Hubby and I moved to the area almost 2 years ago. Though it's a strange area for takeout and delivery, China Chef has proven itself to be a decent option when we're craving, as my husband calls it, "red and sticky" chinese food. We don't usually stray far from the "red and sticky" classics like general tso's, orange chicken, bourbon chicken, etc. For the most part it's all decent though no dishes stand out to be absolutely crave-inducing. In true "red and sticky" fashion, the fried meat pieces are usually absolutely drowned in whatever sauce comes with the order, saturating the breading to the point where it becomes soggy and sticky. Generally, the sauces are decent, though none have been standout stars in my opinion. The fried rice is OK as are the noodle dishes we have sampled. Hubby also tried their wonton soup recently and it was pretty good! Lastly, I appreciate that they have "Chinese" fried chicken which I sometimes crave like nobody's business! Their fried chicken appetizer has always been cooked perfectly and seasoned well. To be honest, it's the fried chicken appetizer that really brings this place to a solid three stars in my opinion. Overall, the place is a decent Americanized chinese food restaurant that offers pick up/take out or delivery (at least through one or two of the locally available delivery services). If I could give negative 5 stars I would. It's a Thursday evening around 6:30 and I want some good Chinese food. This one is closest to home so I order over the phone. As soon as man answers all I get is "what do you want.." I said I'd like to order to go. Once I was done giving him my order, he hung up. No price, number to refer to, nothing. That should have been my first indication this was going to be bad. I ordered spring rolls, wontons, sesame seed chicken with fried rice and sweet and sour chicken with chicken lo main. I received three packages of spring rolls which was odd but they were covered in grease, no..saturated in grease. After taking them out of the bag of oil and grease to dry on a paper towel, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and tried it. The wrapper used had to of been 10 years old. The contents of the roll were complete mush. I even let my bf try the rolls maybe it was just me , nope it was the spring rolls. Moving on I tried the wontons, same story. Completely drenched in oil and grease. I had assumed because the menu said wontons and not crab wontons but they would have cheese in them. Wrong! There was something brownish black inside and I couldn't tell you what it was. Right in the trash. By this point I'm upset. Thankfully my sweet and sour chicken isn't drenched because I'm hungry and want something to taste good. It was okay. They weren't fresh by any means. Save your money and time. I'm pretty picky about my Chinese food but this is the best place around the Sangaree/Summerville area! I've tried many places and by far this is the best. They are friendly, the food is cooked fast and they have never messed up my order. They are one of the ONLY places that will do no onions in their fried rice which I love! I'm new to the south so Chinese take out is a little different and I'm still getting used to it but this is my go to place now. Give it a try! read more

This is the best China restaurant in the Sangaree area to get takeout. The food is always hot and fresh. The egg drop soup is always on point. Sweet and sour chicken is cooked perfectly. The shrimp with garlic sauce is a personal favorite. This restaurant is located in a strip mall with plenty or parking and easy to get in and out. Plus your food takes only 10 to 15 minutes no matter how busy. Highly recommended! read more

This review is from a local's perspective. I have lived in the Summerville area for almost 2 decades. My mother would always come to China Chef since it was nearby and convenient. Because of our family's diet plan (made by mother), we ask for white sauce instead of soy and it was never a problem. The little benefits of being a regular does not come in coupons and the like. It comes in when you call over the phone for your order. They get the minute details that you usually ask for, such as white sauce, when you least consider it. Also you get a calender at the end of the year ( don't know if they still do so ). Overall, best chinese takeout in Summerville/Sangaree... even Moncks Corner as far as I know! I've tried a lot of Chinese restaurants and find the majority have either nasty meat or terrible rice. How do you mess up rice? All the sit down places now have more American food than Chinese and it's usually old and crusty. I'll get my pizza from a pizza place. Thank you. (You can keep the cheese sticks though). This is by far the best Chinese food I've had. I usually get the general tso chicken. It's very flavorful and always fresh. My husband and I don't like onions in our rice so we ask for it to be left out and they're always nice about it. The rice has a nice grilled like taste. Their fried wontons are fantastic. The price is great and I can easily get two meals out of mine. I end up spending less getting take out then eating buffet. I would eat here even if it was higher. Great food! Very nice staff! Best I can say about this mostly Carryout Joint is that I didn't feel sick after eating it. We ordered General Tso's, Lo Mein, Pork Fried Rice, Steamed Dumplings, Shrimp Egg Foo Young, Chicken w/ Broccoli, Crab Wontons and a handful of Egg Rolls. General Tso's had very little flavor, no spice, no sticky sweet sauce. Blah. Shrimp Egg Foo Young was again flavorless, along with flavorless Brown sauce. Egg Rolls were all wrapper and cabbage. Pork Fried Rice-rice was an unnatural shade of yellow. odd. Steamed dumplings actually passable as were Crab Wontons. The Crab Wontons were about the only thing that I could say was remotely as tasty as the Chinese Food i get while home. Oh, and they forgot the Lo Mein but threw in some Spring Rolls as a bonus. Next time I would prefer no "bonus" and just give me the food I ordered. All in all, probably much more satisfying when you are drunk or stoned! I'm new to the area and trying to find great places to eat so when my husband joins me I can take him to places I know are good. There are three Chinese take-out places within a half mile of our new home. I've tried all three and have decided China Chef comes in dead last. The fried rice was a bit crunchy and not in a good way. The rice was undercooked. The shrimp were small and also slightly undercooked. So, between the time I picked up my order and the time I got home, the shrimp had been in the hot rice for 5-6 minutes and they still weren't pink. They were mostly a milky gray color. Kind of mushy. Yuk! I ordered spring rolls but was given an egg roll. When I told the cashier I had ordered spring rolls she argued that I had ordered egg roll. I just took it and left. The egg roll was good, but not what I wanted. This place came in dead last because of food taste and quality, poor service and inaccuracy. I won't go back. Normally this place is on point but Monday 8/28/2017 they were off. Ordered large shrimp lo-mein and it was nasty. The noodles were over cooked and the shrimp just disintagrated!!!!!! The stuff that looks like noodles but shorter(not sure what it is) wasn't cooked enough they were still hard and un-chewable!!!!! The hot and sour soup wasn't any better. Worst Chinese food establishment I've ever eaten. Staff was rude. The delivery slow. Food was cold when it arrived. Waited over an hour. For it and the crab ragoon was cold and hard. The egg rolls were greasy and cold and the broccoli and carrots in my beef with broccoli was frozen and heated with my beef. Nothing like soggy cold broccoli and frozen vegetables in your Chinese food. The sweet and sour chicken. Was soggy and greasy and the red sauce was thick like gravy. Awful food. I've eaten here a few times. I really love there pepper steak. The fried rice is a traditional style American Chinese. Its pretty good id say. Some if there other food has a ton of Ginger in the food that overwhelm the taste so I stick to the food without it in it. The customer service is always good, food warm and fast.
