The Chinese name of this restaurant sounds exactly like 豔遇 (Yàn Yù), which translates to a "romantic encounter" or "fling." It's a pretty funny name for a restaurant, but it definitely made us a bit skeptical about how serious they were about their cooking. We came here specifically because it has "Szechuan" in the name, but we are almost certain Szechuan cuisine is not their actual specialty--at least, not compared to typical, authentic Szechuan spots. Here is a breakdown of what we ordered: Ants Climbing a Tree (螞蟻上樹 - Glass noodles with minced pork) & Kung Pao Chicken (宮保雞丁): Both of these were just fine. The flavors didn't feel very cohesive--it tasted like the meat was just meat and the veggies were just veggies, rather than everything being cooked together to build flavor. Still, they were okay. Soup Dumplings (小籠包 - Xiao Long Bao): These were questionable. We noticed some grayish, coagulated blood seeping out from the pork filling inside the dumplings, which was a bit of a "yikes" moment. Fuqi Feipian (夫妻肺片 - Szechuan Sliced Beef and Offal in Chili Sauce): This was a disappointment and off the mark. Typically, this dish features meat deeply pre-marinated in rich chili oil and numbing Szechuan peppercorns (花椒). Instead, this tasted exactly like standard braised beef shank and offal (滷牛腱 牛雜) just sitting in some diluted chili oil. We ended up skipping the rest of this dish entirely. Looking around, I noticed most of the other tables were ordering entirely different things, so perhaps they excel at non-Szechuan dishes. Overall, it gets a 3. This review is from a skeptic that has been burned a couple of times from TikTok influencers who say a restaurant is a "must-try" and then they are really not. I saw a TT on this resto and their special Spicy Crab so we went to check it out as the dish looked really good. We ordered it and with Mild spicy. You can select Medium or Very spicy but being timid, we said mild and then we can move up next time. We also ordered their Beef / Green Beans and Veggie sizzling rice. 1. Parking - as you pull up, you will find a very small parking lot with about 6 stalls. This in itself is not a very big deal as there is plenty of street parking surrounding this spot. 2. Service: Very welcoming and efficient. The lady showed us to our booth. They actually have two sides to this place, the bigger side is the preferred side. But they also have an overflow section with about 4 booths and it may be good if you want privacy. She gave us the "regular" lunch menu but when I asked for the Spicy Crab, she went and got the order form for this dish alone. This is where you put down what spice level. You can also select Curry. 3. Food - unbelievably good. It was everything it was hyped up to be. I have attached a picture of the dish before we demolished it. The flavor bombs are at the bottom - you really need to spoon that over the crab so you get the full flavor. This is a unique dish - I have not seen it anywhere else in Calgary. The other two dishes were also at least 9/10's. Very well done. The speed of the delivery was also very good, it was not like we waited more than 10 minutes for the food. 4. Overall - we are sold. This was a great recommendation and we will definitely be back. In fact, we laughed about ordering one of these for each next time and just taking out what we can't finish so we can have leftovers for later or the next day. Yes, it's that good. read more

I've seen a ton of pictures of the crab pot on Instagram. People seem to either rave about it or hate it. We ordered two crabs with lotus root, wood ear mushroom and two orders of yam noodles, extra spicy ($60). We also ordered the pork buns ($12). This was enough food for 4 people. I can handle my spice and extra spicy was too much for me. The crab itself was not meaty and likely frozen. For the price, it was fine. I loved the lotus root, mushrooms and yam noodles. All three ingredients went really well together. Buns were greasy and flavourless. Also ratio of meat to bun were off. I'd go again, but with more people and request regular spice. read more

We ordered from here on Skip. Unfortunately while hoping for some great Chinese takeout of familiar dishes we always order on takeout, we got food that we were not happy with. Cantonese Chow Mein was lacking flavour. The Salt and Pepper. Chicken was not crispy, lacked a lot of flavour needed more salt and seasoning and was more like breaded chicken balls then good season crispy Salt and Pepper chicken - it also had no peppers and onion slices in the dish. The Lemon Chicken we are familiar with is golden brown deep fried chicken cutlets cut in to strips with a Lemon sauce on the side. The one this restaurant served is the same chicken balls as the salt and pepper chicken and tossed in a sweet lemon sauce that again is lacking flavour and quite bland. We would not recommend this place and we will not be ordering from here again. Big thumbs down. read more

Everything was delicious; I wish I remembered the names of the dishes that everyone ordered but unfortunately I do not. The servers spoke limited english but always had a smile on their face. They were attentive when filling our water glasses. My only critique is that I prefer spicier dishes when a restaurant has szechuan in their name. Had the wonton soup, spring roll, most of the s&s chicken, and some of the fried rice, taking the rest home. Pork fried rice FYI. Everything was great. Good tea too. The dumplings are hand rolled and some of the best I've ever had. Also had some sweet and spicy soup and it was fantastic. The service was really fast and the staff were very kind and helpful. My wife and I arrived at this establishment at 8:50 on a Friday night. We were given a number for seating (behind 3 other couples) and waited for 30 minutes for a seat. The other couples were seated; However, when it was our turn, we were told that they had "run out of food", and we would not be seated or served and were asked to leave. It is also of note, that I was the only white person in the restaurant (wife is Chinese), so being asked to leave was rather suspicious. This event was the worst customer service I have ever received in Calgary and it ruined our evening. read more

