I came here from south Texas with my family and we were shocked at how great everything was from the tea to the appetizers and the main entrees, the food was not only delicious but one singular dish portion was large enough for 2 people to share. If you're treating a large group to a meal, this is the place to you want to go to - the beef flat noodles is only about $12 but the serving size was ginormous. The dim sum is pretty good too - ha gow was nothing special, but the shrimp rice noodle roll was phenomenal and easily the best item we had. Warning, the chili oil is really spicy - only get a small spoonful when you first try it. When we came on a Saturday lunch, it was absolutely packed, which says a lot about the popularity of this place. Shout out to the two servers who were running around and serving all the tables - they were efficient Only downside was that we didn't get a menu for a while - luckily we had someone who had been here before and knew what to get, but yeah that was likely an oversight on their part. read more

Small place in a little strip mall never noticed it before. Limited seating so the place fills up quick. I ordered Chui chow and sui mai dumplings and beef silver noodles. I enjoyed the silver noodles and sui mai but found the skin on the Chui chow dumplings too soft. The place is space limited so tables are a little tight and the ceramic tile floors lead to a loud background.. there was only one server for most of the time I was there, poor gal was working hard. This is my first time here to celebrate Chinese New Year with friends who ordered a ten course meal. Our server was pleasant and helpful(it was reassuring to see that she was taking precautions by wearing a surgical mask); she brought each dish to our table in a timely and efficient manner. 1. Fish maw and shrimp soup: flavourful and the right consistency (I've tasted some pretty "gluey" and bland Chinese soups). 2. Snow peas and seafood: snow peas were tender-crisp, squid was buttery soft, and the scallops and shrimp were perfectly done. 3. Beef and vegetables: the large chunks of beef were tender and seasoned perfectly, complemented by stir fried onions, yellow and green peppers without being too oily. 4. Lobster and crispy noodles: the lobster was nicely cooked and the cream sauce was very light. 5. Sugar pea tips stir fried in garlic with enoki mushrooms: the pea tips were tender and the mushrooms were delicious(the sauce on top of the mushrooms was sufficient and did not overpower the dish). 6. Crispy chicken with shrimp chips: perfectly fried, crispy chicken -- crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside! 7. Sweet and sour pork chops: excellent dish -- a perfect balance of sweet and sour; pork chops were tender and meaty. 8. Steamed tilapia with ginger, scallion, soy sauce and hot oil: wonderfully steamed tilapia(which I usually don't care for because tilapia has a "muddy" aftertaste) without any fishy or funky aftertaste. 9. Fried rice: I'm sure that this was good, but I was too full at this point to eat another bite. 10. Silken tofu in syrup("sugar water"): I do have a "dessert stomach". The soft, silky tofu in the light syrup was a satisfying end to our Chinese New Year feast! I will be back with the boys fairly soon! read more

I was introduced to this very local Chinese Restaurant by my "Calgary Aunty" ( this is our term of endearment to this lovely lady ). Our Calgary Aunty is as local as you can get as she has been in this city of over 4 decades! She took us here about 3 years ago for dinner, and we were very impressed with the authenticity of the food and the homey feel of a neighbourhood restaurant. The place is not fancy, in fact its very dated, but still clean and tidy, the waitresses were very friendly and fast. At both occasions, we had steamed fish as one of our main course, the first time was the Rock Fish ( steamed with ginger & green onion ), the most recent time I asked the Chef to make a special Black Bean Sauce with added Chilli and top that on the fish, both were cooked to perfection and very fresh! In Cantonese cooking, one can see how good the Chef is by asking them to make very very simple dishes, these are in fact the hardest to make if it is made perfectly! As steaming dishes can easily over cook the item, it is years of experience that will let you know when it is done! Recommendation: When ordering, check with the server first to see what is fresh ( seafood items ) that day, also ask them which vegetable she recommends, as it is very common for small restaurants to buy what is the freshest and in season and make special dishes for that day, so do ask and you will get the best of the day!! read more

This place was packed on Saturday night but with some reservations managed to accommodate a large group of us. They have a pretty vast and authentic menu and we ordered a bunch of different things that were all solid and had a delightful homemade quality to it. Portions are plentiful too. My personal favorites were the braised brisket with daikon, the wet beef flat noodles, and peking duck. The peking duck is crisp skinned, not too fatty with tender meat, artfully cut and comes with pancakes and some cucumber. It also comes with a duck bone soup that is very flavorful and refreshing, and that's saying something as I normally don't like soup.The wet noodles come with plenty of gravy, some carrots, little beef and some bok choy but lets face it - when you order this, you just care about the noodles and there's no shortage of that here. And the brisket with daikon is tender and just barely holding together with chunks of daikon that are fork tender. They do fried rice fine, albeit unspectacular. Dry fried green beans with ground pork is a large plate of the string beans with some soy sauce spiced ground meat that's quite enjoyable as a palate cleanser. Sweet and sour pork is fried crisp with just enough not gloopy sauce. A little bit too authentic for me is the fried shrimp with salted egg. The salted egg is a bit too overpowering so I would recommend it only if you really like salted eggs or want to slap some chili oil on it to balance it out. It's easy to see why this place is so packed so try to get a reservation if you plan on coming. Update - our family ended up eating here for two more days too, so got to try a few more noteworthy dishes. The shrimp egg scramble is good, a mountain of scrambled eggs with plump shrimp that's nice and light. Their white cut chicken is very well done - clean meat with a vibrant ginger onion sauce. The bbq pork and jellyfish (strange combo I know...) is pretty good too - the fatty extra crunchy pork is a fantastic exercise in culinary delights from taste and textural contrast. They also have this deep fried tofu custard dish that I've never seen anywhere with a sauce and broccoli that is now unofficially my favorite vegetarian dish. read more

