I LOVE this business!!! Everything they make is made right there. The quality is amazing and there is such creativity! And the chocolates and candy is always fresh. Their chocolates are not pretentious, but they are delicious and beautiful. Their English toffee with chocolate & chopped nuts - amazing! Really wish they still made the macadamia turtles. And we buy their personalized Easter eggs every year. My kids still get them in their baskets as adults. The eggs are their favorite part of their Easter baskets. We also get our teacher gifts at Chocolate Storybook. You can't go wrong here. Oh - and they have some adorable gifts that can make a perfect addition. We were in the area and heard about it from friends, so stopped in while my brother and Sister-in-law were visiting. As you might expect in a place like this, there was a great selection of chocolates and pretty much all things sweet. While the prices were a little on the high end, they weren't out of line with other similar places in higher traffic / rent areas. They are known in some reviews for their chocolate covered bacon (what can't be good if it includes bacon and chocolate, right?). While I found the bacon / salt with the chocolate to be a good combination, my wife and I both commented that it would have been even better if the bacon inside was more crispy. I love dark chocolate and sea salt caramel though - and their Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramels were absolutely delicious! Assuming you like sweets since you read this far into the review, you will definitely enjoy a stop here to pick up some local, great tasting and unique sweets! Who doesn't love candy? Diabetics yeah but they can increase their insulin for a while. This place is dee lish us! You name it, it rocks. The pecan caramel turtles are orgasmic. Get yourself a hot cup of joe and melt into oblivion. The woman loves the lemon creams. She milks them like a pot of gold and hides them from us lowly peasants. The Chocolate Storybook has very yummy chocolates and caramel apples. They are located in a convenient location in West Des Moines. It is a cute little retail space plus they have a robust mail order and corporate business. If you are looking for a chocolate or two or you have a large corporate order this is your place. The staff are very friendly and quite knowledgeable. You can even call in and order ahead if you know what you want and it will be ready for you when you arrive. This place is okay. I appreciate that it's a small business and their candy is homemade. But all the chocolate coatings are hard and brittle. Honestly, as a candy lover, I'd rather have a box of Russell Stover. Less expensive, smoother, softer and more flavorful. read more

I live in Seattle, but get to devour these little pieces of heaven every so often. They are quite simply the best chocolates in the world. My girlfriend's gracious mother sends her the chocolate covered caramels on what seems to be a bimonthly schedule at which point I am able to siphon off a slow stream of my own. She also sent a box of their assorted chocolates, and it was the first time I've had one without a bad chocolate in the bunch! Simply amazing. Maybe Costner was right about Iowa...doubtful though. read more

I did an interview for my 'zine with a famous metal person and after the interview I off chance mentioned something about wanting Champagne Flavor cotton candy as part of a congratulations pack and he mentioned this place as he used to and still does frequent this place when he stops in to IA state for a show stop (he is from there so he is familiar with the shop). I sent these guys a friendly email as I did inquire and they had some champagne flavor cotton candy. They were willing to ship some over at a reasonable cost. They were really kind on the phone and gave me the disclaimer that the cotton candy may deflate in shipping. Good news is that it wasn't too bad, however, completely understood where they were coming from as I can tell that they have some high standards for what they carry and ship out.