Solid 3.5 stars. While Chinese-owned, wouldn't go out of my way saying it's a must-go restaurant, but it's clean, above average taste. With its current location in a residential area (but Spiller is a somewhat big road), I would say they cater more to the western market. But i'll digress. Ordered the honey garlic spareribs, because one, it's the safest to measure against, and two, it did smell good in the air when I walked in. Like I mentioned, it's not bad, above average, and would consider eating again. By the time you leave the tax, tip, and now it's over $18. Exterior-wise, looks like a hut, with its parking lot. I've been coming to Kam Han for about 10 years and absolutely love their food. While its definitely westernized Chinese cuisine its heads and shoulders above every other similar restaurant. I live a good 40 minutes away and I happily make the drive! The restaurant itself is always quite clean and the staff very friendly & attentive. They have a very large menu and always a few daily specials. The last visit there we had a good mix. Started with the hot & sour soup, then the pan fried wontons (these are AMAZING little bundles of flavor...not your normal wontons), house special steamed rice, chicken with beans and spicy szechuan beef. The soup was loaded with all sorts of good stuff. Rice similarly packed with vegetables, egg and chicken. The mains were freshly cooked to order and oh so tasty! I don't want to end on a negative not but it should be worth mentioning that the Kam Han in Avenida Place might share a name but thats about it. Have been there a few times and their food was always disappointing. Stick to the location on Spiller Road and you'll be happy (and full!). read more

Terrible customer service. AVOID at ANY COST! 3 rounds of nagging from their manager, for a 3 dollar ginger ale. So I took a Ginger Ale from their fridge which sits besides me, with a glass door. I went to the counter and said "I took a ginger ale, can I have 2 glasses?" Somehow the manager turned angry and gave me a speech of " DO not taking anything from the fridge". "OK, OK" then I went back to my table. Minutes later the manager came with the glasses, surprisingly she gave me and my friend another educational speech of "ordering from us, not from the fridge". Recommended by a fellow foodie who seems to have a knack for calling Asian places correctly. She recommended this place for the spicy crab. So that is what we ordered. Two crabs deep fried and then doused in spicy sauce accompanied by your choice of veggies, other seafood, tofu etc. The first time we ordered it we were shocked at the price point for two dungarees crabs. It is cheap but recognize that it is probably frozen I believe (so not live) based on the texture. Having said that it is still pretty tasty. You don't get two complete crabs though. We suspect that they buy the warrior crabs that have lost a leg or clamp or two in a fight. So you probably get 75% 80% of a full crab. But still it is a good deal. Flavours are nice. They throw in all of the extras at the end similar to how the higher end "western" place on Centre street does it but in a bag. I'd argue the flavours are more intense at Kam Han but I think it is individual preference because the other place has a more east coast "dunkem" in butter and garlic flavoured sauce. We like to take the spicy leftovers home to throw in some of our 3 minute noodles as a nice add in. Don't expect anything fancy here. Just a pig out place to crack your crab legs. You will need something sweet at home for dessert after to offset the spicy grease that the crabs come in. We haven't tried to venture off on the other dishes but they looked tasty although 80% of the customers seem to be ordering the crab. So stick with he crab for a sure thing. Very good!! It's one of the best Chinese foods I have had in Calgary !! The portions are really good! You'll be filled for sure and you can even take some food to go if you don't eat that much! We ordered the menu for 6 people and it was a lot of food! All delicious!! I would definitely go back there on a day I'll be hungry enough to enjoy all that great food! This used to be our favourite place, when owned by the previous owner. We went at least every two weeks for years. We even kept going for a while with the new owners. Recently however, we decided to order take-away. When we ordered, they said they wouldn't honour the special that was advertised on our recently delivered flyer. They also wouldn't honour the 10% cash discount, also advertised on their take-away menu. When I asked why not, they started to get nasty on the phone and said they didn't want customers who were difficult. Seriously??? This is how they treat long-term loyal customers? My friend took me here last night, cuz she knew I love fish, and this restaurant made great baked fish/crab. But I have shellfish allergies, so we didn't try the crab. I would say it's perfect if it wasn't that salty, but ummm I think if we ordered the crab, it wouldn't be as salty as the fish. Anyway, I would totally recommend this restaurant. I described this to friends as ordering a pepperoni/mushroom pizza, and getting sausage/onion, but finding it was still really good. Same thing for this place--None of the dishes I ordered followed the traditional recipe, but they were still pretty good. Sweet/Sour Soup: Was neither sweet nor sour and had a gravy-like brown broth instead of the typical red vinegar influenced broth, but it was still good. Gong Bao Ji Ding (Emperor's Chicken or something) was sweet and sour chicken. But they were nice people, the food was tasty and it was plentiful. read more

Our first time trying this place. Ordered out and we were very disappointed.The first strange thing was the delivery lady tried to open our door before ringing the bell or knocking. When I did open the door she actually pushed her way into my house( found this very rude and unprofessional).Food was at best mediocre. We ordered 4 vegetable mix with cashews and we didn't get any cashews. For 5 dishes our order came to $70 dollars. We were not given the free item promised for spending over $45 or $65.
