I have been traveling the world for over 30 years and have stayed in hundreds of budget accommodations across four continents, including in developing countries. With that experience, I can honestly say this is the most "budget" place I have ever stayed at -- but unfortunately not in a positive sense. The room was extremely basic: two beds (one of them broken), a TV, a fire extinguisher (!), a sink, and a barely functioning toilet. That was essentially the entire furnishing. The windows were kept shut with wooden sticks, and the front door was so poorly fitted that it repeatedly blew open during the night, even when locked. The most serious issue, however, was cleanliness. There was a strong, persistent smell throughout the property -- a mix of damp basement and chemicals -- which caused us allergic reactions and remained in our clothes even weeks later, despite multiple washes. The room appeared not to have been properly cleaned for a long time, and we found several dead insects. After leaving, we also noticed live insects in our luggage, which we had not experienced before this stay. Unfortunately, the staff did not improve the experience. We did not feel welcome and there was no sense of hospitality. Interactions were distant and uninterested, and at times downright uncomfortable. There was no apparent willingness to assist or make our stay more pleasant, which is disappointing, as smiles and good service can often compensate for limited facilities. By contrast, one of my best stays ever was actually in a sleeping bag on a mat in a cave in the Tunisian desert, where it was the hosts, not the facilities, who made the experience truly memorable. We prepaid for a long stay, but after just one night, we decided to leave. Rather than returning, we chose to spend the rest of our vacation sleeping in our small rental car, which felt like the better, safer, and cleaner option. I've stayed here 2 out of my 3 Motorcycle trips to the Big Bend area. Those 2 trips, we didn't make reservations, just stopped and ask for vacancies. It's perfect for this type of trip, just a bunch of guys, on bikes, touring the area. On our second stay I brought my telescope to stargaze. That was very cool, plus we saw a coyote wondering by. That was also pretty cool. It's not for everybody but it's really good for us. The rooms were clean with a good location to hit Big Bend. I would be 3 for 3 but when I was planning this week's trip, I couldn't remember their name to make a reservation. read more

I was spending two full days in Big Bend National Park. So I was looking for a place to spend one night. I did my research before traveling and found Chisos Mining Co. Motel. Within the Big Bend area there aren't too many options to stay, but this place was perfect for me! I reserved an economy room for one. They mentioned there was no TV, which was fine because the atmosphere and setting was so nice and peaceful. My room was clean and had everything I needed for a good nights sleep. After I checked in, I was recommended to travel 4-5 miles down the road to Terlingua Ghost Town for dinner at the Starlight Theater restaurant. The dinner and time hanging out at Starlight Theater was great as well. I met up with a few tourists/friends I had met while exploring Big Bend. At sunset, I sat in a chair outside my room and was truly able to appreciate where I was and how far I had traveled. It's times like these, being at Big Bend National Park on the Texas/Mexico border...that you know never to take life for granted. read more

Basic accommodations in a remote place. Chiso mining co is a collection of somewhat ramshackle buildings including cabins, economy rooms (a/c but no tech) and economy plus rooms (tv and wifi). Not rustic old west exactly, just a bed & a (poorly constructed) shower. That bed was surprisingly comfortable but the climate ctrl unit was a bit noisy. Bonus local flavor points for the howling animal at 4am, I have no idea what species lol. Very friendly people, you can even arrange a late check in. We had to mail in a check to make a reservation. Terlingua offers 3G cell service, gas, bars and several restaurants, it's not THAT remote. read more

After doing research on all reviews I could find online, I have done well preparation before my trip. I think it helps a lot for building up good living experience while staying in here. We reserved condo unit 32, it was a spacious unit with large kitchen and great view right in front of the house! We enjoyed watching stars every single night, and we saw sunrise in the morning. You don't have to wakeup very early in the morning to see sunrise since there are several mountains, so the sun won't climb up the mountains until 7:20(we went there in March) Item list for myself: - Sleeping bag and duvet cover: if you plan to sleep on the futon, this is what you need. Also it's good to bring your own pillow. They provide cover, blanket and pillow, too. I am allergic to dust, so it is safer for me to have my own supplies. -Towels: There were towels in the condo, too, but they were placed in bathroom, and there were some small bugs in the bathroom at night. So I prefer to use my towel. - Cooking pan: (only if you are going to cook) They provided all kinds of kitchenware, that was great! However one of my friends was picky about the scratches on provided pans, so we have our own pan. So just set your expectation as a basic motel, then you will find out this place is out of your expectation! I won't recommend book condo unit during raining day, it is located up the hill. The path will be muddy. This is why the view was great! My recommendation for this motel is I hope they can at least put availability calendar online, which will attract more potential customers. ( All of my friends didn't want to book this motel because of the too basic website) And if they can send at least confirmation sms text after reservation, that would be great! ( Now everything is just oral agreement over the phone ) Other than that, this is a good place to stay, it's just 5 mins drive to big bend entrance, close to stores and gas station. I stayed here recently in one of the cabins (~100/night), and overall it was an acceptable experience. The cabin was really spacious! It had three beds, I believe two were full sized and was was a twin, though I may be mistaken. It had a full kitchen. The pots and pans weren't super clean, and there were dead bugs in one of them. There was no television, and no wifi, though some cabins closer to the office do have wifi. The lady who took our reservation was great about explaning the pros/cons and features of each type of room. It is in the desert, so naturally they ask that you conserve water. I'm blanking on the reason (either delicate plumbing or septic system I believe), you cannot flush your toilet paper - you need to throw it out in the trash. I know that's totally normal in some places but it skeeved me out a little. There are tiny bunnies running everywhere! Super cute. The location was pretty great - just a five minute drive to Big Bend! read more

