I don't know if they were just having a really bad time tonight or what... but... bleh. I'm amazed at how they were able to mess up Chinese fast food. It seems like other reviewers like this place, so perhaps tonight was anomalous, but I was *super* disappointed with my noodles this evening. The sauce (I opted for the sweet and sour) was so watered down and it just totally lacked any flavor whatsoever (usually the best part of these places is the abundance of MSG-enhanced sauce). The veg was really overcooked and soggy and just... all in all disappointing. My partner got a totally different noodle/sauce/topping combination and was equally disappointed-- his actually just tasted burnt. Service was very friendly, though. Everyone there seemed on top of their jobs, despite it being an rather busy Friday night with lots of delivery orders coming in. I mean, maybe we just weren't drunk enough? Obviously this place gets points for the convenience, but for roughly the same price you can pop into one of many restaurants in China Town for takeaway 10x better than this.

Tonight however I have just ordered for 6 people, quite a substantial order as we usually do, at only 8:40 and to be honest I am disgusted at the lengths this company will go to make an extra £3.50. Delivery is usually free as we spend a decent amount, but because it has snowed today, (bearing in mind most of the snow has now melted and it is just slush) - they made a point of asking for a "couple of pound more" when questioned about this they said it would actually be £4 extra. It is not the cost that is the issue, it is the principal that an average quality takeaway service feel that that can request the price of an additional meal just because they have to deliver it on a day that is has snowed. Absolutely ridiculous. Poor excuses when questioned and poor customer service. Can't help but think that they are just another 'money comes first' Indian restaurant; and let's be honest, in Birmingham there's no shortage of those! But once inside it's clean and tidy, we use this takeaway on a regular basis taking advantage of their home delivery service, which is always a good service i don't think we have ever waited more than fifty minutes even at busy times. The food is very good value and of a good quality, Orders over a tenner are free of any delivery charge and you sometimes get a free portion of prawn crackers.

But there's a very in depth, wide range of dishes, from won ton soup to mushroom curry to a large selection of duck dishes. So there's literally everything for lovers of all Chinese food, and vegetarians do not have to struggle to find something suitable either. (Just thinking about Hong Kong's now is making me hungry!) Waiting time for food is no longer than 10 minutes, but there's a limited supply of chairs inside, so be prepared to stand up. The staff are highly proficient, and always try their hardest to make sure you are happy with their service.

New lotus meets my criteria for acceptable takeaway food, however it has nothing else beyond that. Curiously, I haven't developed a loyalty to it despite its tasty egg fried rice and spare ribs. It's a mystery as to why. Perhaps this is a phenomenon that stretches beyond that of Chinese takeaways and should be inquired into as maybe having greater implications? Nonetheless, it does nice food for a reasonable price. For those who just want a Chinese in the comfort of their own home.

These days I'm a fan of Ruby Garden in Hall Green, but I've searched for the menu in my kitchen cupboard and done extensive searching on the internet for half an hour but they are shy in putting their phone number up there for some reason, and I don't fancy the impersonal nature of ordering take-away food on-line... I can remember the phone number for New Lotus as it contains my lucky number, (43), and the year of The Indian Mutiny (1857). I order Char Sui (Roast pork) curry and Jeni has chicken satay, and we have the obligatory fried rice and prawn crackers too. When the food arrives I'm missing Ruby Garden already. The price is the same but the portions are half the size at New Lotus. And the prawn crackers... My uncle always used to ask at Chinese restaurants 'Are the prawn crackers fresh?', which used to irritate my dad. 'Of course they're fresh!' my dad would mutter to me under his breath, 'Who wouldn't serve fresh prawn crackers?' Well, it seems New Lotus have taken that tack on this occasion. They are not only cold but also stale. 'The ones in a bag from a supermarket are better than these!' Jeni cries. I'm hungry though and while I chuckle I'm using them as little more than cutlery to scoop up the curry and rice with, rather than for their (non-existent) taste. Though it is enough to put a dent in my faith in my once-favourite Chinese take-away.
