it or have complicated paperwork. So a letter is not a perfect solution. This is in Utah, which lacks housing regulations. You can have Chilhowee fill out forms and stuff for more money, which is ridiculous to me. Yes, it's a service. But a typical medical professional doesn't charge you every time you need something filled out. So 9 months ago, Chilhowee's services were exactly what I needed. But if I had looked to the future, I would have made sure to find a local solution, such as a regular physician's help, because every time I move, a new obstacle pops up, and it's because my recommending therapist at Chilhowee is more of a service provider than a genuine counselor. So great short-term solution, poor (and expensive) long-term solution. Here are some tips to keep in mind while considering an ESA: Tip #1: Landlords can legally evict tenants with an ESA who is aggressive, destructive, or disruptive. If your pet causes damage or has behavioral issues, look forward to a lot of red tape and stress. I wouldn't trade my dog for anything, but his behavioral issues have caused hell to boil over at times. The Fair Housing Act allows landlords to evict for damage that costs more than the deposit. Good luck finding a place after that. Be very sure when you adopt or buy a pet. Cost can also be prohibitive if you take your pet to the vet and pay for its care when you're away. Tip #2: An emotional support animal is not on the same level as a psychiatric service animal. An emotional support animal does not need to be trained, BUT he/she also does not have the ability to go anywhere you go. For example, you cannot use your dog's ESA status as an excuse to take your dog into a store that prohibits pets. A service animal, on the other hand, is trained to perform specific functions and is allowed to go places where dogs are generally not allowed. Qualifying for a service animal requires that your mental illness is severe enough to be disabling. I wanted to mention this because some reviewers mention that they can now take their ESAs wherever they go. I suspect that they don't understand the laws surrounding ESAs or are confusing ESAs with service animals. Technically, a business owner is not allowed to ask you whether or not your pet is a service animal or even ask for qualifying paperwork, but there are still some who will. Tip #3: Your dog's status as an ESA or service animal does not guarantee you an exemption from no pet rules with every landlord. The Fair Housing Act states that landlords do not have to make reasonable accommodation for you if they own four or less units or own single family housing that is rented without the help of a real estate agent. So don't get a dog and assume that you can easily get an exemption. Do the paperwork first. Tip #4: Landlords cannot charge a deposit for an ESA, but they can charge for damages caused by your animal. Tip #5: Even though you can provide your landlord with a letter from Chilhowee as evidence of your need for an ESA, property managers can ask that your physician or therapist fills out a third-party form for verification. This was a problem I ran into when moving to other apartment complexes. While you will pay $164 for a letter from Chilhowee, you'll pay another $50-75 for each verification. read more

There are a lot of fake companies out there. If they are GOOD, UPSTANDING, ETHICAL business they will do their best to help you not to scam you of your money for which they did not earn or provide services for. So please read on... On 9/27/13 I purchased an online ESA (emotional support animal) letter for %180.00 from Chilhowee after I was told by a landlord that my current letter from my current MFT was not sufficient. I was (wrongly)told it must come from a Psychologist, Psychiatrist or Clinical Social Worker. ODER INFO: Your Order Information Order # 107384 Disability Assessment and Letter of Prescription : $ 174.00 SUB TOTAL: $ 174.00 TAX: $ 0.00 SHIPPING: $ 6.95 ORDER TOTAL: $ 180.95 This is what Chilhowee advertises on their website: "Even if your pet is already registered as an Emotional Support Animal with an official registration agency, you will still need a letter prescribing your need for an emotional support animal written by a PSYCHOLOGIST or other licensed Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP). That's where Chilhowee Psychological Services comes in: We make it easy!" I was contacted by Chilhowee's mental health provider, Jerry Snodgrass on 9/29/13 to set up an appt. He called me and told me that I had not taken the psychological assessment testing and that I would need to finish the testing before he could speak to me or before I could ask him any question regarding my current letter. Or even to ask for his credentials. Upon completing the tests in order speak to a "Psychologist, Psychiatrist or Clinical Social Worker", Jerry called me again. We only spoke as far as his disclaimer where he then told me he was not a Psychologist, Psychiatrist or Clinical Social Worker. I told him about my current letter from my MFT and the reasons for my purchasing the ESA letter. At this point I was told my letter by law was sufficient, that the landlord was just trying to make my life difficult and to bully me. The end result was that I do not need Chilhowee's services. I did not use Chilhowee's services. Jerry and I had no MENTAL HEALTH DISCUSSIONS. I contacted Kim at Chilhowee to explain the situation and request a refund. She then told me she would pass the info to her manager who was out of town but would call me in two days. I received no such phone call. Six days