Because of Escollera's popularity with tourists AND locals alike, it gets busy so have a few things in mind: (1) give your name+last name to the host inside (2) if you can grab a high-top outside, go for it and get a Starter bite while you wait, (3) someone will yell out your last name, then (4) you're in. Attention from all the servers is definitely here and each offered individual tid-bit on what we ordered. Dozen oysters (or "12 pieces") were meaty and juicy with the right amount of oyster liquor. What's more, I know the oysters hubs and I have been getting on the East Coast in the States are good- but these here in Spain's Southern Coast are mind-blowing. Horseradish and mignonette? They're obsolete in these parts. You will get Tabasco as an alternate (for hubs) and some individually-packaged red wine. It did just fine. Prawns were good but the Sardines were excellent with a slightly crunchy-garlicky exterior. The oysters took it a bit over from what we've experienced during our stay. But come to think of it, comparing the quality and straight-from-the-sea catch to the East Coast, they were worth the €54. Skip the juicy-flavored sangria and go for a red or white instead. In essence, it's all about the seafood here.

There were two older gents having pints of Guinness on the patio when we came in, but the bar was entirely empty. We had a nice chat with the sweet and friendly Venezuelan bartender. Asked him how the season was going, he said "nonexistent." It's totally dead in the winter in Torremolinos, the beach party town. We didn't have any food that even, just two pints, one Guinness, one Stella Artois. Menu looked to be standard pub grub (toasties, burgers, chips - meaning fries - with things on them, etc.), note the chef is English, but the owner is Irish, and those two terms are not interchangeable, so we were told. There's a snooker table in the back, have always wanted to learn how to play, one of these days maybe. Apparently, there's a rather sizable expat community here in southern Spain, something about the perfect weather. We felt welcome and comfortable, def you should pop in for a pint.

While taking a tour of the Lustau winery, our guide mentioned a long list of places we should see on our short trip in Jerez. At the top of his list was el Tabanco el Pasaje. In fact, he recommended we go there because not only do they have their own barrels, one of them contains Boatina. It's a sherry you can't find in the US. Sold! Seeing that we traveled all the way to Southern Spain to actually drink sherry and visit wineries, this sounded like the perfect bar to relax in at the end of the day. Especially because we could try sherries that we simply haven't ever had at home. The barman (who was the same each visit) was really kind and helpful. He was always talking to locals but would pause them politely, step away, and take our order. Just $1.50 for a pour! We tried Botaina (yum!) we had Amontillados, we had Palo Cortados, we had it all. And each time it was $1.50 and each time he stepped away to pour a big tall pour into a little sherry glass straight form a drippy, sticky, gorgeous barrel. And don't forget the little tapas! With your order of sherry he slides a basket of little mini bread pieces your way. They're like teeny tiny baguettes the perfect size for a mouse, but crunchy and hard like salad croutons. The bar also had lots of old photos, maps, and nostalgic items along the walls. There were posters and banners of famous people, of flamenco dancers, bullfighters, and more. It was as 'Jerez' as it gets. Truly traditional! No English, no menu, no fuss. In fact, I'm trying to recall if they even had spirits for sale. I think it was only sherry but they have 6 or so barrels in the main bar and even more around the bar. Lots to choose from. And if you don't like sherry, why on earth are you in Jerez?! After you get your order you can stand at the bar, grab a table, or wrap around to the other side and sit in a little cubby area with even more stored sherry barrels. Each time we came we tried something new and each time we came we sat somewhere new. I loved the little low tables and the low stools to sit on. It was almost kid-sized furniture. It was cute, it was comfy and it was super casual. Since it's a local pub and most of the patrons were men, I was a little weary of the shared restroom. Turns out it was super clean! Yay for that! Some nights there's flamenco performances, other nights they close. We weren't sure if they have regular business hours or if they shut down when it's quiet and they want to go home. Either way we loved it and when we come back to Jerez this will be our first and last stop of the trip. Highly recommend that people come here for a local, friendly sherry experience. Oh! And free WIFI!

I love Southern Spain and I am not normally a fan of Brit run bars / cafes…read more However I am going to make an exception for the Anchor Cafe in La Herradura, a lovely unspoilt town on the Costa Tropical. Whilst staying in La Herrdura recently, I was desperate to find a bar that would show the Lions rugby games - not an easy task, as the town is more of a destination for Spanish taking their holidays, rather than northern Europeans. So I guessed I had to break my normal rule and find a Brit bar. I popped into the Anchor, and could not have found a more welcoming place. Its run by a really nice charming English family, who were more than happy to make sure the game was on, at a volume where you could hear the commentary. They also served a different tapas dish free with every drink. There was such a good vibe in there that we visited a few times even when the rugby was not on, to enjoy the ambience and the great food a mix of traditional Spanish with English if you wanted it. It also sits right on the beach so you've got fab views / weather etc. What really makes this a great place is that the owners and their son in law who doubled up as the head barman and head chef couldn't do enough for you.