I got an economy room. It ended up costing me about 70 dollars a night or something around there. The room was neat, clean and relatively comfortable. It was very spartan though, but I knew this going in as I got the most basic room available. This wasn't a big deal for me though, as all I needed was a place to leave my things during the day, shower and drop off my stuff. And a clean bed. The motel accomplished that at a fair price. It was close to the park, relatively close to the gas station, restaurants and the ghost town. The staff was extremely friendly. I talked quite a bit with the front office lady about my trip, got food recommendations and she even let me use the office phone once to make a personal call to let someone know I arrived there safely. On a shoestring budget, it's definitely bang for the buck. Not really unique to the motel, but at night you can see every star in the sky and you get a magnificent view of the sunrise outside of the room. Very few exterior lights at all on the motel. Place loses a star for the archaic means of reserving a room. I had to call in and then mail a check. read more

My husband and I had excellent 3 night stay here in September. This was our first trip to Terlingua and Big Bend and honestly, we decided to stay in this particular place because their website was the most useable of all of the lodging places listed on trip advisor. When I called to ask about availability, the woman working there was extremely helpful and kind, so we were sold. For what we needed, which was basically just a place to sleep, shower, and keep our stuff while we went to the park all day, this place was great. If you're looking for luxury, look elsewhere! We chose a cabin for $106/night. Cabins include a kitchen with basic kitchen equipment, but more motel-like rooms are available for cheaper rates. Our cabin had 2 full beds and one twin, a small table, a fridge, a microwave, coffee maker, and stove. The kitchen had a few pots and pans, utensils, plates, and cups - the essentials. If you need something special, bring your own. Our cabin had a wine opener but it was broken, and our coffee pot had moldy grinds in it from a previous guest, but we told the office and I'm sure it got taken care of. Our cabin was cleaned every day, but you have to clean up your own kitchen mess. The best part of the cabin was the location. There is a picnic table and grill outside, and there are also some chairs for sitting outside (but bring your own lawn chairs if you want a more comfortable sitting experience). The cabins give you some personal space so you can sit outside and watch the sunrise, the bunnies running around, or the millions of stars at night. We were only a few minutes from the entrance to Big Bend National Park, and only a few minutes from several places to eat. If we come back to the area, we'd stay here again! read more

Really, you can't expect "The W" for the location but it was clean, exceptionally friendly, the A/C worked and bug free! Great location (next to Kathy's Kafe) and close to the intersection to go to Big Bend as well as Terligua. And you cannot miss it, it's bright blue next to an even brighter pink (Kathy's - a MUST while you're here) They have ice to buy and fossils. Watch out for the huge cat! She doesn't bother you but she may startle you if you aren't ready for it. read more

We rented a funky cabin that was perfect for our needs: 2 double beds and a twin bed, bathroom with a shower, window air conditioner unit, kitchenette with a full size refrigerator/freezer, stove, microwave oven, sink, dishes, pots and pans, glasses, silverware, etc. The cabin was very clean and the staff were helpful and accommodating. Cabins are quiet and away from the motel rooms. The motel is in Terlingua, just outside Big Bend National Park. I will stay there again if I need lodging in that area. read more

Near restaurants, a great little grocery store and Big Bend. Plus the actual hotel is in the mountains! We were able to sit at the picnic table outside our little personal cabin (the cabins have kitchens in them! And room to sleep so many people!) and watch the hundreds of stars come out. Got a basic room and paid 75 bucks. Had to get rid of a bugs on the bed. The room "looks" tidy but in reality it's not. We brought our pet and the lady working at night that checked us in didn't say anything regarding "pet fees" however the next morning another lady called my phone and with an attitude asked if we had a pet in our room so I replied yes. To which she stated I had to come to the front office now and pay the fee. Our 2 babies are 3 and 7 pounds and the fee was 45.00. To my husbands surprise when he stated we have NEVER been charged for them before the lady stated that it's "policy" haha apparently it's only enforced some of the time. For what we paid between the room and pet fee we could've stayed at the nicer eldorado in the ghost town. read more