later I called them again and this time spoke to Alison(?) who claimed she was the manager. After describing my situation she refused to give me a full refund even though I had not used any of their services. When I asked for her name again she refused to give it to me. I asked for her supervisor to which she also denied to give me. I then asked who the owner of the company was and told me that she was the co-owner. So I then asked the name of her partner and then she hung up on me. It seems clear that this company is not in the business of helping people. It seems this company is a scam who collect money from good honest people and when they do not provide any service they will refuse a full refund stating that "This is company policy". Is is company policy to take money from people for services they did not provide? They will tell you that in order to speak to someone you MUST take the psychological assessment testing for which they will charge you for. Yet, you can not speak to someone to find out if their services are even needed until you take the test. This is where the scam is. This company has several other complaints against them with the BBB. I wish I had known this before I made my purchase. Unfortunately those complaints are not published. But as of Oct 2012 they will be so I hope this complaint will help others like me to make better choices and/or to receive the refunds we deserve. I am truly hoping for a positive end result. I am hoping Chilhowee will do the right thing and give me a FULL REFUND. **NOTE: Their reply was a fabricated story that never took place. If a company pursues "Mud Slinging" as part of their customer service then this should be enough information for you to know the kind of business they are. First you take an online test, then they set up two interviews and when you get diagnosed they send you the letter of prescription. They are very fast with the whole process! They also let you know you will not get a refund whether you receive a letter or not...so you need to make sure you read everything and follow the instructions or you'll end up being like the people who gave bad reviews. First off let me say that this company is amazing!!! I wish I could give more than 5 stars. I was diagnosed with sever depression, and anxiety and have struggled over the past 6 years fighting doctors and switching to different people as nothing seemed to work. Having serious health issues to add to it has made it hard for me to accept taking prescription medications to help me with as most call it mental illness. As I have been a huge animal lover my whole life, and have owned many horses and dogs I have always found that being around animals has helped me cope and put me in a "better place". As I soon started to realize my found happiness is having a "friend" at my side 24/7 I decided to get myself a dog and see if there was any hope in myself to find happiness on my day to day activities. I came across my Pit Bull puppy 7 months ago, he was I believe 3-4 weeks when I found him. When I tell you, this dog has changed me it is a understatement. This dog saved my life, and I saved his. I do not go anywhere without my dog as he is attached to my hip on the daily. As I found that this worked for me I then proceeded to tell my therapist that I found that having him was a better medicine for me rather than putting the opportunity for prescriptions to be in easy access in my house as they made my life more challenging and my symptoms worse rather then the good they were supposed to provide. I asked her if she could prescribe Opie as an ESA/Service companion for myself and she refused saying she does not believe in animals helping people cope with their struggles in life. WHAT THE HECK!! To add it became a struggle as it seemed Drs. would rather write me prescription medication ($$$) rather than just making my life easy as I told them since I had got the dog it has drastically made my day to day activities much easier along with my anxiety attacks have been less frequent, they also saw results from it. SHAME. Even after putting Opie through special training for specific things, as alerts, calming methods when he senses tension and other symptoms I receive, I still struggled getting him certified even after paying a lot of $$ for special training for months. He is still in training and will continue to be until he is around 2 or 3 for other medical reasons as well. So not only was he a ESA for me he is Medically needed for health problems. I found NSAR through a friend and within a week, they had my dog all signed up and they were out of stock in the MED red vests but Jennifer was VERY on top of keeping me informed. She said it would take 2-3 weeks for the vest to come in. The I recived and e-mail from her saying that I would get the vests in a few days! So happy with how on top of things they are and their customer service. When I was done with all this registry and got all he needed they suggested if I was struggling getting a letter for landlords and travel that I should go to their people. They then sent me to Chilhowee Psychological Services, I then had over the phone calls with Dr.Timothy Livingood who was so amazing and helpful and in less than 24 hours after our last phone call he had my prescribed ESA letter for Opie e-mailed to me and 2 days later I received my hard copy. Thank you NSAR and Chilhowee Psychological Services for not only making my life easier but also making it possible for Opie and I not to get separated due to the ban of the Pit Bull. For those potentially scared off by the 1 star reviews, I