My husband and I dropped in while in the neighbourhood and it was full of Chinese - big round tables and a few smaller ones. The food was absolutely scrumptious! Large portions, all under $20. I've been here several times before for their stir-fried rice/noodle, congee dishes and they are one of the better ones in the NW (Shanghai Palace is also great). This time I ordered a specialty dish called Poon Choi to ring in the Chinese New Year with family and friends. They seem to have this available around CNY on an annual basis and Poon Choi is a traditional Chinese dish for special events. You basically call in and pre-order a day or two before you want it and when you arrive you pay for the food and also leave a $20 refundable deposit once you return the pot. I ordered the six person version (smallest available) which cost $200, there is also a larger version available for more $$$. In the dish there was abalone (6 small pieces which are counted when you pick up your food), roast duck, chicken, lobster balls, shrimp, dried scallops, Chinese mushroom, taro, pork belly, fat choi, fish cake, fish balls, sea cucumber and braised radish. On the side they provide a container of thick, rich sauce which you pour over everything when you are ready to serve. The idea is to put the pot on a portable stove set to low at the middle of the table, pour the sauce over top and each person has a bowl of rice to accompany the food and you dig in family style. The food was good in general considering the variety. It is understandably difficult to get everything right, but overall it was tasty. A few people thought the protein to veggie ratio wasn't good and they cheaped out (everything was propped up by lots of radishes and braised veggies). But they are one of the few places in Calgary that do this (I think I found about five other Chinese restaurants that offer this), so props to them and considering it's a special occasion dish with some expensive ingredients it was worth it to me. This is also available for dine-in customers, however you still need to pre-order ahead of time (and probably want to make reservations anyways). As mentioned, this is only available around CNY time. read more

First time dining in this very tidy restaurant and no regrets at all. Food is great and service is awesome. Place was not difficult to find and parking was easy. Their ginger beef is the best I've tasted so far and the peking style pork was super yummy. We've had other dishes too and they're all magnificent. Too bad didn't get the chance to take some pics of the food. I was just so hungry and dug in right away. Highly recommended. And will definitely be back. We decided to try this restaurant for our New Year's dinner. We thought it would be Golden Princess but it's now changed ownership and it's called China Palace. We managed to get 1 of 2 tables left as we didn't make a reservation for dinner. We ordered the Peking Duck 3 course special, a special vege/pork/bamboo shoots/dry scallops dish and a steamed tofu dish with little anchovies and cut-up chillies in an oil/soya sauce. The Peking Duck special consisted of the duck and wraps, duck tofu soup and fried rice with duck pieces. Great authentic Chinese food! I must say, though, better make a reservation. I've had the deep fried tofu with salted egg yolk batter. Deep fried tofu is amazing, as silky smooth as you can get it- a definite sign of good technique and good quality tofu. Dau Mew (snow pea leaves) is on the menu but the last few times I've tried to order it they were out. This time around I tried the 7 spice short ribs, unfortunately this dish was uninteresting and bland so I would give it a pass. Since they were out of snow pea leaves they did up some chinese broccoli in garlic sauce for me. Again technique shines through - vegetables cooked perfectly with a nice balance of garlic all around. Made reservations and preordered 10 course meal for Mothers day. When we got there they havent even set up our table. Took long time for the food to arrive, about 45 mins, even though we pre-booked. Tea was lukewarm with no flavor. The appetizer was subpar: the meat was dry and the portion was small for a large appetizer plate. Didnt get the items specified on the menu as we arranged. They replaced pea pod dish with baby Bok Choy without asking us. The lobster had several pieces of just shell as if they took out the meat. The fried rice had little to no fried egg. The steamed fish was small. They gave us 1/2 bowls of red bean soup for dessert instead of the tofu dessert which we ordered. Service from the lady owner was terrible, poor atttitude. Hinted at us to leave because the next seating had arrived even though they were late serving out our food. The fist time I went to China Palace It was with my daughter who was at 14 at the time and has quite the pallet and can be quite critical in restaurants but she loved it!! I also did too. the food was made from scratch and on pint I had to leave extra tip just for the chef. The menu was written in Chinese but they all had pictures and numbers so I knew what I was ordering anyway. I have visited this restaurant several times afterward and have taken a liking to their chicken wings which are not even on the menu anymore but when I about them they always offer to make me up an order. We were in Calgary 2 weeks ago to start our journey to Banff and Japer. One of our friends always look for Chinese restaurants no matter where he was (including Spain, Germany). I found this place by searching through Yelp. We had dinner here the first night. We were pleasantly surprised by its menu. It was comprehensive and has a lot of unusual dishes that you won't find in most Cantonese restaurants in NJ/NY. Naturally we picked the ones we don't get at home. They were all very good and in giant portion. The day we returned to Calgary to depart the next day for NY, we went for dinner here again. This time we ordered the crispy duck. The pancake was very good and authentic. But the duck is a little bland and the skin was not crispy. The price was very reasonable. I would have given it a 5 had the dishes been a little more salty. It was little bland for my taste. But I was glad I didn't detect any MSG which I am allergic to. read more