This was wonderful. My boyfriend and I felt comfortable to do what we wanted to do while staying here. For $59 per night including hotel tax---this was a steal. We felt safe and it was only 4 miles from the Teralingua Ghost Town where the locals hang out at sunset, and 8 miles from Big Bend. I really liked this place. Warning, Bait and Switch, Very Unethical Business! After making reservation three months prior to our four day stay, including sending a personal check for the nonrefundable 50% deposit, upon arrival, we were charged an additional $25 per night. When I asked why, the response was: "Our rates increased earlier this week, and if you have an issue with it, check the website" They pulled the same trick when I made the reservation, but for only $5 per night, which I was OK with. This operation is a scam like I've never seen in the hotel business. After doing some research, I learned that this has become a common practice for the Chisos Mining Motel. As for the cabin, it was OK, but the windows were filthy, water in the coffee machine with no telling how long it was in there, uncomfortable beds, somewhat clean, This property was definitely NOT worth the price, especially when they increase the rent upon arrival. This place should have more than a 3.5 stars. First, let me say that, I am a wee bit picky. As a family we enjoy unique but 4+ star accommodations. When I came across this location I saw 3.9 stars and read the reviews. I was hesitant. But, called and reserved a condo for $140/night. Here is my official review: Go. Stay in condo #36. You will read all the other reviews and wonder if I am right. I am. Not only is the place incredibly clean, but the sunset view is amazing. Here is the deal. You won't be taking anything home with you. Forks, bedding, coffee maker. These are temporary. You won't be using them forever. Just for the small period of time you are visiting. Nope you can't flush the toilet paper. And, there is only one window unit in the very large bedroom. A tiny 25 inch tv is the only technology besides a small alarm clock. If you can't live with these things temporarily, during your visit, this probably isn't a vacation you should be taking. Or, maybe hit up the $275/night lodge. They don't advertise themselves as a 5 star resort, because they are not. But, it is a wonderfully fantastic off the beaten path little place with great customer service. We will be back to enjoy another vacation. We will again stay in condo #36, and it will most likely be just as amazing. What you won't find from me is unrealistic expectations or ridiculous complaints on how little forks, unfashionable bedding, or my inability to flush toilet paper ruined my family's amazing vacation in one of our Nation's most majestic places. We stayed in a "large cabin." Large is a vast overstatement - it was tiny with the beds taking up all the space available. The website says the large and small cabins have "separate living and sleeping space," however the beds were right up against the tiny outdoor plastic table they provided in the kitchen, and there was no "living space," only cooking and sleeping in the same room. Their website says the "large cabin" accommodates up to 6 people, yet the table provided had seating for 4 with no extra space for anyone else to sit. We had 2 people eating dinner on the beds every evening. The place was not clean. The dishes had to be washed before we could use them. Trash from previous people had been left on the stove. The floors were filthy with dust, and there were goldfish crackers, pizza crust, and a dirty sock covered in dust bunnies under some of the beds (who knows how long they had been there), so they clearly didn't even bother to sweep the floors. There was no outlet in the bathroom, and few outlets in the cabin to use to even charge a phone. When we got there, the lady at the office said she "hadn't been up to turn our heat on yet" (it was in the 30's) and when we got to the cabin the only heat available was 2 tiny decrepit space heaters. They did not even kind of keep the cabin warm. The breaker continually tripped throughout our 4 night stay and all we were using were the 2 provided space heaters and our phone chargers. One night, we couldn't get the breaker to stay back on so we called the office. The maintenance man came and while he did get the breaker to stay on, he also said "just be grateful you have a roof over your head and bundle up." WE PAID FOR THIS ROOF OVER OUR HEADS!!!!! They also had signs on the toilets, expecting you to not flush even toilet paper and provided a tiny trash can instead. The only good thing I have to say is they had hot water. This motel is par for the course. It is no different than most businesses in the area. Everything is old and overpriced! The furnishings are outdated, but the room was very clean. It is carpeted with two full-size beds, a table, two chairs, a TV and an alarm clock. The bathroom is small (not much space by door) and the vanity outlet doesn't work. We had to walk to the outside of the office to get WiFi, but were then able to walk back to room (#4) with it still connected. We had no issues with bugs or rodents. On the flip side: The woman at the front desk wasn't very friendly or helpful. Housekeeping cleaned our rooms while we were away the first day, but they didn't show up until the afternoon the second day. (We came back to the hotel to eat a late lunch because it was too windy to picnic in Big Bend.) read more