can address your concerns. Chilhowee is very clear that what you are paying for *is an evaluation* of your psychological state. You are *not* guaranteed a prescription for an ESA - that would be the equivalent of purchasing a prescription (not okay). They emphasize this point several times: if after evaluation (by a third party, also an excellent service), you are not deemed emotionally or mentally disabled, you will not receive the prescription for the ESA nor a refund of your money because again, the payment was for an evaluation of mental state, not purchasing a letter. They also make clear on their website and during the evaluation what it means to qualify as emotionally/mentally disabled. Definitely read it closely to determine if those qualifications apply. So, if you are indeed emotionally/mentally disabled and require an ESA, do not worry at all because you are in excellent hands. They will treat you with great compassion and respect, and they will ensure that you have what you need in order to be supported, and it will be done very quickly. Horrible. This clinic is a racket. Hired them to do an assessment for an emotional support animal. My case was outsourced to a third party. This third party did an assessment but needed to call it an interview because they weren't doctors. Therefore had no authority to do a thorough evaluation nor the authority to issue a letter. When I found out that this HOA rules at the new condo I'd bought weren't what I was told and my dog, captain might not be able to live there I was heartbroken. He's helped me through some incredibly tough times the past two years with depression and anxiety attacks and I can't live without him. I had a flight coming up and could not get to my regular therapist to update my current ESA letter. apparently attempting suicide 4 times is not enough to warrant me at least clinically depressed. my doctor has attempted to prescribe me anxiety and depression medications several times but I have refused mostly in part to my anxiety to begin with. Knowing that I have someone at home who will unconditionally love me for me is what keeps me going on a daily basis. I have never felt so loved by anyone as I do from my dog. Since having my dog I still think about suicide but I could never take my life knowing the love we have for each other. I can't say enough about how pleasant my experience was with CPS! After completing the required assessment, I was contacted the very next day by my mental health professional to schedule my two follow-up calls. The woman I spoke with, Stephanie, was kind, patient, and professional (I was having a particularly rough day and kind of released all of my emotional baggage). She didn't make me feel crazy for what most people (family/friends) have told me is irrational anxiety/fear and really tried to understand what I was going through. While she didn't state on the phone whether or not she was going to approve my ESA request, she suggested some alternative ways I can try to manage my anxiety. After my second session. she submitted her recommendation (I still did not know whether or not I was approved at that point) and I received my PDF letter the very next day; I also received notification that my paper letter was mailed the same day. I do understand how people can feel frustrated if they are not approved for their ESA, however, they fully disclose that you are not guaranteed to get a approved- you are paying for the SERVICE regardless of the outcome. I absolutely would have been upset if I was not approved (especially in the emotional state I'm currently in), however, I still would have nothing but great things to say about their efficient process and how I was treated. For all the butt hurt people that are complaining about their service... first of all.. they tell you at the beginning that if you were to pay, they will not refund the money or at least part of it because it's part of testing. THEY STATE IT VERY CLEARLY. With any place, if you test for something like HIV it doesnt mean if you don't have it, you get your money back. Not trying to be rude, but they also state if they don't think you have severe problems with anxiety and it's actually limiting one or two parts of your daily tasks such as job or school, YOU ARE NOT A SERIOUS PATIENT! I have been using this service for several years and it has been fantastic. I have my dog certified as a ESA animal and the service that they provide is great. I took the tests after my only son passed away and I was feeling very poorly. A psychologist phoned me several times and talked to me asking me questions and then I received a letter from them. I have been able to take my dog, who is a little human on the plane out of the country, inside the cabin with us. I have also had her in hotels and never been charged. Of course she is charmer and delights everyone who sees her but the letter for the airlines is fabulous and the company did what they said they would do. This was easy and extraordinarily helpful! You have to be fastidious about filling out the assessment, but it is well worth it. Appointments were set quickly, the letter was sent promptly, my therapists were awesome. We take our virgin flight in two weeks and I've been practicing by taking my pup to public places and stores with his ESA vest on and its going very well. In fact, my anxiety is actually better just having gone through the process and feeling more confident about bringing my little guy to more places with me, even though that's not the point of the letter, I just feel that more doors have opened to us. read more
