I just had one the most disappointing meals in recent memory at China Star in Harlingen. The service was meh and the food was worse. I had eaten a late lunch, so ordered the calamari appetizer and "Gourmet Chinese Vegetables." The calamari were like rubbery donuts dripping with grease; the only dipping sauce available was ranch dressing. They reminded me of the Chinese food we would get in the 1960s. The gourmet vegetables was a stir fry of about 80% broccoli with a few mushrooms, slices of bok choi, slivers of zucchini and a sprkinkling of snow peas. Vegetables? Yes. Gourmet? Nope. I can't say much about the heaping bowl of fried rice other than after 2 bites I knew I wouldn't have a third. When the woman staffing the front counter asked me if everything was ok, I said "No." When she asked why I said the food wasn't very good. She turned away and left. This was my last night in town and it honestly left a bad taste in my mouth, unlike all the other meals I had over my 4-day stay. read more

Egg roll was good even after my winning the struggle with the plastic soy sauce packet (note for next time: carry a pair of scissors). I was served a side of sweet red sauce (for dipping?) along with perfect looking fried chicken pieces that were a bit tough. The rice was super tasty! This is the first time we've eaten here in probably over three years. The food has really been improved a lot since our last visit. A friend said that they had improved a lot so we gave them another try. I ordered delivery today and we were very pleased with everything. Very good flavor and generous potions on all of our order. Good food, great service, nice ambiance, awesome prices. We came for the lunch buffet (available only Monday - Friday 11am - 3 pm). The staff is always friendly and welcoming. They check back on you frequently. I recommend their sweet tea for a beverage. It's got just the right amount of sweetness (at least in MY opinion). I also highly recommend the coconut shrimp. If you would like to sample many of their dishes before committing to the menu size portions then I recommend coming in for their lunch buffet. I'm extremely picky about Chinese restaurants. A really good Omen when we walked up to the front door, was the top performer health award for October 2012. The buffet costs $7.95 per person At lunch and was a really good selection of fresh Vegetables chicken shrimp beef and other assorted dishes. Our waiter was very attentive....plates were cleaned up quickly and the restaurant .....most important of all .....was spotless. This is hands down my favorite Chinese restaurant in the area. The service is great, the atmosphere is pleasant and the food is actually cooked and seasoned right. I've had their dinner portions and they are substantial, but I prefer to come for their daily lunch buffet. I started coming here when I started dating my boyfriend who lives in the Harlingen area. His family has been coming here for 10 years and I can see why: the food is all delicious, the staff is friendly and fast, the decor and music fits the Chinese theme, and the portions are large (leftovers!) I always get the China Star Chicken extra hot (which makes it just barely spicy) with steamed rice and the hot and sour soup. Most importantly, they don't use MSG in the food! Pretty poor service for a restaurant that had an overflowing parking lot. Ordered Fried Rice with Chinese Veggies .. got A plate of veggies with no rice...hmm? Ordered Beef in Oyster Sauce got Shrimp in some horrific light brown sauce, didn't taste anything like Oyster Sauce. No condiments packed for my egg rolls only got hot mustard. Sad thing is that they repeated my order correctly. Covid is an OPPORTUNITY for restaurants to shine a chance to deliver to New patrons. There's NO excuse for inaccuracies in food orders, especially carry out. Even though the remainder of the order was correct, I will not return to this China Star. The staff is so friendly and the ladies in the front are excellent to talk to. Don't expect delivery, only pizza delivers in Harlingen, Texas. I always get a dinner special, it's always more than enough food for left overs. The fried rice is the best, hands down. The buffet is good...I just wish they had a bit more variety. As for the food in general: delicious. They have a specialty dish, China Star chicken...oh man, is it good. I usually get it "medium" since it's a spicy dish. I recommend it. There have been some changes lately. I think the management switched hands or something. The former manager/owner was really sweet. He was a young man who would talk about his wife who would travel to Taiwan (?) often. Now, the manager/owner is a middle-aged woman who doesn't always appear happy. I've even heard her snapping at some of the waitresses--in front of customers. Just not really professional, in my opinion. But there have been other changes. For one, they used to have packaged ice cream for the buffet...haven't seen that. They also used to have fountain drinks...now it's bottled. (Not a huge deal, but the thing is if you're a big drinker you no longer have your refills.) What is especially noteworthy is the new manager's attitude. She is rude. Plain and simple. I mean, she has a nice streak to her, but it doesn't shine through very much. If you're ordering over the phone, 9 times out of 10 she's the one taking it...and she is NOT pleasant. She cuts you off, rushes you, and demands you just wait until you get to the restaurant for some things. One time I was asking about a dish, and she cut me off, spat out the ingredient list, and said I should just go to the restaurant to place the order so I could take a look at the dish for myself--at the buffet. Then she insisted that I should just order a buffet plate to go instead, since there's more of a variety. (Makes sense, but again, rude. Not to mention the buffet cost a lot more than the dish I was asking about. ) Today, I was placing an order to pick up. I asked about the tea, paused for a second on whether I should just order a soda, and then (wait for it...) she impatiently said I could just wait to choose my drink when I got to the restaurant. *period...done...can I hang up now?* Oh, and one more thing. She judges the amount of food to people ratio. She'll mutter things under her breath, like "ohh lot of food..." and "really?" if you only ask for a certain number of forks for your order. No Shame. China Star is probably the best Chinese restaurant in the Valley. For one, most "Chinese" restaurants in the Valley are buffet only - so that's not a tough obstacle. But at China Star, there is a buffet. However, I venture to say that most of the restaurant's business comes from people actually sitting down and ordering off a menu. The food is fantastic, to say the least. The staff is excellent, and the owners are delightful - and they are always there! The chicken egg foo yung is delicious, as are the vegetarian options. I have had the buffet, which I enjoy because I can get my fill of Hot Sour Soup and Egg Rolls. I have had their Mongolian Beef which I believe is the best tasting dish ever. I have had P.F. Chang's in the past and had their Peppered Beef, but I was not very impressed and had to immediately come and have it from here. They have excellent service, who always greet you with a smile. I have come here since I was literally a newborn, only 3 days old, and have never stopped since. The waitress that was there when I was born still continues to work there to this very day. The promptness of the food's arrival also make it a great choice for me. If you ever want to have great quality Chinese food or Sushi, you must come here and try all they have to offer. read more

It's a beef broth rather than a chicken broth, and the won-ton noodles are so fresh they'll slap your face. I've been eating in this restaurant since I was ten years old. I love lo mein noodles so I ordered them. They are a bit soggy for my taste otherwise good and I also ordered a bar-b-que ribs (4) appetizer and didn't realize it until I got home that the ribs were a meal in itself.