Chisos Mining Company Motel is a dump. I stayed in one of the "economy" motel rooms. Boy, howdy - is that an understatement! EVERYTHING is soiled and covered in stains, including the carpet, both chairs, the entire ceiling, etc. I honestly felt like I was in the most disgusting room I've ever stayed in. Wood paneling is coming off the walls. The shower curtain was so yellowed that I think it's never been replaced. Thank god I was only there for one night. Nice views outside, but there's no wonder why it's so cheap. The motel was almost completely empty and I was still given this garbage heap selection of a room. They're lucky they don't have much competition. EW! read more

I've stayed here before. It was simple and pleasant. The staff was also very friendly. I tried to book a room recently and I spoke with an incredibly shady woman. She wanted all of my credit card information, including the security code. When I asked why I had to submit my code over the phone, I was yelled at and hung up on. "There are plenty of other places you can stay." Very true. Every other place has online booking. When there are so many options, why mess with a questionable reservation process. Five stars for the area as much as the hotel. I did an economy room for one night-no tv, Internet etc. very clean, comfortable bed. Slept like a baby. Of course had a great dinner at the Starlite, then a couple of beers on the porch as the sun set over the Chisos. I always enjoy Big Bend and Terlingua. I come in to the park from Marathon and then take the beautiful road to Presidio and up to Marfa. Heck of a scenic road trip. Lots to look at and no one else in the highway. Good spot. read more

I did a solo camping trip to big bend and terlingua and had some last-minute tent issues that forced me to get a hotel. This place is fine for those purposes. I rented a single room with a shower and no TV or Internet. it was insanely outdated... but "modern amenities" is not a common find anywhere in this part of Texas/Mexico. This was more than we expected so it gets the full star rating! New mattresses in the cabin - 2 double beds and 2 singles. The cabin was spotless, had a mini kitchen with much appreciated fridge to keep our water nice and cold. The bathroom was big and stocked with plenty of towels. The setting is gorgeous - loved the easter egg colored cabins on the hillside. Close to what the town offers and enjoyed watching the rabbits near the cabin door. It isn't new, but do you really want to stay in a generic H.I. again when you have a chance to try something as unique as the place you have traveled? read more

We stayed in unit 39 (Sierra Vista) and it was perfect for our visit to Big Bend National Park. The full kitchen, large bedroom, and good-sized bathroom were a nice surprise. Very well maintained inside and out. We loved looking at the stars (even the Milky Way) from the porch. We were able to make breakfast and pack lunches every day. The king-sized bed was very comfortable (we did bring our own pillows). Just a great stay in every way, and we would definitely come back. read more

I'm not sure how pricing compares to other places in the 'area.' In fact, I'm not sure how much we paid for our rooms since I wasn't part of that process. After deciding to visit the Big Bend area, we didn't have much time to find lodging. Normally we'd book rooms well in advance but this was for special circumstances. Anyway, we ended up with rooms 1, 2, & 3 (which are the closest to the office and have 2 double beds) as well as a couple of single rooms out back. The way this place was built so long ago, you get to experience creaky floors and paper thin walls. I had to text my family members next door to let them know that we could hear their entire conversation (and that's with our TV on). The next morning, another family member noted that he could hear (average volume) snoring from the room next door and that he was woken up by the vibrating (only) cell phone on the bedside table ... also in the room next door. Yeah, you hear pretty much everything! The bathroom was minimal with the sink(s) being part of the bedroom. It did have a table and chairs and plenty of space to put your bags, etc. The shower was below average with very sensitive controls. At least we were quick to get hot water; I think the water tank was right out behind our room. The towels provided were a joke. They were as thin as the walls. Were they from the 1970's? I didn't know towels could be made so thin ... nor wear down so thin. I actually ripped one in half while drying off -- no joke. I wonder if it's still in use today. So, bring your own towels. The beds were fine ... not uncomfortable for a single person in a double bed; I brought my own pillow. The heater worked well ... got the small room nice and toasty in a short amount of time. As for that TV -- this isn't the city kids. We got about four (4) channels -- one was just sound, one was picture with that scratchy interference sound, another was Fox News, and the last was USA or TBS (I think). So enjoy that one channel. Do I expect more -- normally yes. But for this remote location where they don't have local channels, etc. and paying for numerous satellite feeds is expensive ... I wasn't too surprised. And finally, we were there for just two (2) nights and they came in after the first night to make the bed and provide more towels. Now it seems odd to complain about receiving such a service but I don't like proprietors in my room with my stuff. I wish they had "Do Not Disturb" signs available but they didn't. Perhaps you have to bring your own. Anyway, I had some of my clothes on the bed and they piled them back on top after making it up. Again, it's one thing for them to be in 'my' room, it's another for them to touch my stuff. read more
